The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, outlined the government’s plan for the country in the three sectors and noted that electricity tariffs, particularly in populous areas and industrial clusters would increase when the new rates are unveiled.

The PUNCH had exclusively reported that the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission had finalised its review on the tariffs and was awaiting input from the government before it would announce the new rates.

You must provide adequate electricity before you can increase the tariff. Once there is availability of electricity in almost all corners of Nigeria, Nigerians wouldn't be bothered by the rate of tariff you throw at them.

Unfortunately you have the order of things the wrong way round. Without electricity tariffs that reflect actual costs, what incentive can there be for providers to generate more electricity? Do you think they are in business to make losses? Why should foreign investors bring their funds into Nigeria's power sector without any assurance that they're going to recoup their money? If anything, Fashola is not being bold enough, as the correct thing to do would be to completely abolish government controls on tariffs.

The "awoof" mentality is precisely what's wrong with Nigeria today. Why are people surprised when they get no more than they're willing to pay for?

I don't think so. When people pay for electricity, they deserve access to what they pay for. In Nigeria, that is not the case at the moment.

Well 2 things are require before any increase in tariff
1. Power must stable
2. All of us must must have control on how much to spend on electricity. In other word pre-paid meter must be made available to guard against rip off in the name of "estimate bill"

-Remove subsidy
-Increase tariff on electricity

Nigeria would be on the path of self development.

If it isn't available, then there's nothing to pay for. What's the problem, then? It's one thing to complain about false billing, but that's a separate issue from paying a market rate for electricity.

You won't get your first request without rates which are attractive enough for generators to provide more electricity. The funds for generating equipment, fuel to generate the electricity, and workers to run the equipment, must all come from somewhere.

As for the second, I agree with you completely. If people can see that they're only being charged for what they've used, they won't be as reluctant to pay their bills.
