The Nigerian Army on Friday reacted to the alleged maltreatment of about 3000 soldiers recently re-engaged.

Some of the soldiers had told Daily Trust that they were on hunger strike to protest the army’s refusal to post them five months after re-engagement.

The soldiers are part of about 2,500 soldiers and 102 officers dismissed from service over alleged offenses committed during counter insurgency operations.

Commenting on the matter, army spokesman Colonel Sani Usman said the claim was unfortunate.

“It should be noted that the Nigerian Army has been tolerant and patient with their acts of indiscipline and unprofessional conducts,” he said.

“This was based on the understanding of their circumstances and conditions. Efforts have been made to retrain them, integrate and give them sense of belonging.

“But the attitude of some of them has left so much to be desired and would not be tolerated any more.

“The Nigerian Army thrives on discipline, loyalty and good conduct and if anyone of them could not measure up to expectation or live by those tenets, he should leave”, he warned.
stop discriminating against these valiant men. They left their post because the weapons they weilded were far inferior than that of BH

when dis same soldiers were sacked under GEJ era for various offenses, d likes of APC, ezekwesisi, falana n oda zombies as usual politically took advantage of d situation to haul insults at GEJ. APC in their modus operandi started shouting dat d soldiers actions was as a result of lack of weapons. not long ago general buari said GEJ made dis soldiers commit mutiny. buari den went ahead to accuse GEJ of betraying their trust by denying dem d necessary arms to fight boko. gen buari made d world believed dat d soldiers actions was justifiable because GEJ refused to give dem weapons to fight terrorism.
before u say jack robinson, ezekwesisi began make calls for pardon n their reinstatement into service. falana even offered his services n charged d army to court.
after winning elections APC promised to pardon dem n redeploy dem back to service. but 8 months after assuming power, d soldiers ar still technically not in service. wat happen to d numerous promises by APC to reinstate dis soldiershuh why ar dis soldiers suddenly embarking on hunger strikehuh is dis how APC military govt under general buari intent to reform d armyhuh dis is wat happens when security is played with politics.

So that is enough reason for soldiers sworn to obey their commanding officer to commit mutiny?

So all these is the justification for reinstating soldiers charged with mutiny?

Now they are defying the Army authorities.

You guys are playing with fire in the name of politics.

@Obayaya, you and your ilk who doesn't know what the army is, should pls shut up! Do you think what is happening in Maiduguri is video game? It is a matter of life and death. A conventional military doesn't send its men to go and die but to fight and survive. But what of when you are being sent out to die so that your little pittance can be converted. What is happening is beyond the comprehension of the ordinary man in the street.

First Of all
Those Guys deserve heart felt apologies and serious compensation.
What you don't understand, 90% of them have already got an engagement outside the military, no more adapted to it again. Immediate the are reinstated, they will just retire from the services with benefits and pension. I wonder how the Army will handle such case. They were dismissed, they got no gut to complain if not for Buhari

Sir, I do not think what is happening in maiduguri is video game. I also believe that there's a reason mutiny isn't tolerated in the Armed Forces. I'm of the opinion that the Army should stick to their code of military justice. Instead of letting politics put them in a difficult situation such as this.

The facts remains that these 3000 men can never be fully accepted like comrades by their colleagues. So what's the point of trying to reintegrate them and end up distracting and messing up the mood of your entire fighting force.

This is a distraction the military doesn't need right now.

A true soldier don't go on hunger strike or protest. A real soldier endures all even if it would cost him or her his life. Those guys are cowards and should be treated as such. Their reintegration was simply a political move which will have a devastating impact on the rest of the soldiers. Those guys could corrupt the minds of other soldiers.

Don't get me wrong man. There is no justification for insubordination or indiscipline in the military. My point is that Nigeria is a Savage country where the high & mighty get away with their evil deeds but lesser mortals face the full weight of the law.

I get your point..

When I said "playing with fire in the name of politics" , I was talking about reinstating these men.

Their colleagues will never accept them completely. In another news article, these 3000 men complained of being labeled cowards by their erstwhile colleagues.

What exactly is the point of reinstating them? To cause disaffection among the fighting forces? Passing subtle message that mutiny can be tolerated?

And considering that the ratio of officers to men in the Nigerian Army is in the region of 1:20, you'll understand how dangerous such message is if heeded.

so does this statement solve the problem? I had thought that their agitations will be resolved. This is high mark of insensitivity in my own opinion. I was expecting to hear that they have been properly reengaged with formal letters. Let us be human, I mean all of us.

We should also consider the thousands of other soldiers who fought with the same weapons yet didn't abandon their post.

Those who have Instagram should follow the Nigerian army account. You'll be proud of what our boys are doing

Soldiers don't necessarily respect their superiors because they want to or because the Superior in question deserves it, they respect them because it's the law. And if they don't, they will pay dearly for it.

Taking away this law is an invitation to insubordination and chaos

Exactly!

Insubordination and chaos can destroy the entire Army. Thus is not tolerated. That is why things like mutiny attract the death penalty. Mutiny in the Civil Service or in Politics might be tolerated or even supported (if the circumstances leading to the mutiny is justified) but Mutiny or Cowardice within the Military is a taboo no matter the circumstances leading to the mutiny.

It wont be out of order if the soldiers are summarily dismissed. Disnt they know what they were getting themselves into before joining the army?
Majority of those in the army have no business there.
The army is a discipline and fearless corp anywhere in the world. Its only in nigeria that unemployment is the reason for joining the army.
I once read an article of a female US service lady who was caught up in an ambush that cost the life of seven of her platoon members in iraq. Despite been raped and tortured by her captors, she refused to read a speech given to her on camera. That is bravity, not the cowardice some NA display. The military is not a place for the lily livererd.
