FG Calls Mtn’s Bluff (n1.4trn Fine), Says Dec 31 Deadline Subsists by MachoRankin(op): 5:58am On Dec 22, 2015
LAGOS — The Federal Government, yesterday, said it would neither be cowed nor threatened by MTN’s court action against the N1.4trn fine which was later reduced to N780 billion, insisting that the telecommunications company risks another fine if it fails to pay on deadline.

Minister of Communications, Mr Adebayo Shittu, made the statement yesterday in reaction to the suit instituted by the telecom operator at a Lagos High Court, weekend.

The minister, who spoke through his Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Victor Oluwadamilare, however, admitted that MTN had the right to seek court’s interpretation if it feels unsatisfied with the action of the regulator but made it clear that nothing would stop the government from imposing additional fine on the operator, at the expiration of the deadline.

This can only happen in Nigeria. I didn't hear of the word negotiations when some international banks in the US and UK were fined heavily for non compliance with anti-money laundry act. I saw this coming, and i wish more fines would be imposed on the cheating network.

mmmmmhhh, so this is a way a country raises budget money. As soon as the government start to get involved, you start smelling a rotten fish. If this is how nigeria will continue to operate, stagnant economic growth awaiting it. Who is well in his rightful mind to throw money in the country where there is no guarantees. Nigeria already has become a risky investment destination. Potential investors are looking east of africa.

Yes, if they were guilty, they need to be fined, but you dont fine a company almost 3 times of the profit they make a year. unless you want to kill the company.

which one will take their place?
You dont run a modern economy like you running a jungle economy, there will be repacussions of all of this, both sides, the country and mtn will come out of this badly brused. There wont be a winner.

Even if MTN leaves nigeria, they wont die, they have operations in other 21 countries, just for those who are wishing them to go into extinksion, if mtn was making $100, without nigeria, they would be making $67, still a pretty good profit.

Very good. You break the law and then sue for being punished. When nigeria should be the one suing them for compromising our national security. They better pay up.

70% of Crime committed by scammer or fraudster use MTN line, I think their downfall is near. I dont use them anyway since 2002. Mainly because they are not customer friendly at all. I scored the Minus 500
