How Home Eagles Rated Vs Niger

The Super Eagles started their 2016 African Nations Championship on a winning note Monday evening. The home-based Eagles side scored four second-half goals after a dour first half to defeat the Mena of Niger 4-1.

Comple tesportsnigeria.com's IZUCHUKWU OKOSI rates the Eagles stars after the game…

Ikechukwu Ezenwa
The Sunshine Stars goalkeeper had a splendid performance in the game. He dealt with the aerial balls brilliantly but could do nothing to stop the fierce shot that led to Niger's only goal scored by Zakari Adebayor. 7/10.

Matthew Etim
Etim played at right-back and had a decent game. He gave away some freekicks though but had a better second half than the first when his composure on the ball and clearance were more encouraging. 6/10.

Chima Akas
The Super Eagles captain was commanding from the rear and was quick to clear the ball away from danger when the Nigeriens opted to attack from his position.

His reading of dangerous situations was excellent although a couple of times he was caught ball watching. 7/10.

Jamiu Alimi
The 3SC defender had a nightmarish performance. He struggled to keep pace with the dangerous Idrissa Halidou Garba and gave away unnecessary free-kicks. He was substituted by Orji Kalu within the first 17 minutes of the match after he was yellow-carded. Poor game by the defender. 2/10.

Stephen Eze
The Sunshine Stars defender is one of the five players from the Akure club in the squad and who also started the game.

Eze started in the absence of the suspended Austin Obaroakpo. He was impressive, especially with the second balls and in dealing with aerial threats from Niger. 7/10.

Ifeanyi Matthew
El Kanemi's Matthew had good pre-Championship performances in the tune-up games against Angola and Cote d' Ivoire but the match against the Mena was clearly not one of his better performances for the Eagles.

Most times he gave away the balls although his game improved slightly in the second half. 6/10.

Ikechukwu Ibenegbu
Warri Wolves midfielder Ikechukwu Ibenegbu was missing for most part of the game and was seemingly only available to take the free-kicks for the Eagles.

Ibenegbu had a very poor game despite clearly being a very experienced player. 4/10.

Paul Onobi
This was not a splendid performance by the Sunshine Stars midfielder. He managed to set his team-mates up with some nice passes. However there were those that went astray and he needs to weigh them better. 6/10.

Osas Okoro
The speedy Rangers forward was a constant threat to Niger's defence in this game and his crosses were tantalising.

He scored one of the goals and weighed in with an assist. 8/10.

Prince Aggreh
The Sunshine Stars left-sided forward was a constant menace to Niger's defence. His quick feet and dribbles caused all sorts of trouble for the Mena of Niger defenders however his final balls in the first half were mostly disappointing.

He however provided an assist in the second half. 7/10.

Tunde Adeniji
The massively built striker provided the assist which Osas Okoro scored from to open the floodgates of goals for Nigeria.

Adeniji's physicality was an asset to the Eagles but he was guilty of reacting slowest to a fine pass from Osas Okoro in the 30th minute. Adeniji was later substituted by Chisom Chikatara. 6/10.

SUBS
Chisom Chikatara
The Abia Warriors striker announced his name to the world with a splendid second half performance against Niger.

Chikatara scored three world class goals after coming off the bench and could have scored more but for his desire to go for glory.

The forward was deservedly handed the Orange Man-of-the-Match award for his wonderful performance.

The 'Kolanut Boy' has proven his talent. He needs to play this good more regularly though. 9/10.

Orji Kalu
The defender replaced the ineffectual Jamiu Alimi and asserted himself well in the central defence. Kalu's interceptions and clearances were commendable. 6/10.

Usman Mohammed
The Taraba United midfielder was introduced by Sunday Oliseh to shore up the midfield and he helped bring stability to the midfield that gave away the ball mostly in the first 45 minutes. His ball-winning ability was key in the home Eagles not handing the Nigeriens the initiative who sought to score more goals after Zakari Adebayor's thunderbolt. 5/10.

Niger Coach: Superior Nigeria Good For CHAN Final

https://d1bez7r3o7wd77.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/he13.jpg
By David Meshioye and Adeboye Amosu:
Mena of Niger Republic coach Francois Zahoui has declared his admiration for Super Eagles style of play and quality after his team were mauled 4-1 in here Kigali on Monday.

