abdulwastecx:Seriously I need clarifications. You said the tie-beams were at 45° and now you made the king post has a vertical slope of 30° using hypotenuse theorem. Now, how? In hypotenuse theorem, ur h=opp=king post but wat made up ur L part of the eqn? rafter? how does the 45° of tiebeam comes to play? if the tiebeam is 45° how come u can get 35° again? Pls assist me…… I am studying civil engineering with little experience in field work and more of design study..... pls I really need ur careful explanations. Thanks |

| Re: Simple Guild To The Construction Of Timber Roof Truss In Nigeria by abdulwastecx(op): 8:49pm On Dec 25, 2015 |
Porthos:You have to know the difference between plans and elevation when it come to roof design. Let me explain it using a three dimensional coordinate system of : x, Y and z X and Y been the plan and z been the height The rafter run across the plan in x Y direction while the rafter is from plan x-y and z direction. The tie beam ( bottom) cord for timber design are mostly spaced at 4ft or 1.2m center to center. At the conner of the house to the tie beam makes a 45 degree to the adjacent edges on the plan. The king post is determined after all the rafter have been nailed or screwed into position. The height of King post depend on the slope of the roof |

abdulwastecx:thanks a lot. It's beginning to make sense..... but is this statement of urs correct " The rafter run across the plan in x Y direction while the rafter is from plan x-y and z direction. " ……… |
| Re: Simple Guild To The Construction Of Timber Roof Truss In Nigeria by abdulwastecx(op): 4:03pm On May 15, 2016 |
Porthos:Typo error, I mean the tie beam run from X to Y direction (plan) while the rafter run from x - Y to Z |

45 degree should hav been for rafters nt ridge and V. gutter, though the work itself didnt show that, well, i will like to work with u. |
| Re: Simple Guild To The Construction Of Timber Roof Truss In Nigeria by abdulwastecx(op): 8:31am On May 18, 2016 |
nwaanambra1:Those mathematics and all those things we learned in school are very important, you just have to open your mind to them, learn them well and try as much as possible to apply them. The roof Construction cost less because there was no trial by error. The construction was extremely fast because I have a concise drawing made with all dimensions.... In fact, every thing came out well because I always put in more time in the office to produce error free sketches for any job we want to do. Experience is also a very important factor, I was a carpenter before (family business) we all learn how to do wood work from very early age |

Mrjo:You are wrong sir, 45degree is for the ridge or Valley. The angle of the rafter is govern by the high of the roof. Hope this sketch below help

abdulwastecx:to achieve 45 in rafters the hight of king post will be the measurement of the width divid by 2 bt to get that in corner hip 3 quater of the width. |

abdulwastecx:but this is rather too high, more like a masquerade... I mean do you plan to rent the space in-between the roof to a tenant? do we also consider maintenance, how can someone climb this is there is leakage?

your are doing well my Engr. from the same family house in RCCF Rivers. still hoping to understudy you in time to come bro |
| Re: Simple Guild To The Construction Of Timber Roof Truss In Nigeria by abdulwastecx(op): 9:36am On May 18, 2016 |
Chukazu:The hight of the house is moderate. The hight Is a function of how wide and the angle you use. For this building the slope is around 30%, which is very good for easily flow of water and ease of repair |

@OP, you are doing a nice job on this thread. May I add that while planning for roof structure, consideration should be given to the kind of nogging vis a viz the kind of ceiling that would be installed in the house. I'm saying this because as a POP/PVC ceiling installer, I've come across many situations whereby a client calls you up for POP installation only for you to get to site and see a 4x4, in some cases 4x2 nogging instead of 2x2 nogging which is the right nogging for POP ceiling. Some times one would just wonder if the the client did not tell the engineer or the carpenter or whoever is in charge of the project that he wants to install a POP on the nogging, or the the professionals in charge of the project do not know that you don't install POP on a 4x4 nogging; but on a 2x2 nogging. If it is a PVC ceiling that is to be installed, one can excuse a 4x2 nogging. In summary, 2x2 nogging is the ideal nogging structure for POP ceiling (4x2 nogging could be managed in some cases if some conditions are met), PVC ceiling works on both 2x2 and 4x2 noggings while 4x4 nogging is a no no for both POP and PVC ceilings. 4x4 nogging works for the traditional slate ceiling. I hope this helps. For more info and enquiries on ceiling installation, check my signature. |
