Let me first apologise for posting this on this section. This is because I have been restricted from posting on politics section due to ban given to me by one of the moderators in that section.

The purpose of this thread is to call the attention of the Founder of Nairaland, Mr Seun Osewa over his decision to 'ban' the promotion of Biafran agitation on Nairaland.com. As most of us know, Rule 9 has been amended by the owner to reflect on the ban. Quoting the rule...


Though I am neither an Igboman nor one of the promoters of Biafra, I couldn't help but express displeasure in the rule because it violates Article 2 of United Nations Resolution on Self Determination (1960), Sections 35, 39 and 42 of the Constitution of Nigeria and also is in conflict with the principle of Social justice.

For avoidance of doubt, article 2 of the UN Resolution on Self-Determination states that...

All peoples have the right to self-determination; by virtue of that right they freely determine their political status and freely pursue their economic, social and cultural development.

It clearly states that people should FREELY determine their status and freely pursue it.
The decision of Mr Seun has contravened this paragraph and it is not something we should celebrate.

Furthermore, Nigeria Constitution guarantee some rights to every citizen and group. Some of which include;

1. Right to personal liberty (Section 35): Every person is entitled to personal liberty.

2. Right to freedom of Expression (Section 39): Right to freedom of expression and the press is very fundamental to the sustenance of democracy

3. Right to freedom from discrimination (Section 42): No citizen of Nigeria shall be discriminated against on the basis of his community, ethnic group, place of origin, sex, religion or political opinion

All the aforementioned rights have been taken away by the amended rule 9 of Nairaland.com. Additionally, the decision of Mr Seun also contravenes the principle of social justice. For avoidance of doubt, Social justice principle is of the view that everyone deserves equal economic, political and social rights and opportunities.

While I have been at the receiving end of some pro-Biafran promoters in terms of insults and abuse, it won't make me to support what I know is against their fundamental right as Nigerians and citizens of the world.

It will be more appropriate for the moderators to take down content by agitators of Biafra that promotes hate, violence and support arson. However, they deserve the right to be expressive. Those of us that believe in Nigeria will not hesitate to engage promoters of Biafra movement intellectually when opportuned.

Yes, we love promoters of Biafrans and some people don't want the Igbo nation or any other nation to secede but it is inappropriate to shut their voices. We have to uphold the tenet of democracy in promoting our unity.

Truckpusher is simply saying that irrespective of our disagreement in opinion with promoters of Biafran State, we shouldn't employ the undemocratic tool of gagging their voice and aspiration. Allow people to speak their mind but censor vulgar/hate/inciteful content.

I was beginning to get tired of NL before now....I can't be in a forum where the owner don't promote human rights to speech n others instead takes sides on issues like dis.

If he thinks it's not cool, why not open a thread let others debate on it? ? what if biafra finally comes? ? what will be the fate of this forum? ?

I was shocked when I read the updated rule yesterday!

I mean it's totally out of sorts to gag a particular ethnic group, prevent them from speaking out if they feel maligned simply because you own the medium from which their voices are heard!

But then, Mr Seun behaves like the typical CEO who does the bidding of the 'board' with extreme prejudice not giving a damn about what the consumers think...

You want to seceed but you insult people while doing it. You call southwest, South West. Yoruba, Yoruba its not really nice to know that people hate you that much. They spew so much hate that you start having phobia that once u are among Igbo people you can loose your life.

I've not seen any real reason for the agitation.

Certain things are a no-no on social media. P.orn is one of them. Of course, that should be regulated. So is racism. And every online discussion will surely have some elements of this, and thus should be regulated.

I understand your argument (and also like the way you argue, by the way), however I still don't accept that biafra talk should be outrightly banned. Of course, it can be regulated, with the spammers, trolls and haters warned or banned but not the subject itself, which is what Nairaland's owner has done.

Discussions about biafra, while it may awake passions and vitriol, is not in itself bad, nor should it be a no-no. That's just all am saying

Well I am totally for those igbos following the right channels & most importantly the right wordings to voice their beliefs even though I think it'll come to nothing.... but I respect people like that. Pro-biafrans have been on NL for a while now and no one cared about what they did because they mostly stuck to the proper way of doing things & respected the peace here. But you'll agree with me that 99% of Pro-biafrans on NL right now have absolutely no regard for proper conduct and I consider Seun's outlawing of the whole topic to be out of necessity.
So in the end I think we only hold slightly different views on how total the ban should have been.
And I was pleasantly surprised by ur gorgeous civility ...most people will go on the offensive if ur view doesn't tally with theirs.