Speaking after his team's 4-1 loss to Nigeria, the former Elephant of Cote d’Ivoire coach said the Nigerian team demonstrated their huge experience against The Mena of Niger in the West Africa derby, describing the clash as David and Goliath encounter.

Zahoui tipped Nigeria to go all the way to the final of the of on-going Orange Africa Championship if their performance on Monday is anything to go by.

“Nigeria was much more the better side," Zahoui said.
“We came against a better Nigeria side that are good enough to win the competition.”

The Niger manager however expressed worries over his team’s chance of progressing to the knockout stage given the pedigree and quality of teams in the group.

He assured their teeming fans never to give up on his team despite Monday's loss and promised to keep working on his team as they face Guinea on Friday.

“We will keep working hard even though it would be hard to qualify considering the pedigree of teams in the group,” he said.

Ruthless Oliseh And 4 Other Things Learnt From Nigeria Vs Niger

https://d1bez7r3o7wd77.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/he12.jpg
The Home Eagles began their CHAN campaign on a winning note defeating Niger 4-1 in Rwanda on Monday.

Here are 5 things that we learnt from the encounter as presented by Completesportnigeria.com's JOHNNY EDWARD…

1. Oliseh is no respecter of players
Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh for the umpteenth time showed he isn't a respecter of players when wielding the big axe.

The ex-international wasted no time in hauling off Jamiu Alimi after 16 minutes when the defender failed to settle in.

Oliseh also hauled off Lukman Haruna after 15 minutes against Tanzania in Dar- Es- Salaam, and wasted no time in substituting Rabiu Ibrahim in the goalless draw against Swaziland.

The former Borussia Dortmund star also left out the trio of John Mikel, Obafemi Martins and Elderson Echiejile from the starting line-up that beat Swaziland 2-0 in Port Harcourt.

2. Okoro, Chikatara the new kids on the block
Osas Okoro came on to the scene in 2011 when Samson Siasia was coach of the team but waited for four years to gain recognition.

The Rangers FC playmaker scored Nigeria's first goal in the on-going African Nations Championship in Rwanda and provided an assist for Chisom Chikatara's stunning goal.

Chikatara proved his 13 goals wasn't a fluke in the just concluded Nigerian Premier League season.

The Eagles star took his chances cleverly when he had them. First, a thunderous strike from the edge of the box while the second and third were clinical finishes from the box.

At the moment, they are both undroppable for the game against Tunisia on Friday until they fail to put up the performance that endeared him to the hearts of the Nigerian coach.

3. Eagles are yet to be clinical finishers
The Home Eagles scored all four goals in the second half of their opening win against Niger but could have scored more than that.

Chisom Chikatara scored a second half hat trick after he came on as a substitute to win the Orange Man of the Match to send Nigeria top of group C but also missed good opportunities.

From 17 shots, 11 on goal, Nigeria could only score four goals, showing the Eagles are not yet clinical enough.

4. Eagles are slow starters
For the umpteenth time, the Eagles failed to stamp their authority in the opening stages of a game.

The failed to string good passes in their play but grew in confidence as the game wore on to extend their winning streak against the Mena to five games.

5. Who is missing GbolahanSalami?
Warri Wolves forward Gbolahan Salami pulled out of the African Nations Championship currently due to his aspirations of playing abroad.

The Eagles star will not be missed as the attack of Tunde Adeniji, Chisom Chikatara and Osas‎ Okoro look like delivering.

Chisom Chikatara Named MVP Of Nigeria Vs Niger Clash

By David Meshioye and Adeboye Amosu in Kigali:
Chisom Chikatara was named Man-of-the-Match after his brilliant performance in the home-based Super Eagles' 4-1 win against Niger Republic at the on-going Championship for African Nations here in Kigali on Monday.

The Abia Warriors striker was awarded with a plaque and the match ball.

Coming on as a second half substitute for Tunde Adeniji, Chikatara doubled the Eagles lead in the 74th minute off a fine assist from Osas Okoro.

In the 82nd minute, Chikatara restored the Eagles two-goal lead after Niger reduced the deficit.

He put the game beyond the Nigeriens by slotting home Nigeria's fourth goal and also completed his hat-trick.

https://d1bez7r3o7wd77.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/IMG_20160118_180744.jpg
Former champions, Tunisia, and Guinea played 2-2 in Group C opening game at the ongoing Championship for African Nations on Monday.

