LordAdam:
This is like awarding contracts, unless you believe awarding contracts is a terrible policy too.
Guess what? I do think it's also a terrible tool which is almost always misused by politicians to reward their followers and relatives with public funds. Isn't awarding inflated contracts one of the most common forms of corruption in Nigerian politics?

LordAdam:
The government has its terms, if the prospective contractor meets the terms, he or she gets the contracts.
And who gets to set those terms? Do you think successful countries are built on politicians awarding contracts on favorable terms to their cronies and kinsmen? Because that's what you have today in Nigeria.

LordAdam:
You fail to see that a similar policy was enforced in the local auto industry and it has been working fine (pending any untoward revelations). In the auto industry, the import duty of used cars was increased to 70% and the import duty of imported new cars also got a raise. However, the importation of knocked parts was reduced to encourage car manufacturers to set-up assembly plants here.

Now we have Nissan, Hyundai and a host of others including Peugeot (that has been around) making giant strides. At the moment, tens of manufacturers including Toyota and Mercedes and registered interest in entering the Nigerian auto market.
You must be joking. Nigeria doesn't even register as a blip on the radar screen in terms of manufacturing of anything whatsoever, let alone cars. The key car manufacturers in the world are the USA, Germany, Japan and South Korea, and they didn't get to where they are by Nigerian-style tariff manipulation.

LordAdam:
Every nation enforces policies to discourage foreign imports for goods that can be produced in the country. Rice can be produced in Nigeria, but we are not self-sufficient now. There may be other policies that could be used to achieve the end-point of reduced rice import and increased domestic production, I am no economist, but do not suggest that the policy by the GEJ administration is even remotely terrible.
Every country also has corruption, robbery, rape and murder, but that doesn't mean these are good things. Most try to reduce the incidence of such things, but in Nigeria we cheer greedy politicians as they attempt to cheat us by interfering in markets, just because they say their policies are on our behalf.

LordAdam:
Your suggestion also has a loop hole. You cannot have a uniform tariff across all goods. It defies reason.
Why, because you don't understand it? Tell that to Hong Kong, which has had such a thing for most of its history. Tell it to the World Trade Organization, which has negotiated several rounds of treaties towards this same "unreasonable" goal.

LordAdam:
Politicians will always have discretionary power, there is no way to avoid that. After all, it is the business men that fund the campaigns of the politicians, so the politicians have to return the favor when they get to power.
And instead of trying to fight it, we should therefore surrender to it? Why fight robbery and rape either? After all, they will always be with us.

LordAdam:
What Nigeria needs is accountability. The question is not that politicians awarded the quota to their businessmen friends, the problem is that they did so with total disregard of the rules they themselves had set. That is the fraud and a major accountability problem. If you make rules, then follow them.
No, the question is that politicians are allowed to award quotas and subsidies to friends at all: this is precisely what is called "corruption" in civilized countries. The difference between Nigeria and better run countries is that instead of just shrugging their shoulders and saying "that's life", citizens of less corrupt countries get outraged and either go out on the streets to protest, or introduce recall initiatives to throw the crooks out of office. We need to stop making excuses for our thieving political class, even if they come from the same tribe or party as we do.

Finally, no offense, but it's clear that you don't have any idea of how free trade works, or why protectionism is such an awful idea. As a corrective, I suggest you read Frederic Bastiat's "Candlemakers Petition."

http://fee.org/freeman/the-candlemakers-petition/

No politician will ever be able to outdo the wisdom of the market in deciding how to allocate resources - let alone Nigeria's political class of thieves and senile ex-soldiers, hardly any of whom have ever run any business under conditions of fair competition in their entire lives.

The US government awards contracts. That is the world's largest government. Every economy in the EU awards contracts. And you think it is a terrible tool? Are you nuts?

Are you saying, you do not know about the local auto assemblies in Nigeria?

The WTO has never issued any directive towards a uniform tariff for all goods. All goods are not priced the same, they do not have the same supply and demand dynamics and are not influenced by the same factors.

Study the romance between the Department of Defense in the US and Lockheed Martin. Do you know it is legal in Nigeria, the US, and elsewhere for businesses to lobby members of the parliament to do their bidding? How do you suppose the masses overturn that?

