The lecturers of the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago
Iwoye, Ogun State on Wednesday began an indefinite
strike over nonpayment of their 16 months salaries
by the state government.
The strike action, which took effect in all the
institution’s campuses, followed the resolution of the
congress of the Academic Staff Union of Universities,
OOU branch, to down tools at its meeting held on
Wednesday.
The ASUU Chairman, OOU branch, Dr. Deji Agboola,
said the lecturers resolved to embark on the strike as
the Visitor to the university; the Governing Council
and the management had kept sealed lips over their
demands.
It will be recalled that the lecturers had embarked on
a peaceful protest on Monday over the matter.
The lecturers, who carried different placards,
condemned the poor funding of the OOU, the
inherent infrastructural decay and ill-equipped
science laboratories in the university.
The protest, which lasted for close to two hours, saw
the lecturers marching through the institution’s mini-
campus at Ago-Iwoye. They also moved outside the
school gate to sensitise the community to their plight.
They marched through Ita Merin/Igan road, chanting
protest and solidarity songs.
They had threatened that if nothing was done about
their plight, they would go on an indefinite strike.