Ahmed Akaichi opened the scoring for Tunisia in the 33rd minute.
With five minutes remaining in the first half, Alseny Camara drew Guinea level.

Akaichi grabbed his second goal of the game and Tunisia's second when he struck on 51 minutes.

But with five minutes left, Camara salvaged a point for Guinea and his second goal of the game.

Ighalo eyeing Aubameyang’s CAF Award

https://sunnewsonline.com/new/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Odion-Ighalo.jpg
Nigeriaand Watford striker Odion Ighalo has revealed that he’s aiming to topple the Gabon and Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as CAF African Footballer of the Year.

The Super Eagle’s player was speaking to a Nigerian football website, Football Live.ng saying he’d like to break the 19-year absence of Nigerians in the running for the African award.

The reports revealed that Nwankwo Kanu was the last Nigerian to win the honours, but several players that had come close include John Obi Mikel who finished as runner up to Ivory Coast’s Yaya Toure.

Despite winning the award for the past three years, Yaya, was beaten by the Gabonese skipper with the Elephants saying it was unfair for him to lose the award. He also lashed out at CAF as well as questioning the award criteria after the ceremony.

The Watford FC goal poacher was voted the EPL’s Player of the Month for December and said hard work and teamwork were the key to his brilliant form.

“I must thank my teammates for their contribution to every goal I scored. I owe them a lot for the award,” said Ighalo.

“Most people do not see the hard work I put into my game, the feel I just show up and score goals.
“Aubameyang (Pierre-Emerick) showed up and won the award (APoTY) and I think I can do the same. It will require a lot of hard work but it is surely achievable.”

The next CAF Award for the African Player of the Year is set to be announced after the 2017 CAF African Cup of Nations in Gabon next year.

Christian Chukwu

Former Super Eagles manager Christian Chukwu has described as a good start the side's massive win against the Mena of Niger at the ongoing African Nations Championship (Chan) in Kigali, Rwanda.

The Eagles outclassed neighbours Niger 4-1 in Monday’s Group C second match at the 22,000 seats Stade Regional Nyamirambo, Kigali.

Enugu Rangers forward Osas Okoro netted the opener in the 46th minute and substitute Chisom Chikatara, who emerged the man of the match, grabbed a hat-trick while the Nigeriens scored the consolation through danger-man and substitute Zakari Adebayor.

Chukwu said the convincing victory will further boost the side's confidence confronting the other two group’s tougher opponents, Tunisia and Guinea.

“It’s a good result and the right way to start their title campaign at the African Nations Championship in Rwanda.

“The massive win will certainly motivate the team to go further in the biennial football championship.

“At least the victory has come at the right time to further boost their confidence as they march to confront tougher opponents, Tunisia and Guinea.

“Of course, Tunisia and Guinea will certainly be tougher than Niger Republic given the hard fought 2-2 draw in their own clash.

“Three points is quite good for the Eagles going forward in the championship in Kigali, Rwanda,” said the former Nigerian strongman to supersport.com.

Eagles will engage the North African giants, Tunisia on Friday at the Stade Regional Nyamirambo in Kigali while the last group match will be against West African foes, Guinea on Tuesday, January 26.

Mali will face Uganda in Gisenyion Tuesday, in their Group D opener for the 2016 African Nations Championship.

The two sides are making their third consecutive appearance at the continental competition, having experienced mixed fortunes at the previous two events.

After suffering a first round exit in Sudan in 2011, the Eagles managed to reach the quarterfinals in South Africa in 2014 while the Cranes are yet to make it past the group stage.

Hit with financial and logistical problems during their preparation – they didn’t play a single international friendly - , the Malians are, however, determined to reach the knockout stage with a place in the top three as their ultimate objective.

“Our first objective is to get through the group stage. Then it will be the knockout stage, and we will fight for a place in the top three and why not to win the title,” Eagles coach Djibril Dramé said.

“All is going well within the squad. The players are happy to be here and will do their best to get something out.”

Meanwhile, Uganda are as desperate to make it through the first round for the first time ever.

The Cranes warmed up to the tournament with back-to-back draws against Gabon and Cameroon and are looking to get their CHAN campaign off to a positive start.

“Although we respect Mali, we are ready to give our best because we need a good start in the tournament,” head coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic said.