Free trade may work in certain scenarios, but it is not a perfect solution. Don't put the cart before the horse. Work on accountability, then we can talk about ending nepotism. For as long as businesses and wealthy businessmen keep sponsoring politicians, the politicians will keep pushing things the way of the businesses. Asking for any different is asking for utopia.

First things first. Address accountability. Let the nation be on its feet. Then we can target nepotism. The West did not become this high and mighty in one day. They followed a natural growth process. We too must not delude ourselves to think that we can jump the gun.

Nigeria is presently afflicted with a very powerful cankerworm of corruption. GEJ was obviously intimidated greatly by the corrupt cabals in various sectors that he resorted to ignoring the activities of the cabals and actually denying their existence.

Buhari has promised and shown a determination to take these cabals head on. Even when he was a military man, the cabals found a way to knock him off. Corruption is like a monster, if you fight it, it fights back and unfortunately, it is very powerful. The matter is beyond GEJ or Buhari and there's only much in which any determined leader can achieve in this dirty fight against corruption.

For the fight to be won, Nigerians have to gather enmass and stand behind any leader who shows any determination to tackle this monster. Only when the people fully support the fight against this monster can the monster be defeated. God help us!

It's amazing how some of our elders just want to destroy our country, to line their pockets. undecided After all this stealing, you'll not take it with you when you die. These SoBs should be tried for treason with a death penalty for them and their underlings. Every single one of them, they're all rotten to the core. Alas, the status quo will probably remain & we Nigerians will just keep suffering & smiling.

Follow up a bit?

Is he the one to follow up? The EFCC and ICPC, are they not independent bodies? What about the regulatory agencies? Is he also the person heading all of them? Why did their respective heads not ensure that the policies were enforced and fraud were eliminated. Was it GEJ that informed them to let corruption thrive?

I remember the Odua scandal and how the woman was protected by GEJ, so I'm not saying GEJ was perfect. But PMB is no different. Why is everybody silent about the role of Sanusi and Emefiele in Dasukigate? Or that Femi Adesina as Editor received money (although it has now been returned)? Why are they not still lambasted if they are not protected by PMB.

As I said, the status quo remains. After Buharigate, the mills of Dasukigate has gone worringly silent. When you point a finger at someone, four figures are pointing back at you.

Is it not media blackmail?

Did you not notice how the electronically controlled zombies jumped on the thread to scream anti-GEJ sentiments, without reading the article, like he was the one that managed the companies or oversaw the selection process?

It was an okay writeup but the intent was wrong especially when you look at the title. Why did the writer not say "Rice Mafia orchestrate massive fraud in Nigeria N117b rice import quota scheme"? Rather than use "massive fraud" to suggest that the whole scheme was ridden with fraud whereas only the marketers and their cronies defrauded Nigerians.

GEJ did his job of formulating good policies. The Minister of Agriculture did his best to ensure the policies were enforced. And saboteurs in the ministry that are still employed in the ministry under PMB's government today sabotaged the policy. These same people will likely sabotage PMB's policies too, like is evident with the fuel subsidy scandal.

As long as people like you and those I quoted earlier on continue to reason like jelly fishes, nothing meaningful will happen in Nigeria.

I totally agree actors like the attorney general of the federation, Katsina state governor, etc.
The write up has shown how our common wealth is being channelled to a thieving few while sabotaging legitimate long term plans that would guarantee the nations rice production development.
They bragged with pseudo achievements in this sector and every other sector of our economy. Politicising every sound policy it comes up with. Throwing figures of their spending without proper procedures, how in Heavens sake will it work.

GEJ ineptitude government practically brought this nation to its knees...and we are still struggling to get up.

May God help PMB.
And some wailers would begin to wail that they have not seen the change promised them yet. Look at the way they are sharing billions and hundred of millions as if it is their fathers money. After destroying the economy for long 16yrs. Bleeding the economy dry. Diverting funds, diverting everything to sabotage the economy. How can u expect change within 7months when JEG and his world class looters have turned everything upside down, the economy already in shambles, abnormality taking the order of the day with looting spree. Morality has no place again. Even as corrupt as Obasanjo he was able to pay off nigeria debt with world bank and also something in foreign reserve. But JEG has made us sink further with huge debt profile, inspite of excess crude oil sales. JEG is not fit to become a class captain let alone president where goodluck worked for him to get there but could not sustain him at that height. Indeed GEJ's ineptitude is first class. God must intervene and give the current leaders direction.
