National Identity Management Commission was set up many yrs ago by Obasanjo. Unique id. for Nigerians and Nat. DB are their main mandates. What have they done to date? Though, I will not blame them, politicians etc will not allow it work. Some want to be able to forge election and population numbers! That's just the problem. Beside, National Identity is a simple thing. The Technology is available. We do not need to reinvent the wheel. The manpower is there. Computer graduates, members of Nigeria Computer Societies, programmers etc can be assembled, and in a short time, it will be up.

Nigeria Biometric systems is still manual. The BVN is manual too. Or else, you do not need to submit BVN from one bank to the other. All you needed to do was to visit your other banks and place ur finger on their device, and your BVN will be called from a central database (CBN) if previously registered. You finger print should be the unique key/pry key, not even BVN.

Bank Account Numbers are still manual. Else, one will be able to place his finger print and his data will pop up.


If they are ready to let it work, it will work.

Has anyone disputed the fact that this exercise the govt is about to carry out has to do with the harmonisation of data? No! Nobody has a problem with that, least of all me!

The only area of concern to me, was their need to now issue unique identification numbers after the exercise. That was what aroused my interest, and I made my contributions in that regard. Is that an offence?

A few people responded to those comments, and I clarified issues which they did not feel comfortable with. That is what this kind of thread is meant for. You are the one that still keeps finding fault with my responses, despite all I have stated here.

Guy, you are the one who has failed to comprehend what the govt spokesman said. Go back and read the original article posted by the OP (especially the last few paragraphs) with an open mind. You will see references to the new unique identification number there. I am tired of having to repeat myself.

People can decide to submit their identity to Governments scrutiny but myself will not participate in this thing.

It might be for the greater good but what happens if a tyrannical govt. takes over governance and decide to use it to silence every form of agitation thereby gagging the entire society ? Our Government should do what is obtainable internationally and not this biometrics I cannot trust any Government to have 100% information about my activities and my whereabouts. This will lead to tyranny and repression.

Well, for now, Nigeria being the way it is, I quite understand why its imperative that Biometrics be taken from this generation. What I will ask Nigerians to do is raise alarm if this program is allowed to become "permanent". Meaning, the next generation should not be subjected to this because the records of their parents (and their offsprings) have already been taken and registered in a vital statistics database.

In some countries like Belgium you get an ID number once you click 16 (not quite sure). It is not uncommon to have a national ID card+passport.