“After failing to make it at the 2011 and 2014 tournaments, we now want to improve and get to the knock out stage of the tournament,” added the Serbian tactician, who will have to cope in the absence of suspended midfield duo Ivan Ntege and Hassan ‘Dazo’ Wasswa.

The game will kick off at Umuganda Stadium at18h00CAT on Tuesday, with Zimbabwe battling Zambia in the other Group D clash at15h00 CAT.

How Home Eagles Rated Vs Niger

 18 Jan 2016
 CHAN, Headlines

The Super Eagles started their 2016 African Nations Championship on a winning note Monday evening. The home-based Eagles side scored four second-half goals after a dour first half to defeat the Mena of Niger 4-1.

Completesportsnigeria.com's IZUCHUKWU OKOSI rates the Eagles stars after the game…

Roger Milla Tips Home Eagles For CHAN Title

https://d1bez7r3o7wd77.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/home-eagles-CHAN.jpg
By Adeboye Amosu and David Meshioye in Kigali:
Cameroonian legend, Roger Milla, insists Nigeria can win a first African Nations Championship in Rwanda, reports Comple tesportsnigeria.com.

Milla, who earned rave reviews for his impressive showing for the indomitable Lions at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, was at the Kigali Regional Stadium on Monday to watch the Group C fixture between Nigeria and Niger.

The former striker who was highly impressed with the performance of the Eagles in the game told completesportsnigeria.com that Sunday Oliseh's charges are good enough to win the competition.

"The Nigeria team is good. They have really good players and have a good chance of winning the title," Milla told Comple tesportsnigeria.com.

"They were fantastic in the second half and I love the build-up to their goals.

"If they can work on some of their mistakes, like starting the game slowly, then I see them winning the competition."

The Eagles sit at the top of Group C with three points, with Guinea and Tunisia have one point each. Niger are occupying last position with no point.

Action will resume in the group on Friday with Nigeria taking on Tunisia, while Niger and Guinea will also do battle.

No Way Back For Alimi After Horror Show Vs Niger

https://d1bez7r3o7wd77.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/Alimi-chan.jpeg
By Adeboye Amosu and David Meshioye in Kigali:
Home Eagles defender, Jamiu Alimi, may have played his last game for the side at the African Nations Championship in Rwanda, a top official of the side has disclosed to Comple tesportsnigeria.com.

The Shooting Stars defender started the game alongside Stephen Eze in central defence, but was hauled after 16 minutes and was replaced by Kalu Orji who put in an impressive display following his introduction.

And with first choice centre-back, Austin Obaroakpo, set to return to action in Friday's fixture against Tunisia it looks likely the former Ukraine-based Alimi is now the last choice in the position.

"It's going to be difficult for Jamiu (Alimi) to comeback into the team with the performance of Eze and Orji against Niger," revealed the source to Comple tesportsnigeria.com.

"You know we still have Austin who is obviously the first choice in the position.

"The coach will have to make a big decision on who will pair him between Eze and Orji in the next game against Tunisia.

"I bet you, it is going to be a tough decision for him to make."

Oliseh: Home Eagles Not Title Contenders Yet

https://d1bez7r3o7wd77.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/oliseh-sunday.jpg
Interview By David Meshioye & Adeboye Amosu in Kigali:
Congratulations coach, on your team's victory against Niger. Your players started the game slowly and were a bit tensed up. What was responsible for this?

You are right. In the first half we were very poor. We didn't do things right and failed to play to our strength. We had a gameplan which we did not follow and it reflected in our overall performance on the pitch.

To be fair on the players, it was the first big tournament some of them will be participating in and it affected their performance in the first 45 minute.

l was once a player myself and know what it is when you play in tournament of this nature, for the first time. But I think towards the end of the first half, I mean the last 15 minutes, we improved a little bit and continued from there after the break.

Your players came out like wounded lions in the second half and scored four good goals, what did the magic? Did you tell them anything special during the break?

(Long laughter). What I told the players, I wouldn't want to reveal to anyone. One thing that was clear before the break was that the players were not expressing themselves well on the pitch.

We knew they were better than that and it was up to them to show the world what they were capale of.

We made some changes which also make the team better and stronger. I would not want to go beyond that. Let me keep the rest to myself (long laughter).

