Fanendo Adi may be heading back to Europe from the MLS

Major League Soccer (MLS) champions Portland Timbers are reported to have placed a price tag of £2.5 million on Nigerian striker Fanendo Adi after they rejected a bid of £1.5 million from Russian club Rubin Kazan.

The 25-year-old Adi, who scored 19 goals last season for the MLS kings, is attracting interest from Scottish giants Celtic, German Bundesliga outfit Werder Bremen and Cardiff City in England.

He has already said he will want to return to Europe after he has played for Trencin in Slovakia, Ukrainian clubs Metalurh Donetsk, Dynamo Kiev and Tavriya Simgeropol as well as Copenhagen in Denmark.

He is a classic target man, who is good in the air and holds up play upfront for the rest of the team.

A point better than nothing – Djibril Dramé

by Stephane DeSaintsalvy
Mali coach Djibril Dramé said he was pleased with the performance of his side in their 2-2 draw against Uganda in Gisenyion Tuesday, in their 2016 African Nations Championship Group D opener.

The Eagles twice came from behind to earn a valuable point and keep alive their hopes of reaching the quarterfinals of the continental tournament.

The Cranes took the lead through full-back Joseph Ochaya on 12 minutes, with Mali U-17 star Sekou Koita levelling matters 10 minutes later.

And while Uganda skipper Faruku Miya restored their one-goal lead before the break, the Malians fought back again through Hamidou Sinayoko shortly after the restart.

“Uganda are the champions of East Africa, which means they are strong team. We had been working for three weeks and I’m happy with our performance,” Djibril Dramé said after the match.

“The first game is always important and to have a point is better than nothing.

“Our next game is against Zimbabwe. They eliminated us at the quarters two years ago in South Africa but things are different now. It is not the same team, same players, same environment and same kind of preparation so it will be a different game.”

Cameroon ready to pile more misery on Ethiopia

Cameroon will face Ethiopia in Butareon Thursday, in their 2016 African Nations Championship’s second Group B outing.

Joint top of the table with DR Congo after getting their Rwandan journey off to a winning start with a 1-0 victory over Angola, the Indomitable Lions will be looking to keep their momentum going and achieve their first objective of qualifying for the knockout stage.

But after being somehow lucky to escape with the three points against the Palancas Negras, playing the last 20 minutes of the match with 10 men, skipper Hugo Nyame and his teammates will have to raise their game against a wounded Ethiopian side.

The Walya Antelopes were thrashed 3-0 by DR Congo in their CHAN opener, and another defeat would mean the end of the road for the East African country.

The clash will kick off at Huye Stadium at18h00CAT on Thursday, with DR Congo to take on Angola in the other Group B fixture at15h00 CAT.

Lwandamina hails Chipolopolo victory

by Graeme Jackson
Zambia coach George Lwandamina hailed his side’s performance in their 1-0 win over Zimbabwe in their opening Group D clash at the 2016 African Nations Championship on Tuesday in Rubavu.

Chipolopolo edged their Southern African rivals thanks to a goal from veteran Isaac Chansa just before the hour mark.

The result sees Zambia top the group after the first round of matches, as Mali and Uganda played to a 2-2 draw in the later game.

“A first win is very important. It brings in the morale and that is how important it is. We came here to compete and winning this one won’t make us relax, we are still playing. We have to work more and more,” Lwandamina is quoted on SuperSport.

Lwandamina also praised the experienced pair of Chris Katongo and Isaac Chansa for their role in seeing Zambia through to victory.

Lwandamina said, “The experience which they have brought in to the team is massive. We saw this in the game but they have interacted so well on and off the pitch which is good for the team.

“The first games are so difficult because you do not know how prepared your opponents are. It is kudos to the players and the technical staff.”

Zambia will face Uganda on January 23 in their second CHAN Group D match.

With five players at the CHAN tournament, the Ondo State Football Agency will be delighted to see their representatives feature prominently in Sunday Oliseh's plans

By Solomon Fowowe
It's not too much of a stretch to say that the performances of Sunshine Stars' quintet of representatives at the African Nations Championship could prove decisive in deciding the fortunes of Sunday Oliseh's Nigeria.
https://static.goal.com/di/D5C5CA1DC8F1E4A78507FA6ABAA9A021.jpg
This was evident in the team's opener against Niger.

Ikechukwu Ezenwa was proper ‘Mr. Safe Hands’ between the sticks, plucking out crosses floated into his box on a regular basis. He was particularly impressive with the command of his area, dealing with the opposition threat aerially.

A heartening moment was when he leapt gloriously into the air, stretched his hands upwards to grasp a whipped cross with three Niger players challenging.

