your post is flawed, total error,

where you live, you are seeing what you pay for.

in Nigeria, the ones we pay are being looted and stolen.

We pay for light we don't use, sometimes Over estimated bills.

let the government judiciously use the ones we have paying now, we will be glad to pay more. Not paying taxes and it ends in a politicians pocket.

I'v wanted to write this article for over 2 months but its discouraging thinking about the number of points i need to raise to support my claims! NIGERIANS WANT THE BEST THINGS BUT NEVER WANT TO PAY FOR IT!! HOW ON EARTH DO YOU WANT YOUR COUNTRY TO DEVELOP?!

Quick question; Imagine government fixes Nigeria's issues of electricity and internet with other basic amenities today, Who here would be willing to pay an annual rent of N1million for a single room (Not one bedroom flat oo) in a city like Ado-Ekiti and N3million for the most average single room (shared toilet and bathroom with at least one other person e.g face me, I face you houses) in a city like Lagos?! Note: This is just basic rent and is therefore without utility bills such as Electricity, Heating, Water, Garbage, Internet etc that averages about another N900,000 yearly.

I couldn't stop shaking my head at the gullibility of some Nigerians as i read the various comments on the N50 bank charges thread. That is what? 2cents charge on banking transactions that does not even include savings account that most of the commenters use oo! Even South Africa reportedly demands that you pay an equivalent of N500 for deposits into your own account (Savings or Current)! Where I live, you are demanded to pay an equivalent N4,200 in charges for deposit into another's account if you aren't a customer of the bank!

Nigeria has the lowest VAT tax in the world and i'm sure y'all will take to the streets in protests if this is ever increased! I pay N1,500 in charges for every ATM interbank withdrawal of an equivalent of N10,000 and you all couldn't stop screaming at the N65 naira (after 3rd transaction) that was introduced by the CBN last year! Haba Nigerians!! You want to live 'comfortably' like Americans and Europeans but aren't ready to pay the price! Who does that sh*t! One of the major reasons why you don't enjoy goodies is because because you haven't had to pay enough taxes. It is partly a reason why the government doesn't feel very responsible to the people as well. Oil is not anyone's property anyways.

I really can't remember the last time i visited an hospital but i'm mandated to pay an equivalent of N23,000 monthly for health insurance! Would you be willing to pay such amount for the sake of development in the health care sector in Nigeria?! I don't think so but you would be the first to take pictures for nairaland about the pitiable state of one hospital in your city!

You want the best Infrastructures in the world but have never paid taxes from your businesses! Some people would rather close up shop than pay the most basic tax to the government! How on earth do you expect any development if you aren't ready to help government with funds? Nigeria is not the only country with oil, we don't even have as much as Russia but expect to get everything for free because there's oil in the land! What would y'all have done if you didn't have anything but rocks and granite? you would expect the government officials to use their personal incomes to develop the country first and then see if you like it or not before you decide to pay?! I no pity your destiny!

Nowhere in the world is mobile internet data cheap, Nigerians automatically feel they are being ripped off by mobile operators who use the same infrastructure that's being deployed everywhere else! For a 2gb mobile internet data allowance from T-mobile, I pay N5,000 monthly, This is not even close to what Nigerians get from the mobile operators but they scream to the heavens still. Agreed, cable/ADSL, wired internet is cheaper but you cant blame this on the telecom industries, Government should make provisions for that! But again, how many persons would not scream 'Rip off' if you all are asked to pay a mandatory internet fee ranging in thousands of Naira every month

From food to clothings, transportation, even prostitutes (Girls in brothels here charge at least 12k for a quickie, Don't ask me how i know grin), Nigerians live on the cheap and want to keep up with the expensive! No! It doesn't work that way! You have to pay for developments that leads to a robust economy which in turn leads to higher standard of living (Job creation, Increment in Minimum wage, Good roads, healthcare facilities etc)..
Re: Nigerians: You Live In A Paradise And Dont Even Know It! by Douglasdale(m): 12:21pm On Jan 20, 2016
The OP made some valid points but failed to realize the difference in the two situations.
First Nigeria's Government has collected huge sums of revenues from trade and taxes with out any tangible development to show for it. Accountability and probity is not the watch word and you expect to raise taxes when you have judiciously spent the money that has accrued to us? To whom much is giving... much is expected

So you want the government to use their personal incomes to develop the country first after which you will decide to contribute your quota to the economy if you like the results or not?!! i guess you should also ask them to help you put breakfast, lunch and dinner on your table!! You can't eat your cake and have it!
Oga sir, we pay Tax, civil servants and business men pay their taxes so i dont understand what you mean by the development in the West is as a result of taxes generated from citizens...even market women, taxi drivers and what av you do pay tax. Its not bad to ask for accountability in the utilization of Tax income.