Your first choice centre-back and vice-captain, Austin Obaroakpo missed the game due to injury and you took off Jamiu Alimi early in the game, and his replacement Kalu Orji impressed along with Stephen Eze? Are you going to stick with the pairing in he next game?

The beauty of this team is that we have two quality players in each position and it was visible in the game against Niger. At the moment, I cannot say if Austin is going to come back in the next game or not.

We have a couple of days to train before the next game against Tunisia and we will determine who plays on the basis of the players' performance in training.

Talking about Jamiu, he is a good defender. We will talk to him and help him get back to his best.

Chisom Chikatara came into the game and scored a hat-trick, how would you describe his performance?

We are happy for him. He is a good lad who has a bright future ahead of him. We hope he keeps improving and score more goals in the competition.

The other substitutes (Kalu Orji and Usman) did well too. All the players were determined to start the competition on a positive note and I want to congratulate them for the victory.

You have tried to tone down the pressure on your players concerning Nigerians' expectations in this competition by saying you are trying to build a team for the future. Now that you have started with this impressive victory, should fans back home start believing that you will win the trophy?

I know in my country we don't know anything about friendly games. We want to win every game no matter who we are playing against, even if it is the so called minnows or big footballing nations like Brazil or Argentina.

The average age of the players in this team is around 22, and from the onset, I made it clear I wanted to build the team from the scratch. That is what we have been doing and I strongly believe we are on the right track.

At the moment, it won't be right for me to say we are going to lift the trophy just after one game.
We still have a long way to go and we take it one game at a time.

On a final note, how are you looking forward to the next group game against Tunisia?

Right now, I don't want to talk about that. What is important now is for us to savour this victory and rest a little bit, then we can start thinking about the next game.

2016 CHAN: Ekpo Hails Eagles’ First Win, Demands Another Killer-Spirit Vs Tunisia

By James Agberebi:
Former Nigeria international Friday Ekpo has hailed the home-based Super Eagles' showing in their 4-1 win against Niger at 2016 CHAN‎ and urged them to reproduce same winning spirit in their next match against Tunisia.
A Chisom Chikatara hat-trick and a goal also from Osas Okoro, gave the Eagles the emphatic win.

Speaking with ‎Completeportsnigeria.com, Ekpo said:
"I will say congratulation to the team. Winning the first game is very important. But they shouldn't let it get into their heads," Ekpo remarked during exclusive chat with Completesportsnigeria.com‎.

Speaking ahead of their next game against Tunisia, Ekpo urged the players to replicate the performance they displayed against Niger.

"The approach towards the Tunisia game shouldn't be different from the game against Niger.

"They have seen the Tunisians and know what to expect. So they should play as a unit and be focus on what they want to get."

The Eagles top Group C on three points. Tunisia and Guinea are joint second with one point each.

Carragher, Rodgers Fault Watford’s Over-Dependence On Ighalo, Deeney

https://d1bez7r3o7wd77.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/ighalo3.jpg
Former Liverpool duo; Jamie Carragher and Brendan Rodgers, have voiced concern over Watfords’ over-reliance on Odion Ighalo and Troy Deeney for goals following the Hornets' 1-0 defeat at Swansea City on Monday night.

Watford suffered their fourth straight loss against Swansea, who have not had the best of seasons.

According to watfordobserver.co.uk, the duo were speaking as analysts on Sky Sports Monday Night Football and reiterated it was time for the other Watford players to start contributing their own fair share of the goals.

Carragher said: “We spoke all season about how great the front two (Ighalo and Deeney) have been and they have been, but they (Watford) do rely on them too heavily. There’s only been one goal from open play all season, the first goal Watford scored of the season at Goodison (Miguel Layun in the 2-2 draw at Everton) where these (Ighalo and Deeney) haven’t scored or assisted and it just shows how influential they are.

“We see the people underneath, there’s four players with one goal. Nathan Ake’s one goal was a big mistake from the Liverpool goalkeeper and Ben Watson scored direct from a set piece.

"Of course they still count as goals but they’re flukes really, they’re not something you can expect to happen every three or four weeks.

“It is a big worry for them. I think they had two or three shots on target and you mentioned the front two weren’t involved in those. I said at half-time they didn’t have any touches in the box.

Carragher continued: “This is four on the bounce that they’ve lost and the front two aren’t going to be on fire every week. The best strikers in the country aren’t on fire every week so the front two for Watford aren’t going to be able to provide that, so they’re going to need help from midfield players to chip in.

