According to the latest information reaching my desk as at 6:35am. Thousands of web designers have converged at the CBN head quarters in Abuja to protest the recent policy restricting foreign payments on naira cards.

One of my correspondents was able to speak to an highly pained webmaster to get further clarification on the movement. This is what he revealed - "As of now, we are unable to pay for hosting, we can't buy domains anymore. All because they have decided to restrict foreign payments. How do you expect us to serve our clients. Foreign payment is what our business thrives on, without paying an hosting company, our clients can't have their business in the digital space. This is totally not acceptable and we won't stand by and watch a couple of unserious characters take us out of business".

Well, after a thorough analysis and scrutiny of the information received thus far, it seems the CBN policy wasn't well thought out.

According to the leader of the movement, it's only a matter of time before Nigerian sites get shut out of the digital space because all websites that are currently online and active will be taken off the digital radar when the hosting timeline elapses and the merchant is unable to receive payments for renewals.

The policy has been viewed to be a stir in the wrong direction as it's running timeline remains unknown.

More story after the cut.

The gist is that a crowd of Web Designers are protesting in front of CBN, it is a lie. The entire story, the picture and the write-up is on big pile of lies.

The way I see it. If the policy isn't reversed asap at least for the benefit of web developers who need to pay for hosting and other Web related stuffs. CBN might end up not having a website anymore after a while.

I am a web developer but I was still able to pay for hosting just last week or is it that the policy is yet to commence? I am confused by this new initiative from CBN.

What card did you use. Naira mastercard? I also was able to make payments last week until yesterday.

Both my naira mastercard and Visa card got declined.

This new policy is crazzzzy.

Visa payments cannot be processed because of this hare brained scheme.
Those pictures are not web developers but the truth is small scale businesses are suffering due to this policy.
Some people only source of income is through web services, visa and travel agents, online buying and selling.
How can obligations to these foreign markets be done without payment online in the 21st century

The CoalCity site was put offline because it grew so big and needed Dedicated Server to remain online. I ran it for years from my pocket. At some point it was most visited site from anyone or group from Enugu. The politicians did not see a way get money through it, so the appreciated it but never supported with funds. So I had to let it go.

Currently, still have a loaded portfolio of site. Have a nice day.

@Bold:

It been great. Now we can see a concerted efforts towards doing the right thing. The budget is improved too. MDAs sitting up to. I see a 2016 that will be better than 2015. By 2019 we can review what has been done and compare. As for the fuel issue, it is a temporal issue and will soon go away. Generally, it's great and tomorrow will be better.

I have no problem processing payment. I have many options than I can use (mostly epayments) and it's working fine.
