Diva residents have taken up a major task to flush out Nigerians from their region by roping in auto drivers to not give ride to them. With increase in population of Nigerians in Diva in the last one year, nuisance too has grown. So, now the locals have decided to boycott them through all means, which would force them to leave the region permanently.

Population of Nigerians living in and around Shiv Shakti Nagar and the other parts has touched 2,000, as flat owners, expecting higher rent from them, often allow them to live illegally in the region.

"Earlier, we had no problem to accommodate them in housing colonies as their number was less. But now due to increase in their population, we are facing problems. They come home late at night, speak loudly and their brawls are dangerous. In most cases, they end up assaulting locals, which creates further problems," said Umakant Patil, a resident and a social worker.

"Some also indulge in illegal activities by overstaying in the region. They are rude to neighbours and hold parties inside the flat, consume drugs. So, we decided to speak to auto drivers to not allow them inside their vehicles. This will discourage them from staying in the region," added Patil.

"We will not ply Nigerians in our autos, as they often get into fights with us over fares. We cannot fight them back due to their robust and strong muscles," said an auto driver from Diva.

Meanwhile, afraid of a backlash, Nigerians don't raise their voice. "Due to a few Nigerians, the whole community has to suffer. But we have faith in the law of this land and are sure that government authorities will look into the matter," said Abiola Okafor, a Nigerian.

"We have been facing racist remarks since we have started residing in this area. And now boycotting us from all means is injustice to the community," said David Nanamani, another Nigerian.

Cop speaks
DCP Sachin Patil said, "We are looking into the matter and adequate action will be taken depending on the situation if we get the complaints from locals or Nigerians living legally in the region."
