@Op are you really sure its not a hole for finger tip to enter so that one can actually have a firm grip to open the can huh

As observed by others, sardine, tin tomatoes paste, sweet corn and many other can foods have it.
I won't agree it's a straw holder.

Its a big lie, never a straw holder (though can be used that way if you want)

It is meant for firm grip with your finger tip while opening the can (any can; coke, sardines, tommato, green beans etc)
