President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday said opposition political parties had no choice but to unite to stop the then ruling Peoples Democratic Party to save Nigeria from destruction.

Buhari said this at a public presentation of a book entitled, “From Opposition to Governing Party: Nigeria’s APC Merger Story,” written by the Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu.

Buhari noted that the leaders of major opposition political parties realised that the PDP machine could not be effectively tackled unless they set aside their differences and came together to salvage the nation.

He said, “We realised in 2015 that unless we come together, the PDP will succeed in killing Nigeria, so we had to make sacrifices.”

The President also recalled the genesis of his relationship with the author.

He recalled that his relationship with Onu dated back to his days in protective custody during the Gen. Ibrahim Babangida dictatorship.

According to him, Onu was among the few Nigerians who stood by him during his trying days.

“My relationship with the author is cordial. When I was placed in a protective custody, he was sending people to greet me regularly. That was how the relationship developed,” Buhari said.

Earlier, Onu had explained that the three legacy opposition political parties had to give up their individual identities to form what has now become Africa’s largest political party.

He said, “What happened has never been witnessed in Nigeria or Africa when political parties merged to defeat a ruling party. Three political parties gave up their identities to form the largest political party in the history of this country.

“Before this historic event, several efforts were made to bring the opposition parties together. None of that worked. In the past, we had tried to work together. At first, it appeared possible until the whole process collapsed.

“But in 2013, the APC was born. This book is to document the events that led to the formation of the APC. It is about how we moved from being an opposition party to becoming the ruling party.”

Onu also said he wrote the book to help the APC learn from the mistakes of the PDP and avoid what led to its downfall.

While expressing his confidence in a united Nigeria, Onu urged the protesting youths in the South-East to sheathe their swords and give the Buhari administration a chance to deliver on its promises.

The minister said, “In the south-eastern part of the country, there is a growing protest. It is important that all regions are represented in an orderly manner that represents all interests. Buhari understands the plurality of Nigeria and will do everything to accommodate all.

“The Igbo need Nigeria just as Nigeria needs the Igbo. We must assure the youths of the South-East that the administration of President Buhari means well for them.”

In their separate remarks, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, paid glowing tributes to the author, describing him as an exemplary politician worthy of emulation.

Atiku said, “I think every Nigerian pays attention to public affairs. His (Onu’s) appointment is well deserved. Those of us who have worked with him have come to see in him competence, humility and sharp intellect. He is a gentleman in every good sense of the word.

“It is amazing that he found time despite what was going on to write this book. The book chronicles the process that led to the formation of the APC. As we have been told, it is a story of patriotism and sacrifice. It is also a story of change.”

Tambuwal said, “I was privileged to be the Speaker of the House of Representatives when all that is captured in this book happened.

“Then, I was maintaining a very delicate balance. My emergence as the Speaker in 2011 was as a result of the efforts of all parties.

“Back then, the formation of the APC was already in the wing. Onu is a man of many parts. The presence of two former governors from Ebonyi State who are PDP members and a serving governor is a testimony of who you are.”

The event attracted politicians from across party lines, captains of industries, friends and well-wishers.

And from what we have seen in the past six months of a united oppisition, Nigeria may be worse off under them.

No light
No fuel.
Job loses.
Collapsing security
Marauding Fulani herdsmen
Increase in pipeline vandalism
Weakening Naira
Disintergrating economy.
Non-resident leader
Free & fair elections has been slaughtered
Increase in borrowing with no capital spending.

And please do not blame 16yrs of PDP because the leaders of that same opposition were rulers in PDP same past 16yrs.

Nigeria needs God's help & not any blaady politician, ruling or opposition.

Of what importance is that book to our ailing economy? How can it stop the IPOB from protesting.

The Igbo do not need Nigeria because Nigeria ALWAYS needs Igbo blood to stay united to continue an endless experiment in mass lunacy.

The opposition PDP called it evil party but we regard it as a salvation party.

They said the party is a congregation of birds of strange fellows, we see the unity of purpose by patriotic men of clout.

They called it Islamic party, we now have both the vp & sgf as a Christian not just nominal ones but pastors.

While they were shouting a belatedly Transformation, we called for CHANGE.

They write GEJ till 2019, we imprinted and voiced Sai Buhari.

While they wail ceaselessly, we shout for joy.

They said the change is a scam, we see the change as gathering momentum for explosion.

Baba they are waiting for you to fail but we know they'll wait till eternity.

Every power that be is ordained by God. So stop the hating and support the God-given administration of President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR.

Meant well for the lgbos indeed: Buhari said they are 5%,they will not be treated equally with others;lopesided appointments, uneconomic policies against their businesses, killing unarmed IPOB protesters etc.The problem the lgbos have is their selfish leaders. l like what the lgbos youths did, they have sent warning signals to them already.

Let the books be open, and another book be open, and see they are all set of looters who have held Nigeria to ransom since independence.

Looters forming angels.

this onus book is just a fiction, who is onu when it comes to politics, what does he know in politics? Politics is not chemical engineering. Its a game of personal interest, charisma, deceit, betrayal, conviction and strong fellowership. The people with people like onu,obj and ibb is that they think all nigerians are mumu. People should take time and study obj's letter to jonathan. Read and study it carefully and you will know exactly what transpired in 2015 eletion. But ill still give you all a brief summary.
In 1999 after abdusalami came on board through the influence of ibb. Ibb wanted to pacify the south west. First i want all nigerians to know that whoever rules this country as a democratic elected president ,he has been first annointed by former nigerian military rulers. Nigeria is yet to have a truly democratic president quote me anywhere. Shagari was annointed by obj in 1979 if you doubt me read page4 of obj's letter to jonathan. In thet letter this is what obj said'on two occasions, i had the opportunity to work for my suessors to the government of nigeria. On both occasions, i never took the easy and destabilizing route of ethnic, regional or religious consideration rather i took the enduring route of national, uniting and stabilizing route. i worked for both president shagari and president yaradua to succeed me....... ... So back to my story , 1993 and 1999 same thing happened ibb worked for his own candidate but the difference between 93 and 99 was that ibb's candidate lost in 93 in the general election so he had no choice than to annul it unlike in 1999. But it will interest you all to know that obj never won the pdp primaries, it was alex ekweume but because ibb who formed the pdp and wahted to pacify the south west people after the annulment of 1993 elections forced obj on the party. We allknow obj won the presidential election the rest is history. Now back to the apc story , i want anybody reading this to google page 4 of objs letter to Gej when you read it you will understand there was a conspiracy that was why Gej and the rulling party lost. Gej after he succeeded yaradua has promised his political godfather that he will do one tenure(the mandela rule) but getting to 2013 he went against the agreement something that angered obj,ibb and some prominent northern and middle belt element in the party that was were the fall of pdp began(read page 3 of objs letter to gej ,im backing my words with facts). Gej running for a 2nd term they felt betrayed. That was why in one of the campaigns in rivers state gov amaechi said' do you know jonathan in the bible, th crowd at the rally replied yes, ameachi said what did he do, he betrayed his father, gej bertayed his father) that father amaechi was refering to was ibb.if you remember clearly Gej was making series of trips to beg ibb.back to the story of the formation of apc. When ibb, obj and some powerful elements in the party realised gej's 2nd term ambition they tried to stop he within the party(pdp) but by then Gej been the president has hijacked the party leadership. It was late then, the had only one option to fight back.first ibb had to creat another party, he sent his friend tom ikimi to form the APC. To be continued....
