Thank you.
So I guess the 2by2 is a better option but the question still remains I alreeady have nuggings done so do I need the extra wood for the POP work?
Also how is POP costed? is it per sqm?

Thank you.
You are already on my list for WC fittings.
You could have had the plumbing job but you disappeared on me so had to go with someone else.
Expect some patronage in the next 3-5 weeks time.

Probably the noggin spacing is 2ft by 4ft as against the standard spacing of 2ft by 2ft.

True to that sir.

Running a noggin is important for POP ceiling. 2x4 spacing is ok but 2x2 spacing gives a stronger ceiling as the latter is going to stand the test of time than the former. The fact that you will be saving N10,000 max on a project if a noggin spacing is 2x4 makes me kick against it. And please don't introduce recess/ceiling speaker to POP ceiling with 2x4 spacing so that what happened in 1897 will not repeat itself.

Safety before Budget.

Actually saw your post where you said you could tie the POP directly to the tie beam, that its cheaper.. That was why it was included in my comment.

On top and not below as its currently being done? Right?

Yes sir... Most of the job we have done in Abuja similar procedure was used. As a fact, most pop work in Abuja are done this way

Nice..Will like to see that.. But what if a person has to go on the roof for repairs or maintenance? Its on these tie beams we walk on.. If nogging is done on it, then it's nearly impossible to walk in the roof. What do you think?

I always have safety in mind hence the reason I come on here and ask for advice.
Your comments are duly noted so I will make sure that 2*2 spacing is used if I go ahead with the POP.

Appreciate your comments

When you think of ease of modification/repair, I'll assume the house is permanently designed to use only POP even if the owner wishes to use a different material (Laminated wood, steel, tiles etc) in the future.

Normally, ceilings were created to hide the building infrastructure i.e. piping, wiring by having a plenum airspace above the dropped ceiling to allow access for repairs, new additions and inspections. So what happens to that? POP framework is super when you don't walk on it.

Come to think of it, we don't build attic vent into Naija homes which means our builds rely on the airspace between the ceiling and the roof/slab for airflow/circulation. So if we cut it off or reduce it, what happens to installed cables (like Cable TV Plenum cables, CAT5e/CAT6 cables, RG6 and others which in most cases are plenum rated). I'm sure you agree with me those cables don't like heat.

I think I'm better off with a dropped ceiling noggin than having it on the tie beam. The extra 1ft depth has its advantage. I can have cut braces to anchor it to the roof beam.

I like that yellowish sand, it's what I want for my courtyard as a base.

Can I get this near Ibadan?

Sand for Concreting and Casting isn't by the colour but by its Sharpness. I'm not against dis yellow colour sand, it maybe Hydrous Aluminium Silicate sand(kaolinite) and if it is, it's not used for casting but for Paper companies, for Paints making as well as fertiliser. Some Paints manufacturing companies in Ogun State collect it from Suppliers, there is a reasonable deposit at a location in Ogun State.

If the purpose is to use it with granite then it must be sharp, if it is sharp no worries but if otherwise... i advise you get a sharp sand irrespective of the colour and should be salt - free.

But one cannot judge the sand from just pictures but by seeing it.
Sorry for late reply it was used for blinding

Lanre is a thief. Imagine he supplied so called 30 ton granite and 30 ton stone dust and they both finished in a week on just blinding. Don't forget I had some granite on ground for long time there too. I gave him 175K (120k and 50k) to supply 30 tons granite yesterday and 30 tons stone dust and he ended up supplying 15 tons each.

In fact, I gave him contract of over 1.1 million naira in less than two weeks. 4 man diesel of sharp sand, 60 tons granite, 60 tons stone dust, 450 cement, 5 man diesel plaster sand, and 4 sandy laterite. Yet, he is still not satisfied. Just two days ago I asked my brother to give him pocket money.
Hmmm I. Scratching my head here.did yoy see the 30 to ne truck? Cos from mine it was a trailer truck and I had max load.

KolaShangOne says I can get it in Ibadan so we'll see.

It's exactly what I want, not the regular filling sand.

Good day all,
Please I noticed that some manual gates; in addition (or as substitute for) padlocks have normal door keys installed to the pedestrian side such that a key can be used to open it from outside/inside.
I feel this is better than having to create a hole for unlocking inner padlocks from outside and also useful when you don't have a gateman or when locked from inside and you are coming home late; rather than disturb the family just use your key.
My concern however is durability given that the keyset will be exposed to the weather. The concern is that it may fail at a critical time.
Please is there anyone in the house who is using keysets on their manual pedestrian gate and what advise can you give on same.
Are there specialised door locks suitable for external all weather use?
Thanks a lot.

Your concern is right.

All you need do are:

1.) Buy a Good key for starters, there are durable ones in the market
2.) Periodically "inject" Grease (Normal car Grease) into the lockset area. I use Engine Oil but Grease is better due to higher viscosity and it can withstand the elements more.

if you do these two, you are good to go.

I use one myself

Personally I think you are shortening the life of your locks by using regular grease.

You should use graphite lube.

There are some good padlock you can buy that will last long without using any lubricant often, but there very expensive (just take a look at some big lock up shop at lagos island, most especially those woman that sold lace materials cloth, take a look at those keys they use)

@ Excuzeme : Thanks a lot sir, really appreciate the insight.
@ EgunMogaji : Thanks a lot sir. And thanks for the education!. You got me reading up on graphite lube which is quite good. Thanks.
@ rotecch77 : Thanks sir. Was actually referring to door locks, not padlocks. Already have padlock on the pedestrian side but I have to keep knocking for someone to open from inside the padlock/throwbolt anytime I am out, local options is to cut a small slot for the one outside to be able to unlock the padlock. That cutting is what I want to avoid by using a door lock type.
Thanks.
