My candid opinion:

Nigeria can conduct an enquiry into the event that led to the clash between the army and Shiites Muslims.

However, it is obvious that the Shiites group were indisciplined, unruly, deviant, unlawful and irresponsible. I guess they are majorly illetrates brainwashed by religious fanatics who perverted the religion for selfish motives.

The army went extreme in law enforcement and Nigerian human and material resources protection. The COAS, other generals and the convoy must have felt seriously threatened hence, the use of fire arms and extreme force to terminate the threat. I can understand the serious threat a militant group of fanatical and pervert Muslims can pose, especially when armed with weapons - cutlass, bows, arrows, sickles, swords etc.

My position is that the army did pretty well despite the sensitive and controversial nature of the circumstance. I don't blame them for engaging extreme force in dealing with the group. I will encourage them to be more diplomatic when presented similar events or circumstances in future but the army must never hesitate to engage extreme force against any group when need be, subject to the international rules of engagement.

Our armies love to maltreat and kill innocent citizens...its their forte...
The army according to the video I saw did better than tear gas and rubber bullets, they were practically begging them to disperse.
Boko haram is killing them and some fools are blocking their way and wielding machetes in their faces where in the whole planet is this acceptable?

There is more to this story than what is being told. I think its a premeditated plan to attack this sect.

I'm not a muslim, but I know what is wrong when I see one. This is wrong.
I am a Proud christian but the COAS should tender his resignation letter and everybody involved in this dastardly act brought to book. People protest and block roads all the time, it is not enough reason for this massacre/genocide. I cringe when i see Nigerians supporting the military for their action, it shows we have stayed too long in this ZOO and are beginning to act as lower ANIMALS. RIP Shiite Martyrs.

I don't think Tear gas is a standard issue for NA bro...so if ur gonna antagonize NA, I'm sure u must be expecting a more lethal force.

From what I've read so far, the army had some casualties too. The mob had gunman that opened fire from the mosque area. So let's not just assume these pple were innocently massacred until we get the facts.

I can bet you have never been confronted with situation of threat to your life whereby you are armed to defend yourself. I don't expect you to understand the Nigerian army.
Maybe, you should go and live in the north, especially volatile areas where the muslim fanatics and perverts rain supreme so you can understand their modus operandi.

I am not disputing ur claims, but please as "the wise and smart one" give us few examples of how a handful of soldiers would have cleared a path blocked by up to a thousand Islamic mob chanting and yelling "alahu ahkbar"

Many of us just come here to say rubbish with the intent of pushing blame on a specific government we despise. That is the real problem of Nigerians. Only few of us are transparent and unbiased in our reasoning.

When they attacked and killed some members of this same group about a year ago, I didn't feel it was just, but I felt the soldiers were pushed. I didn't blame the soldiers and neither did I blame GEJ for that incident. Why is it that all of a sudden, a similar and more antagonizing event occurs, and suddenly, some clowns come here to put d blame on the army and at dsame time gladly blame GMB?

If they had successfully mobbed and killed the COAS and his crew, these same goons would still come here and shout Buhari dis, Buhari that. Now the army were antagonized and they decided to fight the mob, these same group of e-goats are here talking.

Why must people carry weapons like machetes to confront d Army with all this happening in the nation??...if u think machetes are not weapons, go and read the history of atrocities it was used to carry out in Sierra Leone, Rwanda, etc. Just a few months ago, some rumors were circulating that hundreds of soldiers were killed in one single attack. If u have a family in the military or if u have lost some1 to this Islamic insurgency, I'm sure u wouldn't be saying this trash.

The rules of engagement ur talking about doesn't apply to only gun to gun situations. If u engage me with any weapon that can harm or kill me (machete, cutlass or molotov cocktail), I have a right to hit u with any weapon at my disposal (AK47, RPG grin) .... That is the rule of engagement.
The Nigerian Army in its crude form, Buratai can simply direct his convoy to take a different route in Zaria to get to his destination.

If the Nigerian Army need to deal with the Sect, conduct a covert operation and pick up the Sect leader without linking it to the Army, this will not attract bloodshed and unnecessary global attention.

Well, I'm a Muslim, and I watched the video. My point is why did the sect block the Army's convoy in the first place? Isn't that writing to letter to trouble? For close to 9 minutes, some Generals, including a Major General, was pleading to these youths but they refused. They were practically begging them but they would not leave.

Look, you don't stand in the way of the Army!? Yes, I get your point that the Shrine and all that were not in their way but why provoke the provocation in the first place if truely they are peaceful and law abiding as they later claim.

The greatest mistake they made was not giving the Army their right of way. If they had simply allowed the convoy to go in peace and continue what ever they claim to be doing on the road, we would have had all these needless bloodbath and death.

Just like someone said, your fundamental human right is not an absolute right, while exercising that right, it most not contravene the law not impugn on other people's right.

There are many ways to scare away large protest! Why not use rubber bullets or teargas and so and so but they wanted to test there power by massacre. And many here are supporting it.

Mztarstrechy:
A federal government delegation led by the Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazzau, visited Kaduna on Tuesday on a fact finding tour of the issues surrounding the military onslaught on the Shi’ite Movement of Nigeria and the damage resulting.

The delegation also comprised the police inspector general, Solomon Arase and the commandant-general of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

The group first visited Kaduna, the state capital, where they met the state governor, Nasir El-Rufai. From there they proceeded to Zaria, where they met with the emir, saw things for themselves and also visited Gyallesu, the main base of the Shi’ite sect.

Shrines and home of the sect founder, Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky were completely razed and bulldozed to the ground in Gyallesu. The town was heavily militarised with heavily armed soldiers all around the place and only a few civilians.

The onslaught against the sect by the Army started when members blocked the road, preventing a convoy of the chief of army staff, Tukur Buratai, from passing. The Army claimed that the group had attempted to assasinate the Chief of army staff,an allegation which the group denied.

There are some things I would like Nigerians to know. "There is always a reason to beat the maid".

The destruction of Shiite base was not as a result of blocking the road or attempting to Assasinate Buratai, that's bull crap.

However, the Shiite Sect originated from Iran. It was initially a grand conspiracy to fight Jews but they escalated.
Elzakzaky was chosen by Iran in the 80s to put their ideologies in Northern Nigeria. This group has been breaking laws, terrorizing even their fellow Muslims for long
This group were allegedly behind the assassination attempt on Buhari. Take note.
The army was in Zaria to destroy them nonetheless. The road blocking was just an excuse to commence operation.

My take on this is that they needed to be stopped on time. They were likely to get bigger soon and Kaduna is too strategic to be used as a terrorist base in the north.
The Army should have handled their operations covertly without them getting involved. This is where espionage and proper planning comes into play. They can even eliminate the Sect Leader without anyone linking it back to the Army.

Sticks and Catapult vs Guns, Explosives and Bulldozers. it is neither proportional nor commensurate. Google the Nigerian Army Rule of Engagement (ROE) for Internal Security Operations. It is very sad, very very!!!.