My friend, it is you who needs to educate yourself.

Like I said to your earlier, Internet in most countries is not Free...or Cheap either.

I also told you that the so called 'free internet' is only a way to entice people to do business. See below for an extract from the link YOU provided...

Du is offering WiFi in three options — free unlimited and fast access to all the government websites and apps, free WiFi at low bandwidth and the premium speed at a nominal price.

1. The so called 'Free' access is at low bandwidth
2. To use Internet at a decent speed, you have to pay.

And this is in a public space too. Will people go and squat in a shopping mall to use 'Free' low bandwidth internet? Do you not understand that the so called 'Free' internet is only designed to entice people into paying for faster internet in that public space?

So if a restaurant opens today and provides a taster sample, your conclusion is that food is free at that restaurant?

In that case, the lights in public spaces count towards free electricity, and the air-conditioner in the shops count as free breeze... grin
Guy...you are extremely funny! government enticing people to pay for premium speed to private companies?

guy...slow or fast...it is freaking free! Even the govt of UAE described the project as fee wifi project.

And did you even read all the links i posted or you just want to argue for the sake of it?

No point man! you cant be helped!

Nigerians living abroad should be taxed too. After all, United States citizens residing and working abroad pay taxes to the US govt
You are suggesting that the government tax Nigerians abroad so that they can have money to buy more BMWs?
Besides the United States that newly introduced this policy, pray tell me which other countries are doing the same? Are you also aware that an increasing number of US citizens are giving up their citizenship because of this?
It is these silly flash ideas that are not thought through that are and will ruin things.
Just like the ill conceived directive banning banks from accepting foreign currency into domiciliary accounts that was reversed just a few days ago. I laughed when I got messages from Banks about the reversal and was spooked to read a few days later that the Banks were surprised people are not forthcoming.
What about the governments of the countries Nigerians are living requesting from our government payment for hosting and "taking care" of her citizens.

First, you don't call people ignoramus because you're trying to make a point, expecially when you may turn out to be the ignoramus at the end of the day.
Second, from your post I'm assuming you don't live in Nigeria, I wonder why that is, if we seem to be having it so rosy here, why don't you relocate to Nigeria to enjoy with us?
Third, Nigerians are smart people. They know what their money is being used for. When they suddenly start seeing charges that were not there before in their previous transactions, without an equivalent improvement in quality of services being provided, they raise eyebrows, like intelligent people often do.

This is a clear case of 'robbery'.

If a government's minimum wage is low compared to what obtains in other countries, if a country is unable to reduce unemployment rate, if a country is unable make things relatively easy for her citizens then the sacrifices towards correcting these ills must begin with the government.

Slash budgetary allocations to non-profit yielding things such as extravagant cars, feeding, govt house sports, animals etc.

Slash salary of public officials to a larger extent.

Reduce size of government - Senate & Reps na pure redundancy, cancel one and allocate the salaries and allowances to other things.

Having set above examples and more then you can tax us to death, we will comply.

The OP and his co-travellers, out of wanting to form 'exposed' or maybe out of being APC idi0ts have refused to face the realities with the Nigerian state.

This is the FG's way of making the masses bear the weight of the 5,000 naira stipend since we won't let it go.

@Jayfolarin
This is the best post so far, you just nailed it. APC paid agents are just trying to justify all the backdoor taxes to Nigerians. If the government is sincere, let them cut the cost of all the frivolous item budgeted and cut the unnecessary expenses of our politician both legislative and executive arm of government

What do you mean by "personal income"?
I hope you're not referring to the revenue being generated from various sources such as oil sales, payroll taxes, individual & company income taxes, etc, which all ultimately come from the 'guy on the street', and instead of being used for development, are being used by govt to buy private properties all over the world, finance election campaigns, and squander as they deem fit?
Some states have not paid their workers for more than 6months, the governors complain of being broke yet can't explain what they do with their monthly federal allocations & IGR!
I'm sure no father will be happy paying the school fees of a child who continually performs woefully despite all being provided. In the same vein, no one would be happy paying (increased) taxes when there's no light, no motorable roads, no salary, no good water, ...

