@Poster, your friend is just being NAIVE and perhaps lacks a good qualification. I was once a victim of such Tsunami but I got a good job almost immediately because I had a qualification (ICAN ATS- then) and I was able to give a good explanation. Today I have moved on and even had higher qualification for any other eventuality. I wish all the best though.

89% appraisal score does not imply that he is a strong candidate. He Cud be the weakest link where others had scores above 90%.

Also, it is possible that he was appraised 89% for clerical work (such as customer service). He is not useful than a Trader with 60% appraisal.

The question is, is your role pivotal to the employers operation? No (i presume)

To my mind, the hardest part for someone in bank operations is acclimatization with the real world. After working without leave like a robot from 7am to 9pm for years,in a high efficiency environment,the real world seems so slow and inefficient. You keep wondering why everyone around you is ineffective. You also realize, due to excessive sweating when outdoors, that the air conditioned environment has conditioned your body. It also takes days to get used to sunlight.Your feeding habit totally distorted. With time, the truth dawns on you...you were just a name and I.D. number to the bank. Your feeling of indispensability due to your efforts and dedication was just an illusion. The branch moved on smoothly without you. All those bank pallies you thought you had dont even call to ask how you are doing. The customers who previously called you from morning till night stop calling when they realize you are out. You are alone...pained..wondering if everything was worth it. The point of this epistle is for those of us still working for corporations to constantly have it at the back of our minds that the job is just a means to an end and not an end in itself,unless of course your family owns the enterprise,which in itself does not exist in perpetuity. You are ultimately responsible for your life. Do not expect anyone to plan it for you. Prepare for the jungle and chose what part of the food chain you want to play. Don't be deceived, sooner or later,you will enter that jungle. As they say,life is a joke. You are either laughing or being laughed at. Your choice.

lucky you!!! My friend is a very smart person. God was good to you to have gotten another job immediately you left. He started his MBA while he was in the bank and will soon complete the program. So you see he is not naïve. The job has just refused to come cos I'm sure he has submitted his CV with most banks around.

But if I may ask, is this a new banking practise? Whether yes or no, is the regulatory body i.e CBN aware of this wicked practise?

What I mean by qualification is that you must have a profession that can fetch you a job almost immediately. Without prejudice to him, if you have Masters in Zoology, Arabic Studies, Animal Science or History, tell me how easy it is for you to get a job? PLS I AM NOT MOCKING HIM; JUST TRYING TO MAKE A POINT. Moreover, looking for job in another Bank can be very frustrating unless you are good and with a good track record. He should look for job elsewhere and should not be proud. I believe God would help him. I first got a job as an Account Officer before moving to another Bank.

They can't sack u just like that! U could press charges. Before someone is sacked, there would documented evidence of unruly behaviours, such as queries. Except in the case of theft or fighting, which would be stated in your termination letter. Since he's got no queries he can't be sacked just like that. Its just blackmail. Besides people who gets fired, still get another job.

Another April 2nd approaches.. From an in-house source,it is a ritual in Diamond Bank. They call it TSUNAMI. I heard it is an annual exercise. That is a sad day that many are advised to resign. My friend has a very bad experience about it. This is someone that is a very smart and hard worker, very intelligent individual, whose last annual appraisal was about 88.8%,has not committed any fraud, had no query in his human resources file, gave his life to the job only to be locked out of the system and his boss called to tell him to resign WITHOUT any reason(@ least known to any). The irony of this exercise is that it can affect anyone. This wicked act also has a ripple effect on future job search for the sacked staff. My friend has been faced with the dilemma of explaining why he was asked to resign. He answers that it is a mystery. This unconvincing answer make him loose jobs. And the truth is that he doesn't know why he was sacked. That's double tragedy and has left him devasted.. What can he be telling them as the reason for his sack? Pls note that no fraud was committed, appraisal was very ok.

Best option is for him to start a business IF HE HAS SOME SAVINGS. The problem with being a banker is everything is available as a loan and your salary is practically mortgaged. Car loan, House Hold Appliance Loan, Laptop Loan (Yes! I am not joking), Housing Loan, Holiday Loan, Kids School Fees Loan, etc. etc.
I never liked the life of a being a banker in Nigeria. I left the moment I had the opportunity. We worked even up till Saturday back then (Saturday Banking) and our life was all about:

Shortage
Overage
Till and Balancing/Zeroing your Cash Account

We had no time to develop ourselves or diversify our skills. Where is the time to go for that course or that professional certificate exam? The banks will only send you on courses they think will benefit their business. Training then was mainly scheduled in the early and late parts of every year. I feel I was lucky to be in Aba at the Ariaria market branch of the bank I worked for. I saw INDUSTRIOUS YOUNG MEN who were into everything in the ARIARIA INTERNATIONAL MARKET. I sharpened my business skills from some of these ordinary looking young Ibo guys who had millions in their accounts. Some even took loans from our branch. We marketed them and chased them about as prospects for facilities to meet our targets. These were ordinary looking young men, but getting their cash or partnering with their business through loans would either make or break our jobs. ''WHY NOT BE LIKE THESE GUYS'' I thought. Their level of commitment opened my eyes to the business world.

When you are let go in most of these banks you are hardly paid anything for severance. Unless you are leaving at some managerial level I think. The bank should be temporary for youths. If you get in, have a valid plan to get out as soon as possible. If you are taking a loan make sure it is for a business venture (which is difficult because the banks do not provide this type of loan for their staff) you will have to partner with an outsider to source for this.

SHORTLY PUT, BE THERE, DO YOUR JOB WELL, GATHER THE SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE AND HAVE AN EXIT PLAN

Exactly! He must have told his interviewers that. The reason the bank made it to be 'asked to resign' is for the ex staff to still be able to get employment elsewhere without hitches as against ' sack' or 'dismissal'

On point...I opened an account for a thin scrawny nineteen year old Igbo boy around January. He was an apprentice in a store that sells electrical equipment like bulbs, sockets,screwdrivers etc.

By December, the boy had saved close to 900 thousand naira just from doing side solo runs that his master was not aware of and did not feel the impact.

I beg to differ. Banks employ on merit, that's why you find smart guys who don't know anyone there. Government jobs are secured based on who you know almost ten out of ten times.

Banks remain the hope for smart people who don't know any oga at the top, and job security is only an illusion. In Ogun state, Amosun employed some teachers first week of december, and he sacked all of them by third week in december 2015. Its real!
