From this comment I can deduce you've probably lived all your life in Lagos...

Many people in Lagos already use solar panels on their roofs..

Go out of Lagos and see availability of land... Even Lagos can displace people just to build a solar plant.
The volume of electricity they're talking about here is on industrial scale. 13000MW is not same as what people get from having solar panels on their rooftops.

IGNORANCE IS A DISEASE, THIS IS WHAT WE HEAR WHEN NON ENGINEERS ARE APPOINTED INTO A TECHNICALLY SENSITIVE POSITION.
WITH ALL OUR ABUNDANT FREE GAS AND OIL NIGERIA CAN ONLY BOOST OF ABOUT 4500 - 4800 MW OF ELECTRICITY. HOW DOES THE GOVERNMENT INTEND TO ACHIEVE 13000 MW IN LESS THAN FOUR YEARS TIME?
EVEN IF ACHIEVABLE, HAVE THEY TAKEN TIME TO REVIEW THE BUDGET REQUIREMENT?
IT IS ECONOMICALLY CHEAPER TO BUILD A THERMAL STATION OR HYDRO-ELECTRIC PROJECT OF SIMILAR POWER RANGE (MW) THAN A SOLAR POWERED SYSTEM.
SOLAR POWER AND WIND POWERED GENERATION SHOULD BE USED FOR SMALLER SCALE PROJECTS IN THE NORTHERN PART OF NIGERIA PARTICULARLY IN THE AREAS OF AGRICULTURE, IRRIGATION, COMMUNICATION ETC.
The coal in Enugu can power the entire South East.

I hate it when people recommend nuclear power plant in Africa where there is abundance of farm land, wind , coal, sun, water(hydrogen) e.t.c..

So u expect Africans to use nuclear at the expense of their farmland, ocean e.t.c. That's already been polluted by people..

You'll have no problem if Africa starts importing drinking water, food e.t.c
If you had read my comment well enough..you will see where is used the word """could have""" besides you get things all wrong.... Nigeria will not be the first African country to have a nuclear power plant.... The main issue is our crazy brothers from the north who never liked development....

Lol.... Every country makes use of generator at some point and those developed countries still don't have power failure... We cannot have dependable power supply unless we restructure our electricity line system... From generation to the distribution
Every country does use generator, but when you depend on generator rather than the primary means of supply, don't you think there is a problem?

U're right..

But people get what they can afford. It depends on batteries... The type they use in homes would be different from the ones meant for industrial scale.

If the employees managing the plant make a mistake that's the end of the area where the plant is located...

Just like the explosion that happened in Anambra some days ago due to ignoring safety standards.

Good...let the project be spear headed in the north where there is much source of energy from the sun..The only reason why nigeria can't boast of constant power supply and generation is because of foolishness and madness...

Fashola it's time to talk less and do more..get the north to be peaceful so that development can go there...

do you know anything about solar power at all? Among all the means of electricity generation, it is the most expensive. And the larger the megawatts the more hecters of land you will need to site the solar panels. Our government just like to deceive us. Ordinary mambilla hydro that can generate 3050megawatt at cost of about 5billion dollars, they've not done it since the time of obasanjo, they're now talking about solar that is 20times more expensive.

FOOLISH TALK! From 1960 to date (55years), Nigeria struggled to generate 4500MW. How long will it take to generate 13000MW? Do the maths yourselves! Nothing has changed

Not real. Most solar projects are sited in rural areas because of the availability of land. I don't see any available lands in urban areas to arrange solar panels. Although, that's just the generating part of the project, distribution is a different ballgame.

Until we ban the importation of Generators, power banks, Ups, etc then our light issues will be history, as long as these guys spend billions of naira importing these items, we are always going to keep on respiting from seeking solutions and also remain complacent about the problem at hand!
Let's use our respiratory organs as an analogy here
Imaging if you could only breathe from your nose and not your mouth, then you will take serious measures whenever issues arises concerning your nose, but since we can also respire through the mouth, whatever happens to the nose we usually tend relax from finding optimal solutions!!
Did Togo ban generating set before improvement in power? Until we generate and distribute power to and from each region,we will continue in this mess. Imagine Lagos generating power for half of Nigeria yet they experience poor power

I tire for APshit o. 13,000 megawatts. Where will they put the panels? That means they will clear like 10 state in Nigeria, they will pack the people there to other states and demolish the buildings there and now put solar panels in those 10 states. Because there's no where in this world that they built Even 1000megawatts of solar electricity on a single spot. You don't need to blame them anyway, Almost all of Buharis ministers are lawyers, heading ministries of power, work, etc. Even kachukwu is a lawyer. The two so called super ministers, Amechi and fashola has two abandoned white elephant railway projects that never saw the light of the day. They will dream project that will never become a reality.

Abeg no vex na. Wait till 2019 na. Its just that, they would have killed PDP by that time and it will only remain APC. Everybody would have defected to APC so that they be free from EFCC witchhunting. If any man be in APC, he is a new creature, old Loot, has passed away and they're forgotten.

First step: Change the archaic private power generation, transmission, and distribution laws.

BTW, that's thousands of acres of land, and billions of dollars!
