Shows us the FG's policy that states all goods must be cleared in Lagos.

I do not understand why conducting a little research on the issue is your problem. What made the beer parlour opinion of the OP to be the correct FG's policy?

our cases are clearly of the blind leading the blind.

Here comes another fabricated lies.

There is no policy anywhere. SW axis is where the market is because of the purchasing power of the people in that axis. Hence, importers will route their goods through Lagos.

Simple as ABC.

Go to your town hall meetings and demand that all your igbo brothers should be importing only through Onne and listen to their response.

Ask all the SE traders who have moved from their base in the east to Lagos, with the high rent and cost of commerce why it is so attractive.

Ask the foreign missions and multinationals who moved their HQ to Lagos in the light of the insecurity in the ND and SE amdd North due to kidnapping and brigandry. Even with the craze NURTW have tbey have never been known to kidnap a expatriate for ransom.

Ask the numerous governors who have run Lagos from Maruwa to Ambode who know the secret to attracting internal and external investors is creating a good environment, I was shocked when my cousin who is doing rather very well in Abuja told me during weekends Abuja is empty cause everyone goes to Lagos to enjoy the fruits of their labour.

Ask the citizenry who have created an accommodating enviromr for all who come to seek the Nigerian dream of fame and fortune so long they come with good intentions.

Lagos is the centre of Nigeria, and while PH and Enugu can be fun they do not have the woaw factor Lagos has, be jealous very jealous.

I'm not even a lagosian I hate the city, it is too rowdy for me, too busy, too congested, but I appreciate the reality of things.

Stop blaming the Yoruba for taking what they had and making good gains over time, this your tribalistic excuse is getting long in the tooth. Blame the citizenry of that state for not assaulting the ills in their society, God forbid the day the son born into a good house with ancestry decenfs into the vagabond levels MEND did, destroying the pipelines and by so doing the rivers and farms their people feed off. Go find out what the Yoruba call such children

Yes great speech! Applaudusé!

Now.. Sir,

Do you think that this "insecurity" in the ss would have started
If the youths were employed?

Open any job listing and see that 90% of advertised jobs are in Lagos. Why?

Oil companies operate in ss, flunt their huge cash everywhere,
Employ the barest minimum and pay them peanuts compared to the work they do.

Both the employed and unemployed in ss are not happy (mostly).

So in your opinion,
Is this "insecurity" you keep pointing out an inbuilt culture in ss people?

Am sure u know the solution already ... Let's hear yours

"purchasing power of the people (sw) "
Seriously?

Sir.. What do the sw people do to earn this purchasing power you speak of?

Please explain how that makes a man who wants to sell his goods
prefer To pass the goods through Lagos and pay trucks N50,000 and more
to deliver it after custom duties.

Some still clear their goods through onne port but most of them that do that import machines to set up factories and not consumables. Dangote use onne port to move his cement to the east.

Because the market is closer to Lagos.

Most people would want to dock close to wher3 the market is

Lagos Plus the Southwest have a population of over 40M why would you want to dock close to the SE where they dont have the buying population there

If you are importing say generators, you dock in Onne, one docks in Lagos, Assuming its the same cost of landing. you would have to spend extra to transport yours to the Southwest where most of the buyers reside while Mr B sends less

Hmm.. SIR

What do you think made 40milion people (according to you) congregate at lagos + sw area?

I think it's business, which mostly sterns from the seaport.
Now imagine we make another seaport functional
and another boisterous economy like that in lagos + sw
Is created..
Don't you think Nigeria will be a better place?

Do you know how much customs pays as demurrage daily?
As at 2009, it was in newspapers that it stood at 1bilion naira!

Do you know that to move a container from lagos to PH
Costs not less than 100k?

Importers don't move the containers..
The empty them and use 911 trucks which are cheaper.

A full ship don't discharge all container at Lagos port but it discharge much of its container there. The rest of the containers are sent to other west African country. Now how will you like to rigmarole from onne port to other west African country.

So it's better for the government to allow them to berth at lagos
and increase the cost of living in the country by
charging us demurrage daily, weekly even for months?

Do you know that the minimum demurrage days they collect is 4days?

That's because it is not fully functional..

