OK first things first, for those of you that haven’t actually heard about the Mark Zuckerberg 99 percent charity donation. Earlier last week Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that he and his wife PriscillaChan would donate 99 percent of their Facebook shares – currently valued at a staggering $45 billion, some £30 billion – to “advancing human potential” and “promoting equality”. To make everything look so wonderful, he posted the announcement next to a picture of his newborn daughter and trust social media, praises for his altruism flooded the internet.

So sweet isn’t he? He’s a very good guy right? He’s so humble and gives back to the society right? You might want to start bragging about which of the richest men in the world would be able to donate up to just 80 percent of their shares right? But here’s the part that might just throw you off balance, what if I told you it was just an undercover to get more bucks into his pocket?

The very moment I got the news that the Zuckerberg’s were planning to give away 99 percent of their shares I was literally shocked! Not only was I shocked at the percentage, I was also shocked on how just one family could have $45 billion. Here’s what I’m driving at, couldn’t they not have given their money away without showing the entire world the letter written to their daughter and the rest of us?

Are you aware of the fact that Facebook paid only £4,327 UK corporation tax last year? I’m sure you didn’t know this. The funny thing about this whole charity donation is that everyone was so blind to Mark Zuckerberg's plan and sad thing is that many of you weren’t able to sit and ponder why? Those of you reading this would probably be calling me bad belle or envious or self righteous. It’s so sad to watch social media for a while now sing praises about Mark’s charity donation and not be opposed to the wealth gap, or even cry for a fairer world as to why a single family should be able to amass such wealth. But hell no, all of you took sides with the billionaires and only a few of us were against him.

Now read carefully, a great bulk of Mark’s assets lie in Facebook stock-around 45 billion dollars’ worth. Mark says he would bequeath much of his Facebook shares to “further the mission of advancing human potential blah…blah…blah. In order for him to dole out these shares in the name of philanthropy, Mark decided and smartly chose to create a limited liability company called Chan Zuckerberg Initiative LLC. Watch carefully ‘Chan’ is his wife’s surname and ‘Zuckerberg’ of course is Mark’s surname doesn’t that tell you something?

Creating an LLC like this is a very clear alternative to creating a charitable foundation, which would be subject to oversight and taxes. This means Mark pledged to move his money from one of his companies to another one of companies to avoid paying taxes on it. Isn’t it clear that you all were just being played? Let me continue, because it’s an LLC rather than a charitable foundation, Chan Zuckerberg Initiative LLC is free to invest in for-profit companies, make political donations and lobby for changes in law, support their very own pet causes, change the world the way they decide to and feel like a god. In other words, Mark can continue doing whatever he wants to do with his money.

Let me summarize Mark’s strategy to you, it’s what I’m tempted to call an ‘all in all shrewd business practice’ that saves him loads of money that he would have been vomiting or handing over to the government in takes, but wait isn’t that what you all were tagging as “Charity Donation”? Mark Zuckerberg has engaged in some very effective tax planning, something that the titans of new technology have proved themselves pretty adept at. In truth, this 31 year old man has little confidence in Government, in its various agencies and in the politicians who control many of the purse strings. Instead, cheques will be written by the Zuckerberg-Chan entity to good causes, effectively bypassing government.

However, the current richest man in the world Carlos Slim isn’t even too happy with Marks charity donation strategy.

“Foundations do not solve poverty,” Slim said, adding that employment was the key to eradicating it. “Employment requires that companies invest, so we need to give away companies, we need to create companies” Slim said, according to Proceso Magazine. Slim’s statement came after he was asked during an event in Mexico City on Thursday if he planned to transfer his family’s stock in his companies to his foundations.

“What’s most important to us is the flexibility to give to the organizations that will do the best work,” Zuckerberg said. “Regardless of how they are structured” Let me focus on the best case scenario, assuming Mark’s wealth would actually go to charity, where exactly would it go? This is very unclear, despite Mark’s bullet-point explanations of what he means by “advancing human potential”


Advancing human potential is about pushing the boundaries on how great a human life can be
Can you learn and experience 100 times more than we do today?
Can our generation cure disease so you live much longer and healthier lives?
Can we cultivate entrepreneurship so you can build any business and solve any challenge to grow peace and prosperity?

Ultimately, these statements by me are seen as broad concepts and are not actually streamlined. But the world won’t figure out what He actually means in practice until we see Zuckerberg’s plans in action. So my dear loyal readers, until then, Mark Zuckerberg would continue to lobby politicians, invest in for-profit companies and avoid paying capital gains taxes.

Nice exposition from the OP but the sincere truth is that Zuckerberg has long left being an enterpreneur to a businessman and that is how they think. Avoid tax!

People should wise up. No billionaire is parting with any of their hard earned funds. Tell Zuckerberg to stop this cheap deceit.