“They’ve lost four on the bounce but if that goes to six, seven without a win and while they’ve been looking that way [up the table], they’ll start looking over their shoulder.”

On his part, Rodgers said: “Especially when you’re a newly-promoted team. The two front boys, you can’t say anything negatively against them. It’s now up to the other boys in the team to provide that ammunition and score the goals, whether it’s the wide players, a bit more contribution from central midfield but the front two have been outstanding.

“You lose four, it can come very quickly in the Premier League because of the level and could become five, six, seven and then the confidence can really go. So it will be important for them to get a positive result, it may not be a win, but just to stop the rot in the next performance.”

Alimi vows to improve after nightmarish start at CHAN

https://npfl.ng/images/Super-Eagles-Chan.jpg
From Adepoju Tobi in Rwanda
After a jittery start in the Nigerian squad to the 2016 African Championship (CHAN) which saw him substituted early in the match against Niger Republic, Super Eagles and Shooting Stars defender, Jamiu Alimi has told npfl.ng that he will work harder and pick himself up as the championship progresses.

The central defender was an early substitute on Monday against Niger Republic at the Nyamirambo Stadium, Kigali after he got booked by Egyptian referee, Ibrahim El Din in the opening 10 minutes of the game.

Seven minutes after, head coach, Sunday Oliseh substituted the Oluyole Warriors defender for Rangers International defender, Orji Kalu to partner Stephen Eze in the heart of the team's defence.

“I’m not disappointed with my performance and the early substitution. The coach saw things from his view and I think the decision to substitute me was right as it was a sacrifice to avoid more harm to the team," Alimi said to npfl.ng after the game.

Alimi continued: “I think the referee was too harsh in his decisions, but his decision has to be respected. He was doing his job just as we had to do ours and deliver the result.

“In the early minutes I got booked for a decision I won’t agree deserved to be a card offence, but it's more important for us to play safe, and it was a good decision from the technical crew to sacrifice me and not hurt the game plan.

“It is a challenge to me, I don’t think I played too badly in the game but such are meant to happen, some ugly moments. It is even a big advantage to the team in terms of competition among the players. I have to be on my toes and work harder to get back into the starting squad.”

Alimi opined that the team were better off in the second half after a lot of struggle in the first half.

“We were a bit slow in the first half, but the most important thing is that we came out stronger and compact in the second half.

“We have worked hard for the championship, although first games always come with lots of pressure and interest but we are excited we were able to shake off the tension and got the needed result.

“The coach has told us we need to take it game by game, we are focused and the next target is the game against Tunisia on Friday,” he said.

CHAN 2016: Chikatara’s three deadly goals showed he is another Eagle ready to soar

https://media.premiumtimesng.com/wp-content/files/2016/01/479x307xunnamed-1.jpg.pagespeed.ic.wMuOWVYsMq.jpg
Jide Alaka
It was definitely a glorious outing for little-known 21-year old Chisom Chikatara on Monday as his three goals in the second half ensured that Nigeria beat Niger 4-1 and assumed leadership of group C.

The Abia Warriors striker started on the bench and was cooling his bum for 58 minutes before Super Eagles manager, Sunday Oliseh, decided to throw the striker into the fray at the Stade Regional de Nyamirambo in Kigali, and like they say, the rest is history.

It was then a story not needing too much time to make an impression as he hit a hat-trick in 32 minutes and really if he had taken all his chances the Umuahia-born forward could have scored five goals.

But who is Chisom Chikatara?
Social Media has been awash with the ‘Kolanut Boy’ since his MVP feat on Monday night but why kolanut? Chisom actually used to hawk Kolanut around Umuahia, before he broke into the first team of the then Nigeria National League side, Abia Warriors.

His goals led them to promotion in 2013, and since then he has not looked back. He finished the 2015 season with 15 goals as he helped his side to a commendable 10th-place finish.

But going into CHAN 2016 tournament, he was rated as the back-up striker to Sunshine Stars’ Tunde Adeniji.

He ensured with his display on Monday that he should start against Tunisia on Friday.

But what are the features that ensured Chisom had such a dramatic impact on being thrown into the fray?

Pace
Strikers always strive to gain at least a yard on their markers and Chikatara has that electric pace over five yards that ensures he is able to maneuver his way into great scoring positions. It is something that is called the striker’s instinct and mostly cannot be taught but can be enhanced.

