English and French are of the same language family and their parent is latin

Wrong.

English is a Germanic language. From old German in fact. Like Swedish, Danish, Dutch, Norwegian.

Finnish on the other hand is a Finno-Ugric language like Hungarian, Estonian, Mordvins, Keralian, etc.

Ancestors of current English people came from Saxony (today called Sachsen regions of Germany..like Hannoner, Dresden, Leipzig, etc.) And Jutland, which is a Danish peninsula in the North Sea.

They invaded Britain after the Romans left just before middle of 5th century AD.

French is of Romance language family like Italian, Portuguese, Spanish/Catalan, Romanian & Romansh (a Swiss language).

So I received my own passe souvenir at the wedding after it felt like a deja vu to me, too many weddings maybe...checked the time, Ooops! I have a flight to catch and told my personal chauffeur I would have a rendezvous with him tomorrow at the popular restaurant vis a vis the bukateria and told him to choose any food he wants from the a la carte that the bill is on me, I told him adieu. He told me bon voyage. En route the airport, I remembered suddenly, Oh God, how can I go sans my passport , what a terrible faux pas I made, well C'est la vie grin

Not surprising.
English is actually at least 30% French.
Most French words entered English through the Norman (old French) invasion of England. If the French mainlanders hadn't invaded England, You and I in Nigeria would have probably sounded more like those cranky Germans and guttural Dutch people today.
Are you a Linguist?

Nigeria is a messed up country... if you travel out you will meet many young people who could speak French and English fluently, even in the so called Francophone counties many people do speak and understand English, Frankly am really Jealous. The Government should make French a compulsory language to learn in our Education system because French is one of the international language spoken world wide, it offers great opportunity for integration, good job prospect and mutuality for speakers.

Have you asked yourself how far our indigenous languages have gone in our educational system?

Miss, I'm not a philologist or an anthropologist. cheesy

But I will try from reading books in those subjects. Please consult experts or recommended books if you need this information for official or scholarly purposes.

I will list them with the earliest to emerge first, and the youngest last. In order of age.

(1) Anatolian: has been around since about 4200 BC. Language died/became extinct sometime between 2nd & 8th century AD (late antiquity).
(2)Tocharian: came about around 3700 BC. Now basically extinct.
(3) Germanic: by 3300 BC
(4) Italic: including Latin & subsequent Romance languages by about 3000 BC.
(5)Celtic: including Irish/Scottish Gaelic, Breton (still spoken in France by a few people), Welsh, by 3000BC
(6)Armenian by 2800BC
(7) Balto-Slavic by 2800BC
(8]Hellenic/Greek by 2500BC
(9)Indo-Iranian by 2200BC
(10) Albanian by 14th century AD

Quite surprising because one would expect Indo-Iranian and Hellenic languages to be older than say Germanic or Italic. Even Celtic would be presumed older than Germanic. But alas, Germanic is the oldest living Indo-European language sub-group. wink

Welch eine ueberraschung!

Am talking of international languages of which you know, so don't ask me about indigenous languages (mind you, I love my Language with passion), even Francophone nations have indigenous languages, but how come they speak and understand two important languages in the world, that's my concern.

If you keep hyping French and English as international languages..when would one of your indigenous languages become an international language? That other countries can communicate in two prestigious languages does not mean we be like them..we have more local languages and they are even going into extinction... think about it

Lets be realistic you and I knows that 50million years to come no indigenous languages can get to the standard of being an international language... there are many factors which makes a language popular and international. For example colonialism, we all know how that made English and French very popular, secondly those languages are more easier to learn compared to local languages, so am not hyping English and French am talking about someone being diverse and fluent in both international languages, I believe it will help us (Nigerians). and by the way there is nothing wrong in speaking upto five languages cus have met many people who do, Frankly am saying all these out of jealousy
