Those auxiliary nurses are uneducated, unexperience and quack.

That's how I saw a lady that could not pass her biology and chemistry in O Level doing auxiliary nurse in a private hospital. I was shocked because of the danger she poses to innocent patient.

She felt low seeing me because I know her root. The chemistry and biology, she didn't enrol again and latter went to do nursing.

How did the doctor screen her before accepting her into the hospital, I don't know. So the doctor should be a quack too for accepting someone without basic O level.

Ever since then. I don't allow those so called auxiliary nurses to administer drugs, injections or treatment on me.

Abi? Do so at your peril. Just imagine giving a monkey gun to shoot. No one is safe! Some of them cannot even speak English! But some patients are bold sha abi is this one ignorance now I don't know.

Hey yah I gat yahhhh, will you please tell me which regulatory bodies are in charge of training "Auxiliary Nurses". Dont encourage what is not good.

Auxiliary nurses do not have a regulatory body but there are policies which set out ie tegulated what each member of clinical team should and should not do. Auxiliary nurses abound in all healthcare services the world over. In the UK, they were called auxiliary nurses but now called Healthcare assistants or nursing assistants. Just like you have staff nurses prescribing medicines in Nigeria, you are bound to have auxiliary nurses doing what is beyond their scope of duty and that is where quackery comes in but calling auxiliary nurses quack is plain stupid.

Auxiliary nurses or healthcare assistants or nursing assistants as the case maybe in most cases are trained to check vital signs, help patients with activities of daily living, do ECG, some are trained to do venepunctureand some are trainedbto do simple dressings. They do not give medications, IVs or carry out invasive procedures.

Stop vilifying auxiliary nurses rather make sure they do not go beyond their scope and are not put in place of registered nursed.

You have limited knowledge on the topic of discussion. There is no regulatory body for auxiliary "nurses" aka quacks in our country.
The issue of competence isn't the subject of discourse but how illegal/ harmful it is for some profit minded individuals to churn out this half baked quacks to be used as a substitute for trained and board certified professionals not minding the detrimental effects on the patients.

Do not tell me I have a limited knowledge on the topic of discussion cos u know me not. By regulatory bodies I do not mean bodies that regulate auxiliary nurses. There is no such regulatory body even in the UK but there are bodies that regulate healthcare practice and the limit of competency in which every member of the clinical team is allowed to practice. Auxiliary nurses are simply there to assist nurses in caring for the patients helping mainly with hygiene needs, personal care, feeding, checking vital signs and so on. They are not allowed to administer any form of treatment to patients.

If a greedy private hospital owner decides to employ an auxiliary nurse to be doing the duty of a Registered nurse, whose fault is it?

Is not the fault of the private, but the fault of our government who throw away their citizen right and dwell on other issue....if our country were to be OK, every professional callings will be saddle with there responsibilities .... I do say prevention is better than cure even cheaper than cure but Nigeria will never accept that because they believed what a profession can do a lay man can equally do it that I is very very bad.......this is what give trend to all this menance called Axillary paralysing peoples leg with injection may God help our country

Stop the argument please, this is not us or uk. In nigeria, there is no provision for the training of auxiliary nurses!, there is no arrangement that recognises them. Infact, it is punishable to do so under the act establishing the nursing and midwifery council of nigeria. Such practice is not acceptable here. The only recognised nurses are those from the university or accredited schools of nursing. Any other is a quack!

Pls don't let us stray away from the topic of discussion here.

Some people have raised some points I will highlight here

1) REGULATION: There is no recognised body regulating these 'fake' auxiliary nurse. So just anyone can go to a clinic/hospital to get trained to become one.

2) TRAINING: Since there is no regulating body, there is no organised system to equip them with the required training they need to function well. this training is left in the hands of those who may not have the capacity to train them.

3) THE JOB SPECIFICATION OR WHAT THEY ARE TRAINED TO DO: I have read here where someone called them nursing assistants or healthcare assistants. here is the exact sentence "trained to check vital signs, help patients with activities of daily living, do ECG, some are trained to do venepunctureand some are trainedbtodo simple dressings. They do not give medications, IVs or carry out invasive procedures." AND THIS "Auxiliary nurses are simply there to assist nurses in caring for the patients helping mainly with hygiene needs, personal care, feeding, checking vital signs and so on. They are not allowed to administer any form of treatment to patients."

My question is this: can they really do all these without systemic training?

And since there is no recognised body to regulate and there is no system in place for training, point No 3 is invalid. It will only breed quackery and its ills.

MY OPINION:

We as a nation should not encourage quackery. Anyone who is not trained in a field should not be functioning in that field, including the very delicate healthcare sector.

Imagine a phone/laptop repairer calling himself/herself 'engineer'.

Re: Beware Of Quacks Called 'auxiliary Nurses' by Nobody: 7:58am On Nov 09, 2015
The auxiliary nurse problem is a symptom of a larger problem inthe medical profession, it is as a result of doctor greediness and selfishness the need to make super profits from practice, its not only auxiliary nurses but quack lab technicians and half baked doctors that are hired by some private clinics .

Some clinics further to hire expatriates with questionable competence all on the false assumption that if patients see a white man in a clinic they will patronize it because of his skin color.

People should be observant and cautious, doctors and nurses are not judges you are not under obligation to surrender your self to bad treatment from nurses and doctors. If you suspect foul play raise the alarm and reject bad treatment.