Cut that man. Don't expect me to pay 8k out of my 17k for FFK to buy his girlfriend Range Rover Sport, for Jonathan to spend more than 4bn on election campaign and for Mr. Falae to pocket 50m. This is one mistake that those of you abroad make. The situation in most of the developed countries is not the same in Nigeria. How many Nigerians make $8 dollars per hour in Nigeria? What is the salary of an average Nigerian compared to what its counterpart abroad receives? The living conditions and the standard of living differs, so we should stop the unnecessary comparison. If electricity is fixed, Nigerians are ready to pay for it so long as the consume the product. Before now when we used to have constant electricity Nigerians pay for it but you cannot expect me to pay for electricity when the service is not available and a bill is still sent to me. Whether you like it or not, if our leaders do the right things, and govern well, Nigeria will be a better place to live compared to those developed countries.

Pidggin:
OP, you do not have sense(no offense). Assuming there are 5 million bank transactions in a month this means the FG will earn 250,000,000 in revenue from the masses each month.

Have you seen the proposed budget? Billions of Naira allocated for the purchase of cars, feeding, Kitchen utensils, websites, Travel, recreation allowances and many other frivolities for the president and his crew. If govt needs funds this much, they can borrow from the masses by issuing treasury bills. This way they gain and the masses gain too.

Where was it stated that it does not include savings account? All funds(from N1000 and above made by a third party) into any account will be taxed, go back and read the policy well before arguing

Your ignorance is epic, who told you businesses do not pay tax? If you operate a business in some states here you will understand that you cannot evade tax payment easily. In fact, in some states businesses are collapsing from multiple taxation

In some countries abroad data is the cheapest thing you can get. Ask people living in US or UK, some of them watch YouTube videos continously because they pay a paltry amount for it.

Stop accusing us of complaining for nothing because you will do same if you lived here.

Besides, during the recent visit of the IMF boss she said Nigeria was not broke. If this is true then why is FG now trying to take from the masses?

Nigerians don't know that "you get what you pay for", and it's because they don't love the country.

Govt should deduct N1,000 in form of medicare from salaries of people making N50k and up to build new hospitals.
The ones that they have been deducting in the time past, even up till today,is it not what they have been and are still looting
No matter you try to pacify this act,it is stealing from the masses.

How many of your professor received such an amount in Nigeria, the same restaurant workers in Nigeria would earn about 20000 naira per month.

Doctors are paid 150 dollars per hour in US that is about 750 dollars per day, the same money that their counterpart in Nigeria will received in one month and yet you expect us to pay 1 million in one room. A country were people received 10000 - 15000 naira monthly that is equivalent of 50 dollars a month. U expect us to pay 1 million naira per annum in a room. r u sure u r normal?

Dear op, Wah differs Nigeria from all the advanced nations is leadership. America and the likes were privileged to have visioneers as leaders in time past. They are reaping from the economic structure laid down by the Benjamin franklin n the likes. Accountability and vision are few of the virtues of great leaders. And Op with all honesty can you say you have ever paid for services not rendered. We all know how Americans take to d streets wen there's inequality in d justice system. Blacks expressing their displeasure towards racism despite paying taxes. So why bro will Nigerians not express theirs if they pay for services not rendered. And you saying we have to increase our tax first before getting better social provisions,I answer by saying let government start having a sense of direction n positive purpose.

Please what is the average disposable income in Nigeria.I understand where you are coming from but its not inclusive or realistic. It doesnt depict the prevailing conditions in the country. There are a lot of poor people in Nigeria. The low income group make up for over 80%.The minimum wage is rendered useless by inflation.

This is the best post so far, you just nailed it. APC paid agents are just trying to justify all the backdoor taxes to Nigerians. If the government is sincere, let them cut the cost of all the frivolous item budgeted and cut the unnecessary expenses of our politician both legislative and executive arm of government
My brother, thank you.
No sane person be it pdp or apc members should support this theivery. Austerity measures towards cushioning the effect of the nosedive of the economy should begin from the top.
