Electricity Tariffs To Rise By 40% Next Month (UPDATED)NERC to Apply Wisdom by wholexy009(m): 9:46am On Oct 23, 2015
Plans have been concluded to increase electricity tariffs by as much as 40 per cent for some customers next month as a fall in the value of the naira and rising costs hinder efforts to end daily blackouts in Africa’s largest economy. “We are working on the numbers and going through the processes,” Bloomberg quoted the Chairman, Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, Dr. Sam Amadi, as saying.

According to him, some tariffs will increase by five per cent, while others will see prices raised as much as 40 per cent, depending on the electricity distribution companies and class of customer, adding that the change in rates would take place mid-November. After proposing to NERC last week an average increase of 49.4 per cent in electricity tariffs for residential customers, the power distribution companies have also sought a hike in the rates payable by commercial consumers by 21 per cent on the average. Their demands, however, are subject to approval by NERC, the regulator of the power industry.

This is corruption of the highest order which Nigeria should fight and reject to the last. This is unacceptable and would not fly. PMB should be careful and watch out for an increase that has no human faces that affected the past clueless administration during the fuel subsidy saga angry

It's very likely this will not be approved. If it does, I expect NLC to wake up and kick against it

The reality is that we have to pay more if the recent improvement in supply is to be sustained, however there is the need to ensure this is properly done to avoid exploiting the low income consumers whose consumptions are not too significant.

If the access becomes 24hrs, many would not mind paying the extra as it is cheaper than running a generator.

All CSO , NLC, TuC etc are expeted to protest this proposed hike because power is yet to increase or stable in many areas. Let Buhari tell nigerians what efforts by way of installations or spendings on power since he assumed office. Present relative power increase was the manifestation of what Gej put in place before leaving. What has buhari done that would warrant increase? It should be protested

Take a chill pill. I don't think people will really protest about this provided there is corresponding increase in supply and the rise is reasonable

Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Dr. Sam Amadi has said the commission would apply the principles of prudence and affordability in the current upward review of electricity tariffs in the country. Amadi gave the clarification against the backdrop of reports that NERC would increase the tariffs by 40 per cent. The NERC chairman, who described the report as inaccurate, added that the review process was still ongoing.

Amadi was quoted recently to have stated that between 40 per cent and five per cent increase would be approved for the distribution companies.
But he told Thisday that NERC had not finished the review “so there is no way of knowing the percentage increase.” “It is all speculative; we will not know until the end of the review,” he added. On how the 40 per cent increase credited to him, was arrived at, Amadi stated that “we said that in the tariff proposals from the discos, some have 40 per cent; some 60 per cent; some 5 per cent and so on for different customer classes.”