I recently had a scuffle with a dentist who in the course of removing plaque from my teeth injured me and when I protested slapped me, man i gave him hell that day dragging him out of his office he later apologized .

These goes a long way to buttress my point, you have no idea how the practice of health professionals are regulated. Private hospitals using them is illegal and should be sanctioned. In other climes, they are exposed to some level of formal education. Ever heard about the health assistants in the UK and, certified nurse assistant and license practical nurses in the US, these are staff trained to assist registered nurses to carry out their duties.
I am a nurse and I have the professional authority to tell you that the status quo in Nigeria is not the standard of practice anywhere else and I do not need a half baked "auxiliary" to assist me.

When you lack knowledge, please ask for enlightenment instead of writing beautiful nonsense. There is nothing like "auxiliary nurses" in the Nursing and Midwifery Council establishment act 1988, it's either you are a registered nurse with the Council or you are a quack. How can you delegate duties to someone that has no jurisdiction at all before you judge competency?
Medical Nurses posing as medical doctors are practicing quackery in the field, likewise your so-called "auxiliary nurses" posing as nurses in any capacity.
It is either you are Nurse or you are a quack going by the laws of our land.

Thanks OP for bringing this topic forward. These auxiliary nursing ish is indeed a menace.
Be informed that no matter how Drs want to sugar coat it, these mostly illiterates or semi- literate people are actually quacks. The auxiliary nursing training is no recognised in Nigeria and certainly not the way Drs are going about it.
They train illiterates some who can barely even speak good eng in some basic nursing skills, forgetting nursing isn't just about giving injections. These quacks perform the duties of qualified nurses in most private hospitals in Nigeria all in a bid of some Drs to maximize profit by paying them peanuts at the detriment of t's health, not minding the harm these pple can cause to lives. They do not av rationale for what they do, they just know the Dr said they shld do it this way and they follow suit.
And since in Nigeria anything goes, we are almost lawless, they get away with it. Some of these quacks go as far as establishing hospitals even conducting operations, deliveries, circumcision, treatment of ignorant Nigerians. A friend of mine bro almost lost his hand to a quack few years back.
But who do I blame the most? It's definitely the govt and NMCN. Why shld NMCN continue watching Drs do somethn they can't condone in their profession to our profession, they scream to the high heavens abt quack Drs, while they are the ones propagating quackery. Is a quack nurse any less deadly than a quack Dr? And at the end of the day these quacks even go on to practice as quack Drs

no they are not, the graduate nurses are more professionally advanced, but be informed that the nurses from SONs went through rigorous training for 3yrs+ to be qualified and write the same licensure exam with the BNSC nurses to av the right to practice. Whether BNSC or Diplomate, u av to be a RN first. Many nurses are aspiring for more professional advancement hence their quest for more knowledge and specialization

They are not just training and employing them (quacks) to maximize profit but to hide their malpractice and negligence. This is so because such Dr already has a nonentity that knows nothing to push the blame to when he/she commits medical blunders, also when the Dr wants to do anything unethical (e.g illegal abortion) the quack must play along cos she lacks the moral ground or rights to vent any professional opinion, after all she has no profession. Such employee can be fired, used as a Nurse, cleaner, receptionist, electrician, security, sex object etc by the employer (Dr) cos her presence there was founded on illegality, her papers (qualification) are fake, can't be a member of nursing association or any trade Union, can't approach the judiciary cos "he who goes to equity must go with clean hands", the quack is just a sitting duck for the employer to use as he/she deems fit.
If you see a facility that engages in training and/or employing those quacks, no one needs to tell you the minds of the doctors or owner(s) of such a facility. Demand for the licence or registration status of the white dressed being attending to you where you are assessing Healthcare be it a government or private owned facility.

Speak for countries you know about. I was apparently wrong to think that Nigeria has equivalent of the Healthcare assistants in the UK.....and no, in the UK, you do not need any formal training to work as a healthcare assistant (HCA) in the NHS. In mist cases, you only need to pass a basic literacy and numeracy test and scale an interview to work as one. The NVQ2 qualification in Health and social care is in most cases "desirable" but not "essential".

On recruitment, the HCA has to work as a supernumerary for a period of 2 weeks while he or she gains competence and confidence in carrying out tasks. After the 2 weeks, he is appraised and can then start working on his own or the supernumerary period can be extended. While working, they attend series of study days to improve on their competencies in line with their personal development plans and can take on more roles as they develop like venepuncture, ECG and depending on areas like some who work in A&Es insertion of cannulas and simple dressings.

You do not need a formal training to know how to wash a patient, feed a patient, turn a bed bound patient, check patients' blood pressure, make patient's beds, check blood sugar, take simple swabs, maintain a safe working environment and deal with patients ' relatives and so on.

And no, HCAs are neither registered nor regulated. The Registered nurse under who they work is 'responsible' for the patient.

Carrying extra weight around the waist is common for people with pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes, but it doesn't have to be that way. As a matter of fact, trimming your belly fat will not only help you look and feel better, it can also help reduce your risk of heart attack, infertility issue and stroke.

Making your abdominal muscles stronger has another advantage as well. They support the lower back and hold you upright. Continual poor posture puts these muscles to sleep, leaving you with a belly bump as well as an aching back.

A good ab workout will lighten your midsection and emphasize other large muscles of your body in a way that increases your metabolism (to burn fat) and improves your posture (to make you look younger and leaner).
