Lets be realistic you and I knows that 50million years to come no indigenous languages can get to the standard of being an international language... there are many factors which makes a language popular and international. For example colonialism, we all know how that made English and French very popular, secondly those languages are more easier to learn compared to local languages, so am not hyping English and French am talking about someone being diverse and fluent in both international languages, I believe it will help us (Nigerians). and by the way there is nothing wrong in speaking upto five languages cus have met many people who do, Frankly am saying all these out of jealousy
I like your points and I agree with you...but it's necessary to support the local languages. Thanks

And I also think you are exaggerating the knowledge of English in the francophone African countries.. As far as I know,Most people in Mali and Gabon don't speak a word of English. And even in the francophone part of Cameroon, knowledge of English is only widespread among educated youngsters.

Miss, I'm not a philologist or an anthropologist. cheesy

But I will try from reading books in those subjects. Please consult experts or recommended books if you need this information for official or scholarly purposes.

I will list them with the earliest to emerge first, and the youngest last. In order of age.

(1) Anatolian: has been around since about 4200 BC. Language died/became extinct sometime between 2nd & 8th century AD (late antiquity).
(2)Tocharian: came about around 3700 BC. Now basically extinct.
(3) Germanic: by 3300 BC
(4) Italic: including Latin & subsequent Romance languages by about 3000 BC.
(5)Celtic: including Irish/Scottish Gaelic, Breton (still spoken in France by a few people), Welsh, by 3000BC
(6)Armenian by 2800BC
(7) Balto-Slavic by 2800BC
(8]Hellenic/Greek by 2500BC
(9)Indo-Iranian by 2200BC
(10) Albanian by 14th century AD

Quite surprising because one would expect Indo-Iranian and Hellenic languages to be older than say Germanic or Italic. Even Celtic would be presumed older than Germanic. But alas, Germanic is the oldest living Indo-European language sub-group. wink

Welch eine ueberraschung!

No, I did not do it as a degree. I'm rather more at home dealing with diseases. grin cheesy

Though I studied various European languages, mostly Romance ones. But none at degree level.

I'm just interested in languages as a hobby. cheesy

Information about Germanic languages is not hard to get. If that is what you mean.
There's much known about Swedish, Norwegian, Dutch/Flemish, German, English and Danish.
