Fostering National Unity The Donald Trump Way. by Matthewbriggs(m): 9:29pm On Dec 11, 2015
Donald trump proposed a ban on all Muslims from entering the United States.

The world went mad. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/donald-trump/12038347/Donald-Trumps-Muslim-ban-unites-Republicans-and-Democrats-against-him.html

The question is why the backlash? Why was the world against him. Even tho his proposal was born out of a very noble desire.

A very nationalistic desire. A desire to keep Americans safe, In a world where terrorist are becoming more bolder, stronger and Americans less safe.

The reason for the backlash is very clear and well founded, because his proposal meant that because of the actions of a few set of people.
The US would alienate and trample on the fundamental rights of billions of people around the world who chose to practice a particular religion.

The goal of this illustration is to show that we can be guided by the noblest of reasons but in executing that noble reason, if we are not careful, we can go wrong.

This same drama played out on this platform on this week.

Yes as an igbo, the agitation of my kinsmen threatens the unity of this nation.

Nairaland prides herself as a platform that fosters unity wants to do whatever is her disposal to maintain this unity. She therefore decides that these agitation should not be expressed on her platform.

She proposes to shut down the voice of an entire people on her platform but Unlike trump... Nairaland goes one step further to execute on this proposal.

Nairaland albeit with a noble desire executes a proposal that makes her a villain of free speech, a villain of freedom of association, a living replica of what is happening in China and Russia in regards to freedom of expression.

If one thing history has taught us is that people with the best of intention. if not careful can commit the worst of atrocities without even knowing. Ask Hitler, all he ever wanted was a great and powerful Germany. Millions of jews paid the price for this with their lives.

In my opinion nairaland's goal of fostering unity by choking dissenting voice maybe productive in the short run. It keeps the fed off her case, and appeases the majority of Nigerians who hate these voices.

But from a big picture perspective it will achieve more harm than good to the unity of Nigeria.

Barack obama stated that it would do the American people more harm than good if via the actions of a few Muslims they chose to ostracise the entire Muslim population. I agree with him because all it does is feed into the narrative of the very few extremists, enabling them win more converts to their cause .

There are Igbos like me who believe in one Nigeria. Personally I wish Africa can become one nation. Like the United Kingdom.

In fact from the look of things my future kids grandmother maybe from the south west.

As a business man for me there is nothing as awesome as building products and services with entire Nigeria as my potential market. But at the same time I would be a fool to see the struggle of self determination by my brothers as been illegitimate and without reason.

Any attempts to shut their voices instead of listening to their voices, engaging in dialogue, and battling their ideas with a superior idea will make people like me have more sympathy to their cause.

Because at its core Nigeria's action in lieu that of Nairaland feeds a much broader narrative of marginalisation which the very few extremists preach.

Their narrative is that which states that the government of Nigeria is using her power to economically, socially and politically subdue the right and privilege of a particular group of people, because of who they are and where they are from. Always putting them at a disadvantage to suit their goals and agenda.

I for one do not agree to this narrative in its entirety because I believe I own my destiny. But what actions taken by nairaland have done so far is feed this narrative, making people like us who are on the centre and neutral become more sympathetic to their cause.

It makes it more difficult for me to really believe in One Nigeria as I used to.

She is making undecided people like me see more reasons why the One Nigeria dream may actually be a mirage.

Because I would never want to be a part of a One Nigeria that would shut down my dissenting voice and prevent my ability to express myself and give me the opportunity to be heard.

The Nigeria I dream of been a part of is a Nigeria where my voice can be heard no matter how crazy and annoying it is to Nigeria.
Where my pain would be heard, and my case brought to a round table where it is discussed and addressed by fellow Nigerians with respect, empathy and dignity.

So in essence nairaland took an action yesterday to promote the unity of Nigeria not knowing that she is indirectly promoting the dis unity of Nigeria in the long term.

