I passed through Onitsha on December 2 and you will review your position if you did. I counted nine burnt trucks. Thousands of northerners were trooping into Delta State; running for dear lives. Seemingly uninformed youths mounted road blocks, searching for people of northern descent. That's not social debate. You'd notice that Nairaland was used as a mobilization platform by the agitators. I was in Enugu for a week and I can tell you that despite the popularity of the Biafra agitation amongst the youths, a referendum will defeat the quest.
Why did things get to that extent. Was it not because of the killings by the military? Were they burning trucks before that day?

Irrespective of what we write here, No soldier from that part of the country would have pulled the trigger even though he may not believe in the movement.

I may not be into this biafra thing, but the National questions of Nigeria have remained unanswered.

The unity of Nigeria is not sacrosanct. We can decide to stay together, but the terms must be clear to all.

Let's not deceive ourselves as if the country is so United. Today it's the igbo people, tomorrow it will be another person. Nothing lasts forever.

It may not be issues about secession it may be something else. As Nigerians we must learn to talk to ourselves and resolve issues rather than pretending they don't exist.

the protests have hit more than 6 states capitals and the head bridge, these can affect your 'national security' more than pro-biafra posts gracing nairaland's frontpage for 40 years.
well at least the protesters are conducting themselves properly (for the most part).

But what we're seeing here on NL is just hate.

Why are you even so bitter? Are you Seun? Do think readers will take your opinion when present it like a tout?

"Amadioha should fire igbos if they cry marginalisation"

What is your business with what we say, are you federal government?
Not bitter just spitting you in your own coin especially to those that bliv they are professional in propagating hate. Am glad it's working on you though.

You see how biased you guys can be. Hate post is not peculiar to Biafra promoters. Hate messages come from both promoters and non-promoters alike. Why single out promoters?

Most time, the Biafra front page thread are statements from prominent Nigerians or there's a protest. Check the first 5 posts on these threads, and you did see who usually start the hate posts. If you can be honest, take time to check what I just wrote.

Even unrelated threads, like federal staff by state of origin, currently on front page, is now a field day for Anti-Biafra posters.

PrincessJaneDoe:
Nobody is scared of Biafra, some of us are just tired of the hate from some of the Biafra supporters. If they want to discuss Biafra, they should go to their site and leave Nairaland for Nigerians.

If boko haram were discussing here on Nairaland and they were banned, would you have said the same thing? I mean Kanu went as far as sourcing for weapons. That is how terrorism starts.

Unfortunately for the as usual misguided, self self serving, attention seeking OP and his hateful, bigoted, caustic and abusive friends, freedom of speech is not absolute, it doesn't guarantee you the right to incite, promote violence and hatred.

1. In many advanced democracies especially in nearly all of europe, they have laws on their books against hate and defamatory speech, incitement and promotion of violence which is what the lawless biafra agitators do on NL all day and everyday on NL.

2. FB is a global online platform, but they don't tolerate or allow hate speech and incitement on FB so why should NL allow you to promote such ugliness.?

3. In Canada, you get 2-14 years in prison for hate and incitement.

4. In South Africa, hate speech (along with incitement to violence and propaganda for war) is specifically excluded from protection of free speech in the Constitution.

5. Sweden prohibits hate speech, and defines it as publicly making statements that threaten or express disrespect for an ethnic group or similar group regarding their race, skin colour, national or ethnic origin, faith, or sexual orientation

6. In the United Kingdom, several statutes criminalize hate speech against several categories of persons. The statutes forbid communication which is hateful, threatening, abusive, or insulting and which targets a person on account of skin colour, race, disability, nationality (including citizenship), ethnic or national origin, religion, or sexual orientation. The penalties for hate speech include fines, imprisonment, or both.

Again, freedom of speech is not absolute and it doesn't arrogate to you the right to hate, incite and promote violence against other people.

I'm not sure if this is a reflection of the OP's well known inability and lack of capacity to differentiate between right and wrong or he's just trying to pander to his hate based congregation on NL., either way, his unfortunate write up spells ignorance, intellectual laziness and poor judgement.

I saw it and I knew that some persons are still very immature when it comes to the tenets of a true democracy but hey! I would rather sit this one out on the fence but freedom of expression, speech and right to self determination shouldn't be gagged under any circumstances.

I do expect the Biafran agitators to abandon Nairaland in protest - But these emotionally battered agitators won't see beyond the insult, bias, and deliberate attempt by the owner of Nairaland to gag a people's right to seek for redress in a democratic Nigeria in other to reflect the body language of the administration-cum military regime of Buhari.

Seun should dust up some books, read up and stop making Nairaland a mockery.

@Tonyebarcanista, part of our National obligation is to defend our country's unity and that's what seun did. Pls refer to the Nig. Pledge.