Deathly Cool
The best strikers are those that can block out everything when their scoring chance arrives and his three goals against Niger showed all that coolness. Even though he could have scored five – the missed chances showed that he needs to trust his left foot a bit more and make up his mind on one-on-one occasions. But that will come with better coaching and playing against better opponents.

Intelligent Running
Whereas Adeniji plays like a bulldozer [and this has its benefits], Chikatara relies on getting himself into scoring positions in almost every forward thrust. He does not jostle or tussle with central defenders [just like Sergio Aguero] but he is always hanging on the shoulder of the last defender, waiting for passes over the top.

Before the tournament kicked off last Saturday, Chikatara had said in an interview by the Nigeria Football Federation that, “all I want is to make Nigeria proud.”

He has more than made us proud.
He is making a name for himself. Coach Oliseh had said before the tournament, “the players are very young and we plan to integrate some of them to the main team for the AFCON and World Cup qualifiers.”

Surely now, if Chikatara continues to impress and score goals, he might just have knocked another Europe-based Eagle off Oliseh’s roster.

Super Eagles and Abia Warriors forward, Chisom Chikatara, was filled with excitement after netting the first hat-trick of the 2016 African Nations Championship (CHAN) but had the presence of mind to dedicate his Man-of-the-Match award to his late mother.

Nicknamed the Kolanut Boy by the media in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), Chisom came on as a second half substitute to secure victory for the Super Eagles with three strikes in a space of 16 minutes.

It was the Super Eagles opening fixture which they won 4-1 against Niger Republic. Osas Okoro got on the scorers' sheet first before Chikatara took the game by the scruff of the neck.

“I’m excited and happy. The fact that the goals were enough to secure the victory for the team makes it great for me.

“I appreciate the coach for the opportunity given to me to play and my teammates for the solid team work that got me the goals.

“I feel great for this achievement, I will continue to work hard alongside my teammates and hopefully I can finish as the tournament top scorer. However, that is not the target for now because it is not a perfect team yet,” Chikatara told npfl.com.

Chikatara lost his mother during the NPFL 2014/15 season and he expressed a wish that the mother was alive to witness his exploits in CHAN.

“I wished she is alive tonight, I felt emotional after scoring those goals. I’m dedicating my MVP award to her, she motivated me and encouraged my career," he said.

Nigeria sit top of Group C with three points, Tunisia and Guinea are tied on one point each, while Niger Republic are bottom of the log.

Nigeria will face Tunisia while Niger Republic will tackle Guinea on Friday.

Nigeria: Martins Open to Premier League Return

Nigeria striker Obafemi Martins has left the door open to a return to the English Premier League.

Martins has scored 43 goals in 84 appearances for Seattle Sounders since joining the MLS side in March 2013.

His form in the US earned him a recall to the Super Eagles squad after more than two years' absence.

He has also attracted admirers in England, with Aston Villa making an approach for the player, according to Martins.

The striker says he rejected the approach from the Premier League's bottom side.

Bournemouth, former club Newcastle, and Sunderland are all also reportedly interested in him.

"I love the English Premier League and you never know what can happen in football," Martins told BBC Sport.

"I don't know what's going to happen tomorrow but I will never say never when it comes to going back to England.

"When I left Newcastle, I never forgot all about England and when the chance to return with Birmingham City on loan came, I took it." Martins burst into the international limelight at Italian side Inter Milan before switching to Newcastle in August 2006. He scored 35 goals in his three seasons with the Magpies.

The striker, who has also had spells in Germany, Russia and Spain, will be remembered for scoring Birmingham City's winner in their 2-1 Carling Cup final victory over Arsenal in 2011. - the club's first silverware since 1963.

"People still talk about it everywhere I go," he said.
"Birmingham City fans truly appreciate my contribution there.

"I've won trophies elsewhere but that one was special to the club. You get the same feeling at every football club but in England.

Football is very powerful. "I enjoyed some amazing times in England and I will never close the door on a possible return." Seattle Sounders' pre-season begins on 22 January. The English Premier League's January transfer window, meanwhile, closes on 1 February.

Martins has scored 18 goals in 41 international appearances for three-time African Champions Nigeria and was voted Africa's most promising talent in 2003 and 2004.
