A boy won a game at a birthday party I attended with my kids yesterday and was asked his name, age and class.

He said he is 9yrs old and in JSS 2. We were surprised. In the course of trying to get him to answer some questions relating to his school his brother came out. Guesd what? He is 10 years and in JSS 3.

They both have the same trend. How did they get there? Wait ooh, they will complete their secondary education by 13 years. What of the minimum entry age into university of 16yrs? What of psychological developments?

What is your take on this? Before now I thought that my 12yrs old child in SS1 is too fast and my husband thought of steeping her down last two years until I met those kids.

Minimum age to finish sec school should be 16 no matter how brilliant you are.
If the kids ever goes into federal Universities, they will have psychological issues when mixing with older, bolder, more intimidating peer group.

Best for these set is to push them into the private University where they will still be in controlled territory and focus on their academics though these set can never compete in the real world with the ones who have passed through the necessary levels of human physiological development

he probably entered at the age of 8,finished at 13 and entered uni the same year. I also had my O'level cert at 13 but didn't go to school that same year.

so he left primary school @8yrs
entered sec school and wrote WAEC at age 13 in sec school(coz if it were to be external exams, the result won't be usable that same year)
...and got admission that same year of 13

he will suffer later....coz he's bypassing a crucial phase of life....

. Who told you the result isn't usable that same year. After I got my result in ss1 @13,I still had to complete my second school nd I was still d youngest graduant in my set. Even though I had to take a break after then and later balanced with the normal entry age,my sister didn't and she would be graduated from the university at 18,and now she's doing very fine. .now tell me what you mean by suffering, except if you think age is a function of general intelligence.

sounded like you're protesting

external exams can't be used for admission the same year . by external exams, I meant GCE/NECO Nov/Dec.

2. as per the developmental oddity, do urself a favour an google out 'developmental stages of life and implication for deference'....

thanks

. 1)I said WAEC..and not GCE/NECO .. 2)We're talking about real life experiences and you're still refering me to google??

No!I'm not saying every parent should start rushing up their kids,we have different kids with different abilities.. You can't always judge the way a child would interact with his environment based on his age..sometimes you might even take a 13 year old boy to be 16..after some time he'll get to adjust to his environment(with older peers) and in the long run there is really no bad effect.

i see nothing wrong in leaving school at a tender age. The young man is 10 years old and he is in jss 3, this means he would be writting his waec exams and graduating by age 13.the same applies to his younger brother My advise to the parents of both boys is that since most of the universites in nigeria entry dictates that the child must be 16 not later than october 31st on the year of admission to be cleared. For the three years they would be at home, they could learn a skill, do cambrigde A levels or ican examinations. As per the skills i would recommend knowledge of ict or fashion designing.

What?? ?? ?? ?? This is serious. What school admitted a 13yr old?? Universities need to follow the minimum age of 16yrs for admission.

OP there are a lot of child prodigies even in Nigeria.
William Sidis got admitted into Harvard at the age of 11 an graduated at the age of 16 (the minimum age of admission into Nigerian universities)
Terrence Tao bagged a bachelor's and master's degree at the age of 16
There are many others: Kim Ung-Yong had a PhD at the age of 15.
Ramanujan, Galois, Robert Weiner, Charles Fefferman, Enrico Fermi, Wolfgang Pauli, the list is endless.
Yours truly got admitted into secondary school at the age of 8. (Had to defer because they wouldn't accept me for being too young)
Lied about my age the next year and got accepted in another school.

I don't think its right. This is my own opinion though. Some pple might different opinion. My younger sister was 11 in jss 3. She was 14 in SS 3. She wanted to do things are mates that were 17 and 18 were doing. She wanted to do make up, she wanted to attend parties, she wanted to have boy friend because these are the things are peers in sch do. Thank God we were there for her because she was the lastt child. My dad had to stall her education for 3 years. She wasn't allowed to go to the uni untill shewas 17. Rather my dad sent her to one of our uncles in cotonou so that she can learn french while she wait till she was 17.
To me I feel very early education does more harm than good.

In this days where companies want 21year old graduate with 5years experience. Its not too early.

Gone were the days of minimum age. As long as the parents are up and doing in their tasks as parents. It will take a lot of monitoring and guidance from the parent of the child.

If they are able to enter University(especially a private) they get to have a second degree or early masters.

Double promotion things,Those small kids are often more brilliant than the older ones

[size=14pt]NO!!!

Children have to develop psychologically and mentally as well as educationally. No matter the number of double promotions a child gets, his pubertal and mental clock is still ticking jejely. He may learn the academic material because the brain is a tremendously powerful organ but functionally, he will eventually start to stutter.
Kids learn a lot from peer interaction. When his mates are discussing teen stuff, he will still be fascinated with Disneyland

Not bad at all if they are very brilliant. But if they're average, they'd struggle in future.

Suffer later? Well, it depends on the child. I got into high school aged 8, graduated high school aged 14, went to Uni at 15 cos I had to wait to write JAMB, and also got my masters as well. I didn't suffer.

The only side effect was that a lot of my mates in secondary schools who knew my age bullied me as in Junior Secondary. But I got wiser and it stopped in Senior Secondary. So it all depends on the child. Some can handle it, so cannot.

I don't really support it though, cos not all kids can handle it like I do. I won't allow any of my kids to skip grades crazily, like I did.