Very few ships berth there
And leaving it to be used by mainly oil firms means
they charge cutthroat rates knowing oil firms got the money.

Government can change that can so not?

Sweetgala, I must confess, you are just too intelligent. You correctly highligted the reasons so as to school the uninformed ones.

@ realityshot, you guys should clear your heads of this mentality that hausa /fulani and yorubas are your problems and therefore your enemies. Your region is not the only one sidelined in Nigeria. Infact, all regions and the masses are the ones that have been sidelined.

I can relate with the security reason highlighted above. let me tell you a personal experience. My company would have loved to commence ferry business that would run through the whole of SS but for the militancy, kidnapping and pirate activities there, they moved the business to Benin and Ghana which will commence in the second quarter of this year.

@chiefobdk, if I hear say kidnapping no dey SS again. Also Read the paragraph above

Are you to blame? is the SS region to blame? is my company to blame. The answer is NO. It's just unfortunate the way things have turned out in Nigeria

May God heal Nigeria

At what point in my post was ethnic differences implied or "sideline"

It's a matter of efficiency...

If the youths cause problems because of unemployment..
Government should create jobs with out much PROPAGANDA.

TBH.. I only liked your post because you added God..
But seriously.. God gave us choice
And HE gave the children of Isreal a king as they wanted.

So we should not wait for miracle.
Nigerians have the power to heal the economy.

Re: Onne Sea Port by IGBOPRINCE: 12:43pm On Jan 20, 2016

It is not politics and the government beyond creating a favourable environment, by making clearing charges and conditions more attractive in onne can not force private owned vessels to dock at oone if Lagos remains favourable.

There are several reasons and I'll expand on them

1- Reliability and history

For many years this vessels which trade and call at the Nigerian port have docked in Lagos, the captain understand the area from a seafaring perspective. They've always gone to Lagos and have a planned route which may involve visiting multiple ports along West Africa. Ships are not planes they take weeks to cross the ocean. There is no reaon a ship can not dock at onne and then process to Lagos

2 - Safety

PH is the Capital of kidnapping in Nigeria, it is also in proximity to the MEND and ND vandalism and piracy. Why would a ship ladden with goods worth millions of dollars go near such a port, some of these foreign owned and registered ships are not even insured to go near onne.

It is up to the PH SG and governors forum of that GP zone to resolve the security issues for their own benefit. You can't blame a bunch of Yoruba people in Lagos for the actions of PH and ND citiEnrry and it's effect.

3 - Demand

Lagos remains the centre of commerce and trade on Nigeria, and it is used and accessed by all Nigerians, some 50% of imported consumer goods on those ships belong to people from SE, these same people can bring the goods through onne but they'd rather land their goods safely in Lagos ths risk it being hijacked in PH.

Lagos is more central and accessible to.other parts of Nigeria than PH , if the second Niger bridge is built this may equalise things a little.

Govenemt can not force the concept of demand to change, it can only alter it's supply of said demand to encourage individuals to use alternatives

There are other reasons but those are simple immediate ones
you have spoken well but the eastern enclaves as a whole is more closer to north central state,(middle belt) and also north east, lagos and western enclaves.
Come to onitsha and see men from kaduna, jos, benue, ondo and kano state, coming to onitsha main market to buy their goods.
I know lagos too well, from lagos to abuja/benue state is too far. Nothing more central in lagos bro. Lagos is at the extreme end of nigeria.
Pls lagos is not a central state at all. I believe you said so cos you re not a traveller like me.
Only igbos can tell you how nigeria look like. We re just like a sand in every part of nigeria.

I guess the facility involves in lagos seaports draw customers to them. We need such facility in onne seaport.
I believe only time will tell.

Bros you don't understand the eastern market. More than 50% of goods used in the east are produced in the east unlike in Lagos where more that 90% are imported.

Anything you import today in Aba or ontisha that moves market. Umuoma will do the copy for you. There is no market for export in the east.

Don't think the goods imported on Lagos are used in Lagos alone. Many see Lagos a business conference zone where they can come from anywhere to go and buy. East don't have such market as yet.

If we must develop our market, we must focus more on what we know how to do best - manufacturing.
