PIERS MORGAN: The sacking of Jose Mourinho is the worst decision in football history -
shameful Chelsea should have let HIM sack his treacherous prima donna stars for playing like Christmas turkeys and conspiring to bring him down

Football is a mad game played by mad people and followed by mad fans.

We’ve seen footballers karate kick spectators, bite opponents and even get shot dead for failing to save a penalty.

Managers have punched each other, taken bungs, and made post-match speeches so unhinged that there were genuine fears for their sanity (yes, Kevin Keegan, I’m looking at you..)

More recently, almost every senior official at FIFA was busted for alleged corruption on a gigantic scale, which is not just mad but very, very bad.

But few things have ever been madder than Chelsea’s decision to sack Jose Mourinho – the single greatest football manager on Planet Earth, and arguably the greatest ever.

When the news broke at 2pm, I was lying on my sofa preparing for an appearance on tonight’s Question Time.

Within seconds, mainstream news bulletins and social media ditched all interest in the possible collapse of the European Union, the war on ISIS, and even Donald Trump.

THIS story was so big, so sensational, that like the man himself only top billing would suffice.

Everyone had a view on the downfall of the charismatic Portuguese coach with the silver hair and even more silver tongue.

All of it was extreme.

None of it was calm, measured or vaguely sensible.

Grown men either wept, howled, laughed dementedly, or did congas round their offices.

Even women with zero interest in the game itself mourned the loss of their Jose, the guy with the twinkling eyes, the sharp suits and a rakish smile to melt a thousand King’s Road ice queens.

My reaction?

Well, as an ardent Arsenal fan I should have been thrilled at the failure of a man who dubbed our own manager Arsene Wenger a ‘specialist in failure’.

But I wasn’t.

Instead, I was flabbergasted.

This is the single worst decision in the history of the sport.

Jose Mourinho isn’t just a winner. He’s THE winner of the modern game.

In just 12 years as a manager he’s won an astonishing 21 trophies.

We all know piers is an arsenal fan.......

A deluded one.

If sacking Jose was the worst decision, may be Chelsea relegation would be a trophy.

The Chelsea board even wasted time sacking him, they would have still been hopeful of a 4th place finish if Jose left a month ago.

Jose was popular because of his arrogance, like a refuse dump, everyone becomes happy when it is cleared.

For your information, Piers loved Jose because he is the opposite of Wenger. But what Piers needs to understand is that, Jose got fired the second time in a particular club.

Wenger was coach of Arsenal when Jose had his firsr stint and got sacked, Wenger was still at Arsenal when Jose was given a second chance. Having been sacked again, Jose, it should worry Piers that Wenger is still very much around.

We can not be more worried than Chelsea presently.

Piers dislikes Wenger's transfer policy. The fact is, every Arsenal fan including myself dislikes Wenger's transfer policy.

But inspite of that, one thing has been remarkable, we are making steady progress. We haven't won the title for 10years but we are making progress. And with this progress, we have the believe that we will get there. That we are back to back FA cup champs is a huge sign.

And I personally feel Wenger should finish this process and be judged by it. Can he win us titles? I believe he can. He was a winner before.

He won 3 titles between '96 and '04, that's 9years in between. He did that despite the dominance of Ferguson's Man Utd.
When you realise that Man Utd then was the biggest club in the world, you have to respect that.

I have always pointed out that if not for the financial restructuring, Wenger would still have won many more titles. He had to sacrifice he best players every year. No other manager with ambition will tolerate that, not more than Jose.

All I am is the messenger...
Since Arsene Wenger last won the League, Mourinho came to England, won the league twice, when to Italy won the treble at Inter, went to La Liga, won the League, came back to England and won the league again.
Wenger has also not beaten Jose in the league....

Specialists, Failures, and all that...
Re: Arsenal Fans Thread: The Red & White Army: 2025/2026 EPL Champions! by Spy360(m): 2:29pm On Dec 18, 2015
I do not rate managers by the number of titles they have won, I rate them based on what achievements they make with the available players.

For example, I have great respect for Ferguson because he won titles with not so fantastic squads. Ferguson doesn't spend much (as LvG), but he gets the best out of his players.

I respect Klopp, Ranieri, Pochentino, Pardew etc.

I have little respect for Pelegrini, LvG (he was great but seems to have fallen), and of course Jose.

For someone like Pep, he plays good football with excellent tactics, his problem is that he still needs big players to execute his tactics. I rate him for his tactics.

For Enrique, take away Messi, Neymar and Suarez and Barca will not be better than Espanyol.

Jose is more pragmatic in approach, which helps him a lot. His defensive 4-2-3-1 formation, requires big stars to execute. Unfortunately it has become outdated, and his inability to upgrade tactically led to his downfall.

Arsene like Ferguson vary his tactics to suit his available players. He has transformed from an initial 4-4-2 to 4-5-1 to 4-1-3-1. The good thing about him is that, his teams play good attacking football, whether they are average or big stars. Also his ability to groom (just as Fergie) is a big plus. Once with a complete team, Wenger went unbeaten a whole season- the only one to have accomplished that.

So if you ask me, based on current performance, how do EPL coaches rate?

Top 4
1. Ranieri- Leicester
2. Flores- Watford
3. Pardew- C Palace
4. Wenger- Arsenal

Bottom 3
1. Martinez - Everton
2. Van Gaal - Man Utd
3. Mourinho - Chelsea

Now, from one footie fan to another, rivalries aside, dont u ever get tired of typing nonsense??

I wont crucify u for believing in ur opinions but FIFA and UEFA that organise most of these competitions we watch almost every weekend, will pick Mourinho over Wenger without any fuss just bcoz he has won more especially in a shorter amount of time even tho he has spent more.

I was actually loking at current performance, when you look at long term of course the table will change. For example, I am pretty sure LvG will finish well (some Man U fans may not agree). Again some coaches are short term, some are long term.

@AdeLaNa1, Mourinho has been sacked more than thrice in his short career, Wenger has never been sacked in his long career. He is a certified FIFA and UEFA instructor.
