Solar Energy Installations In Nigeria - Welcome To 24 Hours Electricity by Barcholder: 1:38pm On Oct 15, 2013
Large scale Solar Energy Installations are now springing up in Lagos, Abuja and Owerri amongst other places. Systems are being used to power Hospitals, Universities, Hotels, and residential homes and housing estates.

My 5 Bedroom Detached House in Lekki, Lagos, has been powered exclusively by Solar Energy for the past month, without a single glitch. That includes all AC's.

What's more, the price of Solar Energy is considerably cheaper than generators. Look out for a rapid increase in the number of houses being powered by Solar Energy, particularly in the Lagos and Abuja regions. In addition, a new 1,000 unit housing estate will shortly be built in Abuja (Gwagwalada), that will become the first ever solar city in Africa.

All comments are appreciated.

Kingslaw: pls how much will it cost to power one-bedroom for me in ph?

Is that one bedroom, or a one bedroom apartment? To completely power a self contained apartment, you would require a 1kWp system. I have based this on the following assumptions:

Fan - 15 hours a day
Lights - 4 in number - 3 hours a day each
TV - 6 hours viewing a day
Fridge - 24 hours

This system would give you 24 hours a day of energy, on the assumption that there is ZERO PHCN supply. With PHCN, you will require less than this.

We currently retail our 1kWp system for N700k, inclusive of -

4 x 250watt Mono Solar Panels
2KVA Inverter
Complete Wiring
2 x 12V 200AH Batteries
Solar Charge Controller (protects your batteries from overcharging, therefore extends their useful life to 5 years)
Full Installation

I hope this answers your question.

No it doesn't. Once it's installed, you have stable and consistent energy supply 24 hours a day. It never goes off and is always on. As I said, I have been powering my 5 bedroom duplex for over a month, with not one second without energy for the last month. All my neighbours have ordered for theirs, which we will shortly be installing.

I run a 5kWp system in my house.

Hi,

I already have 2KVA Inverter (Modified Sine Wave) and 2 x 12V 200AH Battery.

So, can I just buy the Solar panels (2 x 250W) and the controller only, or must be inverter be pure sine wave only? Also, will the two solar panels be sufficient to charge 2 KVA inverter?

What will be the cost of the above, including wiring and installation (please show breakdown)? I am in Ajah.

Sincere apologies to all for not responding to your messages before now. I've had terrible problems with my internet account this membership is connected to, as it was hijacked by hackers. Somewhat belatedly, please be advised of the following:

1. Outright Purchase Prices (please note that these prices include the entire equipment list plus installation: Solar Panels (mono), Hybrid Inverter, Deep Cycle Batteries, Roof / Ground Racks as required, Solar Charge Controller, Wiring, Full installation)

1kWp (1.25KVA) - 700,000
2kWp (2.5KVA) - 1,200,000
3kWp (3.75KVA) - 1,800,000
4kWp (5KVA) - 2,400,000
5kWp (6.25KVA) - 3,000,000

2. Monthly Payment Option: We have now introduced a monthly payment option for qualifying customers, allowing them to have full solar power for a low monthly cost. The costings are as follows:

1kWp - 10,000 per month
2kWp - 20,000 per month
3kWp - 30,000 per month
4kWp - 40,000 per month
5kWp - 50,000 per month

In order to safeguard ourselves against payment defaults, we require our customers to provide us with a fully REFUNDABLE deposit equivalent to 20% of the purchase value of the system. This deposit is paid back at the rate of 20% per annum, until the full deposit is repaid after 5 years, and as long as your account is up to date. We typically also require a bank guarantee to cover at least 12 months worth of payments, though we can also waive this requirement if a larger deposit is put down.

This option gives people the ability to Go Solar without having the full purchase monies available up front, and begin to enjoy the benefits of 24 hours electricity from day one.

3. Other queries - we are indeed able to supply just the panels alone, as we know there are some people who have already acquired inverters and batteries, and are just looking for a way charge up their batteries without having to use a generator.