Do you have an idea of the number of underaged that gets imbued with hate on a daily basis because of biafra.

These guys who claims to have undergone peaceful protests, constantly turn the politics board into something else. Hw many intelligent discussions have you had with them?

Your argument would have been stronger if ur comparisons were made against other social media sites like facebook.

Freedom of speech is not absolute my friend, don't be deceived, even the so called advanced countries we emulate in our laws do not practice it.

Anyways! My opinion.

Yeah. You are right. The hate is from both sides. Just like the childish Igbo Vs Yoruba argument here. The most annoying thing is their belief in god. lol. Reading this thread alone you see even traces of it. I pity him. Hatred should have been his point and not Biafra. I only pity him. I hope he finds out why early.

Calm down, nothing will happen. But then Yoruba is not the problem. When a people is afraid of discussing their existence they are not ready to exist together then. Nigeria is too heterogeneous to live this unexamined life.

Let me first apologise for posting this on this section. This is because I have been restricted from posting on politics section due to ban given to me by one of the moderators in that section.

The purpose of this thread is to call the attention of the Founder of Nairaland, Mr Seun Osewa over his decision to 'ban' the promotion of Biafran agitation on Nairaland.com. As most of us know, Rule 9 has been amended by the owner to reflect on the ban. Quoting the rule...

Though I am neither an Igboman nor one of the promoters of Biafra, I couldn't help but express displeasure in the rule because it violates Article 2 of United Nations Resolution on Self Determination (1960), Sections 35, 39 and 42 of the Constitution of Nigeria and also is in conflict with the principle of Social justice.

For avoidance of doubt, article 2 of the UN Resolution on Self-Determination states that...

All peoples have the right to self-determination; by virtue of that right they freely determine their political status and freely pursue their economic, social and cultural development.

It clearly states that people should FREELY determine their status and freely pursue it.
The decision of Mr Seun has contravened this paragraph and it is not something we should celebrate.

Furthermore, Nigeria Constitution guarantee some rights to every citizen and group. Some of which include;

1. Right to personal liberty (Section 35): Every person is entitled to personal liberty.

2. Right to freedom of Expression (Section 39): Right to freedom of expression and the press is very fundamental to the sustenance of democracy

3. Right to freedom from discrimination (Section 42): No citizen of Nigeria shall be discriminated against on the basis of his community, ethnic group, place of origin, sex, religion or political opinion

All the aforementioned rights have been taken away by the amended rule 9 of Nairaland.com. Additionally, the decision of Mr Seun also contravenes the principle of social justice. For avoidance of doubt, Social justice principle is of the view that everyone deserves equal economic, political and social rights and opportunities.

While I have been at the receiving end of some pro-Biafran promoters in terms of insults and abuse, it won't make me to support what I know is against their fundamental right as Nigerians and citizens of the world.

It will be more appropriate for the moderators to take down content by agitators of Biafra that promotes hate, violence and support arson. However, they deserve the right to be expressive. Those of us that believe in Nigeria will not hesitate to engage promoters of Biafra movement intellectually when opportuned.

Yes, we love promoters of Biafrans and some people don't want the Igbo nation or any other nation to secede but it is inappropriate to shut their voices. We have to uphold the tenet of democracy in promoting our unity.

May God Bless Us All and Bless Nigeria.
First of all I do not agree with the new rule however there is no right to use Nairaland to express opinions just as there is no right to be given a platform on CNN to air your views

The owner of Nairaland has every right to take this decision though in my opinion it is unwise even from a business perspective. How long did it take for VHS videos to become obsolete? Nigerians are creative people and this sort of decision will only build resentment and lead ultimately to alternatives. The agitation for Biafra needs an outlet and in my view it should be allowed as long as it obeys the other existing rules.
By doing this it creates the impression, wrongly, that Yoruba or others are afraid of Biafra. Please let the Eboes discuss their Biafra.
I would be a mistake to think Nairaland cannot go the way of the VHS recorders
The owner needs to examine himself and take steps to curtail his autocratic tendencies particularly those that amount to own goals such as this one

There must just be something in nairaland that they can't see or get somewhere else, but they will never be humble aboutit but instead abuse and throw insults on the owner of the platform that gives them so much to express themselves. They think they are the one doing the owner a favour but its actually the other way round.

The post you quoted to hail and affirm your view is highly biased even tho' he thought he made any sense.

If we can employ what ever is left of our rational reasoning, we did notice there are two sources of hate posts when it comes to issue of Biafra, on Nairaland;

first: the pro-Biafra posters.

Second: Anti-Biafra posters.

If people like you can be fair enough in reasoning you did see that the clamp down has been on pro-biafra, while anti-Biafra are having field day.

The poster you quoted, like Seun and his rule 9, only addressed hate messages from pro-biafra. Does it mean hate messages from Anti-Biafra posters are to be encouraged?
