Nigeria's CHAN Group C rivals exposed

NIGER:

The Mena are featuring in this competition for the second time after they made their debut in the 2011 edition in Sudan.

Incidentally, they stopped Nigeria to qualify for the 2011 CHAN.

They reached the last-eight that year before they lost on penalties to hosts Sudan.

For Rwanda 2016, they eliminated Togo 3-1 on aggregate. They won 2-0 at home, before they held their hosts to a 1-1 draw in Lome.

Niger have named a squad of experienced players like Kofi Dankwa and Issiakou Koudize. Both defender Dankwa from Sahel FC and AS GNN midfielder Koudize featured for Mena when they played at the 2013 AFCON in South Africa.

An international since 2008, Kofi is better known in Niger as ‘Kowa’ and has played in South Africa, Tunisia and India. The daring player, who could play as a central defender or defensive midfielder, scored in both legs of the qualifiers against Togo.

First-choice goalkeeper Alhassane Alzouma is the oldest player on the squad as he is 33 years old, while AS Douanes striker Adebayor Zakari is the youngest at 19.

In September, they lost 2-0 in the Eagles main team in a friendly with goals from Ahmed Musa from the penalty spot and a late effort by Belgium-based Moses Simon

They held hosts Ethiopia to a 1-1 draw in a warm-up game.

Monday, January 18

NIGERIA vs Niger 5pm at Stade Regional Nyamirambo, Kigali

TUNISIA:

The North Africans won the 2011 CHAN on their debut and in fine style as they were clearly the best team on parade in Sudan.

Zouheir Dhaouadi was the MVP of the competition with full internationals like Oussama Darragi and Youssef Mskani part of the team.

Full international striker Ahmed Akaichi, who featured for Tunisia at last year’s AFCON in Equatorial Guinea, will be one of the stars of the Carthage Eagles to watch out for.

Local coach Hatem Missaoui has been in temporary charge of the team in the absence of experienced French coach Henryk Kasperczak, who is recovering from surgery.

They finished a disappointing second with four points from four matches in a mini-league qualifying series that involved winners Morocco and 2014 champions Libya, winning only a game and losing two.

GUINEA

The Syli National are making their debut at CHAN.

They defeated Liberia 4-2 on aggregate in the preliminary round of the qualifiers, before they edged past Senegal on the away goals rule in the first round.

Guinea won the first leg 2-0 at home, before they lost the reverse leg in Senegal 3-1.

The players and officials were paid $13,000 each for booking their ticket to Rwanda 2016

Players from the country’s leading clubs AS Kaloum and Horoya form the bulk of the squad to Rwanda.

Like Nigeria, they trained in South Africa for this tournament. They played a 1-1 draw with Cote d’Ivoire in a warm-up game in Johannesburg.

Why the anti-Oliseh sentiments? I don't expect us to win this trophy, cuz our home-based players are somewhat terrible compared to those of DRC and North Africans them....

No need to attack Oliseh still, just hope for the best

It was home-based players that won the U-23 AFCON last month. It's a common misconception that Nigerian home based players are poor. Actually it is the league that is poor, not them. And the proof is that foreign clubs keep buying Nigerian players. We actually have one of the best local standards of play on the entire continent. We just cannot seem to put together a decent league to retain the best players and ensure they are not owed consistently. That is our problem.

Nigeria beatable boasts Niger coach:

Niger coach Francois Zahoui has been talking tough ahead of today’s 2016 CHAN Group C match against more illustrious opponents Nigeria, saying the Eagles are “beatable”.

The next-door neigbours clash at 5pm Nigerian time in Kigali.

“We’re not afraid of Nigeria. They are beatable,” said Zahoui, who has also handled his native Cote d’Ivoire and has now built a very physical Niger side.

However, Mena will be missing top star Kofi Dan Kowa today due to suspension after he was booked in both legs of the qualifiers against Togo.

The Ghanaian-born defender or defensive midfielder scored in both legs of the qualifiers and is Niger’s most experienced player having made his international debut in 2008 and has played in Tunisia, India and South Africa.

Nigeria will be missing central defender and assistant captain Austin Obaroakpo also on account of two bookings in the qualifiers.

Ahahahahahhahahaha....... It's my first "National team" match of the year 2016....... Okay, Sir Klexycole.... What do you got this time? Hehehe.....

Is somebody ready to roll and rumble??

Today I wanna see the best of the following:

-Ikechukwu Ezenwa's Top reflexes and good command of his area.

-Chima Akas' leadership from the back.

-Paul Onobi's "Scholes-like" midfield play

-Ifeanyi Matthew's Energetic creative play from midfield.

-Ezekiel Bassey's "hazard-like" mazy and Daring runs and skills.

-Ibenegbu's "mosquito" qualities... He must disturb those Nigeriens.

-Chikatara's "bounces like a butterfly but stings like a bee" Attacking approach.

AND

-Tunde Adeniji's finishing.

THIS IS WISHING THE HOME-BASED SUPER EAGLES ALL THE BEST.... Let's fly Eagles!!! Let's fly..... Hehehe....

Nigeria target winning start against Niger :

Nigeria will hope to get off to a winning start in the 2016 CHAN against next-door neigbours Niger on Monday.

Kick-off time is 5pm Nigerian time.

Nigeria coach Sunday Oliseh said it was crucial to start the 2016 CHAN on a winning note.

“We have a very good team to do well, but we pray for a good start in the tournament,” said Oliseh, who faces his first major championship since he was appointed the country’s coach in July 2015.

Christopher Madaki and goalkeeper Femi Thomas said they are seeking victory in the opening game in Rwanda.

"It's victory we are going for against Niger Republic. Opening games are important in competitions and we are looking forward to start the CHAN on a winning note," said Giwa FC defender Madaki.

Enyimba goalkeeper Femi Thomas said he believes a two-week training camp in Pretoria, South Africa, has been worth it and this will be evident against the Mena of Niger.

"Our camping in South Africa helped us, it brought us together as a team. We are like a family in camp with high spirit. Victory is our target," Thomas said.

Nigeria will be buoyed leading up to Monday’s game after they defeated the same team 2-0 in a friendly in Port Harcourt in September.

Skipper Ahmed Musa gave the Eagles an 11th minute lead from the penalty spot, before Moses Simon doubled the advantage five minutes from time.

It was a very physical game with Niger most uncompromising in the tackles. It could be a repeat on Monday in Kigali.

Ghanaian-born Kofi Dan Kowa will be one of the most experienced players for Niger on Monday having being an international since 2008. He featured at both the 2012 and 2013 AFCONs for his adopted country.

He has posted foreign stints in Tunisia, South Africa and most recently India.

The daring central defender could also play as a defensive midfielder and scored in both legs of the qualifiers against Togo.

Both West African countries are featuring for the second time in this competition.

Niger made their debut at the 2011 tournament in Sudan and reached the quarterfinals, where they lost on penalties to the hosts.

As it were, Niger stopped Nigeria from the 2011 competition after they overcame coach Daniel Amokachi’s team in Kano.

Nigeria first played at the CHAN two years ago in South Africa, where they finished third.

Niger eliminated Togo to qualify for Rwanda 2016, while Nigeria saw off Burkina Faso.