4. General awareness - The following is a very basic guide as to what type of housing unit each of our packages can typically power:

1kWp - 1 Bed Flat
2kWp - 2 Bed Flat
3kWp - 3 Bed Flat
4kWp - 3 - 4 bed Duplex
5kWp - 4 -5 Bed Duplex

Please note, these are very general guides, and assumes an average level of energy consumption. Please be aware that air conditioners are a big variable, as they are extremely heavy energy consumers. For the basic guides given above, to be safe, I'd always say that this does not include ac usage, as I know that it only takes the operation of a 1.5HP ac for a few hours to consume the combined total energy consumption of the rest of the home for 24 hours.

For example, I have 2 x 1.5HP ac's in my 5 Bed Duplex, one in the Living Room and the other in the Master Bedroom. During the daytime and when the sun is out, I'm able to run one of my ac's pretty much continuously, because the amount of energy being consumed by my home at that time is less than the amount of energy being generated at the same time by the sun. However, at night, when there is no sun, and I'm now reliant on the energy stored in the batteries, I will typically put my ac in the room on for about an hour, close the door, in order to cool the air temperature down. I'll then switch on my typhoon fan (135 watts) and go to bed. This affords me a perfect night's sleep.

There have been times when i've fallen asleep with the ac on, and woken up 4 hours later with it still on. Fortunately for me, the following day has always been bright and sunny, and the batteries that had been deeply depleted were able to recharge fully. However, had the following day been a rainy one, I'm pretty sure that I would have only just about been able to get through the following day and night with all my lights and appliances working, and definately not including any ac usage.

I hope this gives a good guide to people. Solar energy really is the ONLY way Nigeria is going to be able to solve it's energy crisis, currently estimated to be costing as many as 40 million additional jobs in the Economy (I believe that's a very conservative estimate and it's actually closer to 80 million jobs).

I'm happy to answer any further questions anybody may have. You can also reach me by email on:

Love the assumptions for energy usage...Fan for 15 hours and lights for 3 hours...If someone is working during the day time, how the hell he/she is going to run the fan for 15 hours and when they come back in the evening, the light will be on for 3 hours...what kind of person is that?

Yess this is far far cheaper than a generator. Look on the long term not short term and also consider cost per benefit.

Solar systems come without a running cost and almost maintenance free. Once you've paid for it and installed, that is the end. No NEPA bills, no generator fuel bills, no generator servicing and repair bills, etc. In addition, you will be delivered from the noise and deadly fumes from generators. You will also not have to go outside to turn-on or turn off your gen.

Now for a direct comparison of the cost, try and calculate how much you spend per month on fuel, servicing and repairs of your gen. Also bare in mind that you run your generator for only a few hours, maximum 5-6hrs per day. So whatever cost you calculate, extrapolate that to 24hrs running on gen. You will be shocked at how much it cost you to run a gen in a period of say, 2 years.

There are rechargeable fans that can also be used after switching off your air-con. This helps to save on energy consumption.

You can also set your air-con on a timer, to switch off after a particular amount of time. Some air-cons have this facility.

Anyway, thanks for all the info on Solar Energy panels & equipment. I will definitely consider it, once I have the money. cool

Yes Solar energy is the way to go now. I have been in solar energy business for some years now. We have done several installations in various parts of Lagos state especially the Lekki, Ajah axis, Ibadan, Ogun, Uyo, Calabar, Eket, PortHarcourt etc. I can comfortably say that this is the way out. I have some clients who have depended 100% on solar power (off grid). We have installed solar system ranging from 500W to our maximum of 20kW for now. I have personally installed a 3kw solar system in my house and have run it for one yr now without any issue. In the one year i have had to start Generator for a total of 3 times when we eventually ran out of power for few reasons; One was when there was a constant overcast for 4 days, second was when there was a higher demand for power in the night than normal and 3rd time was when i mistakenly left my AC in turbo mode all night which draw more current than in regular or eco mode. All the same, Imagine that i have used less than 20litters of fuel for one year meanwhile we leave a very regular life using all our facilities at home including washing machine, drying machine, microwave, fridge and freezer, water dispenser, electric iron etc.

I leave in Uyo. If you are around the area you can call in to see things for yourself. If you are in any of those cities I mentioned and you want to check out any of our installations you can call in so i can refer you to the nearest one.

you can check out our installation portfolio on our Facebook page "PBASE Solar"
