Foreign Made Products Harming Nigeria’s Economy – Ooni Of Ife by Earthkumy(m): 1:45pm On Dec 08, 2015 |
The Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi
Ojaja II, has expressed his displeasure with the
actions of Nigerians who always crave foreign-
made products.
He disclosed this in an interview with Television
Continental in his palace on Tuesday.
According to the Ooni, excessive love for foreign-
made products is harming the Nigerian economy
and putting pressure on foreign exchange.
The monarch cited an example of some
industrious Igbo businessmen friends who
produce goods here and brand them ‘Made in
China’, ‘Made in Taiwan’, because Nigerians would
not buy them if they were branded ‘Made in
Nigeria’.
Ooni Ogunwusi said he had always been a lover
of made-in-Nigeria products, revealing that at
least 60 per cent of his clothing was always
Nigerian made at any point in time.
Also, he said his love for Nigeria-made products
made him transport most of the furniture in his
palace from his factory in Lagos.
He called on Nigerians to embrace made in
Nigeria products because it is the best way to
revive our ailing economy.
Before his ascension to the throne, the Ooni was
an accomplished businessman with business
interests in property development and other
areas. www.theheraldng.com/foreign-made-products-harming-nigerias-economy-ooni-ife/ |

While I respect the Ooni's role as the paramount Oba of the Yoruba people, I think he should be more circumspect about making such announcements in the future, as economics is clearly not his strong suite. There is nothing wrong with liking imports, and the whole reason for exporting anything is to be able to afford imports in the first place. Taken to its logical conclusion, restriction of imports leads either to mercantilism https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercantilism#Criticisms or autarkyhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autarky, neither of which has ever been shown to lead to a high standard of living (ask the North Koreans). Nigeria's problem is not that people like foreign goods, but that the only means they have for buying said goods is by exporting unrefined crude oil, a commodity which has never been more readily available than it is today, and with huge amounts more set to come on the international market in the next few years. 1 Like |

basilo101: Wrong. Take a look at the graph on this page - http://wits.worldbank.org/CountryProfile/en/Country/CHN/Year/2014/Summary The same page also information on how China rates in terms of tarrifs and barriers to trade. China's trade-weighted tariff average for 2014 was just 4.74%. |