If one thing history has taught us is that the only way to battle an idea is via a superior idea. Nairaland, is suppose to be a beacon of free speech, a place where ideas and people can interact. Where we can agree to disagree.

By shutting down dissenting voices instead of engaging them she is giving these voices power and legitimacy.

She is indirectly building a Nigeria, where your right to be heard can be taken away from you.

For everyone who thinks, they deserve it. It does not affect me. To my brother in the south west and north rejoicing jubilating in regards to this move. I would like say that today it's the agitation of the igbos.

Tomorrow it may be your turn, it would be something that affects you, your life, your family, your wellbeing, your own very existence.
On that day be prepared to be shut down and your voice taken from you. All because one man thinks you are not are saying what he wants to hear.

If one thing life has taught me is that what goes around will always come around. It is the easterners today tomorrow it could be Muslims, Christians, Yorubas, Hausas, Niger delta, gay, lesbians, Women, Fulanis. It could be you.

It could be you seun the founder of nairaland.

The question I would want any true Nigerian to ask his or her self. What would you want to happen to you?

The goal of this post is not to challenge nairalands decision because Nairaland in business with its goals and objectives, but it is me lending my voice and challenging an action that will at its core further destroy the Unity of Nigeria she aims to build in the first place.

To Nigerians reading this, what type of Nigeria do you want to be a part of ?

I believe that being on Nairaland is a privilege and we must obey the rules. Human rights should never be abused. Your rights stop where mine starts, literally.

For the avoidance of doubt, Nairaland is owned by an individual, not common property. If the owner, Seun, decides tha t this is what he wants, so be it. Nobody should bring sophistry where it is not necessary. Anybody who is not satisfied has an option .

Which world is against Trump? Maybe some democrats! Even the democrats are just using it for politics. I don't trust any of them. Have you seen his poll? His poll has shot up, still in the lead and by double digits. The white people I know like what he's saying but are too cowardly to agree with him publicly, but the poll tells you everything you need to know.

I am not doubting the fact that his supporters support him nor that the democrat are using it for politics. But it would be misguided to say the world supports him even when Isreal the closest allies of the republican have come out to disassociate them self from that statement. France, Uk, the middle east and sane Americans and even his fellow republicans have disassociated them self.

The polls conducted are they a reflection of what the world is saying?

Your right to free speech ends where the next persons right to peaceful existence starts.

There are several other fora where the agitators and their provocative approach could express their voices, so asserting that the regulation of their activities on just nairaland is equal to gagging or silencing them, is deceptive, exaggerated and overtly dramatic.

You are right nairaland is one of many fora's they can express their voices, the impact of nairaland's action in actually terms is not that significant. Come to look at it, nairaland's reach can not be compared with facebook, twitter, radio and word of mouth.

In essense, I am also not saying that this regulation gags and silences them in totality far from it.

My core argument is basically that this regulation gags and silences them on a platform that is suppose to be a beacon of free speech. All it does is send a very wrong precedence for the future.

Terming my argument overtly dramatic is actually you been overtly dramatic.

The flaw in your argument is twofold.

1. You have failed to acknowledge the primacy of rights of others, in the process of exercising your right to free speech. Your right to swing your elbow, ends where my right to have an unbroken nose starts.

2. Your core argument is hinged and anchored on 'what NL is supposed to be'. That decision is legally and customarily for a business owner(s) to make, and no one else. It's called a vision and a mission, which can only be guided but not determined by the desires of the customer.

I emphasize that your assertion that Seun's order is a gag order which could silence the agitation, is completely untrue and overtly dramatic, in light of the plethora of fora available to continue the agitation in their desired fashion. The current envelope the message is carried in (hatred, incitement and provocation) is clearly not in consonance with the vision Seun has for his business.

1. I have not failed in acknowledging the primacy of rights of others because in the first place I never in any were proposed denying them that right in the first place. Your premise is a conjecture.

