According to Wikipedia, the word "breeder" means a person who selectively breeds carefully selected mates, normally of the same breed to sexually reproduce offspring with specific, consistently replicable qualities and characteristics. That said, How does one who really has a passion for breeding but doesnt have the capabilities to begin breeding find himself in the right state of ideal breeding? The truth is noone was born a breeder. The difference between the BYB(backyard breeder) and the Ideal breeder is the backyard breeder isnt willing to improve in his breeding program and the ideal breeder learns and 'carefully' breeds. The BYB mostly is about the money, but to the Ideal breeder, the Result of breeding is his topmost priority. The money is his reward for excellence. Now do you know that even with the runt of 'not so full' breed you have you can still submerge to be an ideal breeder? Lets take a look at an Example. Mr. A has a german shepherd he bought off a byb. He has a passion for breeding but doesnt know how to go about it. he then breeds his female gsd with another male and has puppies of say 8 or 10. Of course you cant have excellence in breeding by just randomly selecting mates to breed with. Neither is it about the large head or the large paws. From a single litter you can make enough money to improve your own breeding. even if its just a step higher. For Example if Mr. A sells each pup for 20k and realizes 150-180k, he can decide to buy a german shepherd from Grandiose thatll worth from 50 - 90k. hereby improving his own breeding while he still has some cash to spend. As time goes on his breeding gets better and he imports a bloodline and begins breeding proper. Breeding is passion. so you have to read alot of online write-ups, talk to alot of known breeders on your challenges and this way you get better. My padi Prodeegee thank you for this thread and i hope we learn a lot from ourselves and from other people who have something worthy to say. Its always nice when we have one litter and automatically we have been crowned a 'breeder', don't get me wrong we have all made mistakes but what makes a backyard breeder and someone who chooses to improve on this breeding stock is passion. Breeding isnt limited to dogs alone and as a breeder when the breeding season of your bitch is near you just don't go looking for the biggest dog with the largest head size, paw size but you look within too and when I say within I mean the TEMPERAMENT of both dogs if pairing them up is an insane move or a brilliant one. I was having an argument the other day on how some breeds are slowly been bred for how they look than what they should be able to do. A breeder should always want to do better than his last litter, a breeder should have a well comprehensive history of his dogs even if they are not registered or pedigree, a breeder is someone who will always stand against inbreeding, cross breeding and all sorts of indiscriminate breeding techniques, a breeder is someone who isn't just after making a quick buck off his pups but want them to go to a good home.
