On a second thought, do Makalele and Busquets count as 'underappreciated geniuses'? Claude Makalele, yes underappreciated at Real Madrid but a 'genius'? Don't make me laugh. When you think Makalele, words that come to mind are 'brawn', 'destroyer', 'brute force', 'tough-tackling'. These words are not exactly synonyms for 'genius'. Busquets was a mainstay of a Barcelona side that dominated Europe for years and the Spanish team that won 3 major cups in 4 years and he is widely regarded as the best defensive midfielder in the world. So we can rule out him being underappreciated. While Busquets is an intelligent player, i don't think he is exactly a genius like Andrea Pirlo.