2. I am not in any way stating that the founder can not run the site the way he choose.

Just as the United States president is legally and constitutionally elected to protect the American people. How he goes about it is or runs it is up to him. If he decides to wipe out the whole world doing so it is up to him.

So also the founder of this site has the right to run his business the way he choses.

All I have focused on pointing out is the consequences of his decision and how at its core is a short cut solution to bigger problem, how counter productive it is to what he wants to achieve.

This for me is part of the what makes my argument something you have failed woeful to understand and to refute.

I am Igbo and it will not be cool if I do not lend my voice to this cause.

Arguably, you guys fail to understand that this NAIRALAND belongs to someone, one man who built it up from the ground up. Where was Biafra chanters when he was building it, when he conceived the idea, failed numerously, persisted, determined, kept his eyes on the price and conquered? Where?

A wise man once told that a wrong approach to a good intention exist. Technically, the current biafra agitation is typical example of that.

Do I subscribe to the approach being deployed? NO!

Why are people crying? Did Ojukwu had access to social media when he championed the first phase of the Biafra race? Did he had Nairaland, did he had facebook? Yet he achieved far more success than what I am currently seeing.

Being verbose does not impress me if the basis of your argument cant be cogent for a toddler to see that when he becomes an adult, there is something for him benefit-- we can be educated illiterates the Nnamdi Kanu way.

I followed the whole rubbish being spilled on nairaland politics section and sincerely, I was not impressed by the crop of "freedom" fighters that were leading the front line. Their arrogance stinks and they boast at the slightest chance.

I saw numerous times wherein they propose their own online forum and I even visited one... I couldn't help laughing. If this forum existed, why should there be any cry over limitation of nairaland... go over to yours and seun wont bother you. it is that simple.

For crying out loud, Seun has not stopped anyone from using the INTERNET... or has he?

I will but not support the current crops who can barely co-ordinate their own bearing let alone the entire igbo race.

NAIRALAND IS A PERSONAL PROPERTY... let that sink into every skull!

Do I support Biafra? Yes I do!!

So you support biaffraa? I doubt.

It is wrong to make false claims just to correct a perception.

You can't be talking about wrong approach to a struggle you claim to support, and not offer a better approach that will be effective to actualize what you claim to support.

You clearly have not made any input in the biaffraa quest, yet you claim to support it.

You know what, you don't have to support secession. Not all of us do. But claiming you support it is falsehood.

Agitation are not done as if you don't mean it. Oh, you want them to water down the narrative and discussions about it not taken seriously? Oh they should send a paper to buhari, so that he can treat it like the confab report? or it goes on a pull and push process of the PIB ? They should agitating for something and not be heard?

You don't have to support biaffraa . No agitation anywhere works out, with laid back approach. Not even the independence of America, not even the creation of my home state, Delta.

Stick to being politically correct about it. After all buhari sees it as politics against his administration. The same way Jonathan saw bokoharam as politics against his administration.

Nigeria can remain one but the terms have to be spelt out and agreed by all.

Something tells me the next secessionist move will come from the north. God keeping us we shall see and hear how we will all react to it.

I rebutted almost every point like a good debater does.
You hurled an insult.
Guess who wasted their school fees and will be nothing more than a motor park tout.

@mikolo80 lots of fallacies and half truths in your comment that makes it look like you are trolling. I may be wrong. Ride on with your argument nothing do you.
cos you've made up your mind to face one direction does not change facts to fallacies.
burying your head in sand is not superior argument.
Replying you is not trolling.

The world are not going to be part of the election, Americans are who are supporting him will.
Matthewbriggs:

I am not doubting the fact that his supporters support him nor that the democrat are using it for politics. But it would be misguided to say the world supports him even when Isreal the closest allies of the republican have come out to disassociate them self from that statement. France, Uk, the middle east and sane Americans and even his fellow republicans have disassociated them self.

The polls conducted are they a reflection of what the world is saying?