The guardsman was beaten by an unstoppable strike from distance off Zakari Adebayor’s boot. The only chance he might have had to stop the shot was if he somehow channelled Alloy Agwu who was seated with the technical crew. He was visibly chafed at some point and vented his anger vocally at the lack of protection he got from the defence that included club teammate Stephen Eze.

The defender received a rare start, with vice captain and starter Austin Obaroakpo suspended. He acquitted himself well in a commanding display in the heart of the defence, dwarfing the disappointingly wonky performance of the prematurely substituted Jamiu Alimi.
https://static.goal.com/di/60EC2E567992F9111BCD8BCA18F49888.jpg
Alimi |Hauled off in the early stages

Alimi was all at sea early on, dropping several clangers, and he was duly replaced by Kalu Orji in the 17th minute.

Eze, who slid into the left side of the central defensive pairing after Orji’s inclusion, defended on the front foot, stepping out of the defence to make timely interceptions and putting his willowy legs to good use. His performance against the Mena of Niger will surely have got Oliseh rethinking his established defensive pairing.

Onobi did a yeoman’s service shielding the defence. He, in Gilberto Silva’s words, ‘held the piano to let others play’, but he didn’t meet up to heightened expectations after his stellar performance against Swaziland.

Certain sections of the fanbase expected him to shield the defence, ping a breath-taking and heart-stopping pass, and also get on the end of the pass to finish with a volley after serious contortion. He didn’t do the lot, but the basics; he availed himself for a pass from the defence to ease the pressure and to start the attack with his passes, while his positioning allowed gadabout left-back Chima Akas to roam upfield to connect with the effervescent Prince Aggreh.

Onobi |More is expected...

While Onobi’s play might have lacked thrilling excitement, Aggreh offered loads of it, particularly in the first half.

He gave the defenders a torrid time down the left channel, offering fleet-footed brilliance and dynamism on the ball. His final balls, lofted crosses especially, were lacking but his purposeful runs brought fans to the edge of their seat.

Like the bubbling of youth, his flicks and tricks waned, but he completed his performance with an assist for hat-trick hero Chisom Chikatara.

The Sunshine Stars winger showed intelligent movement in and out of possession, receiving balls close to the touchline before powering a run, taking on the defender.

His combination work with Adeniji was not as telepathic as it is at club level, and they seemed on different wavelengths at times.

They failed to replicate the integrated movement they more than often displayed to the thrill of Akure fans this season, and Oliseh will be desperate for them to rediscover that chemistry.

With Aggreh a shoo-in for the next game, Tunde Adeniji might be reassessing the security of his position in the starting line-up after Chikatara’s goal rout.

The Akure Gunners striker was flagged offside a worrying amount of times, as his eagerness to burst into runs played perfectly into the tack of the Nigeriens who held a high line of defence.

Adeniji needed to take the edge off, and the half-time whistle offered that. Adeniji’s moment of calm produced an assist 30 seconds into the start into the second half, as the forward received the ball at the edge off the box, controlled it, lifted his head to suss out passing options, saw more than one option, and chose the perfect option with an inch-perfect cross! It was just high enough for Osas Okoro to volley past Alhassane Alzouma to send the crowd wild.

While the Sunshine Stars administrators may well be grinning from ear to ear, delighted at the impact their stars are having in the continental arena, they ought to be aware that there are vultures circling, primed to cherry-pick their beloved stats.

Oliseh won't care, and as long as the Stars are shining brightly, the Eagles will keep on flying high.

Aggreh: Tunisia should also be afraid of Nigeria

The forward knows the Super Eagles have threats of their own when they face the 2011 CHAN Champions in Kigali on Friday

EXCLUSIVE By Shina Oludare

Nigeria’s Prince Aggreh has warned Henryk Kasperczak and Tunisia that they should be wary of the Super Eagles in Friday’s meeting at the Stade Régional Nyamirambo despite winning the championship once.

The Super Eagles spanked Niger Republic 4-1 in their first match while the Carthage Eagles were forced to a 2-2 draw by Guinea.

And though the stylish forward recognises the north Africans will prove a tough test as they chase their first win in Rwanda, he feels his side’s team spirit and hunger for success is enough to strike fear into any opponent.

“"They should be scared of us," Aggreh, who tormented Niger’s defenders on Monday toldGoal.
“We have nothing to panic about.

Our match against Tunisia is like any other game and we will approach it with maximum concentration and determination.
“Winning the tournament before us makes no difference because we are here [in Rwanda] for a purpose and they won’t stop us achieving team.

Aggreh is one of the five Sunshine players in Sunday Oliseh’s team and he feels that has helped him build his confidence because of his closeness to them.

“Having them [Ikechukwu Ezenwa, Eze Stephen, Paul Onobi & Tunde Adeniji] in the starting XI makes me feel good because we know ourselves very well,” he continued.

“We play for the same team, know ourselves and have been staying together for over a long time. That has really helped because we understand ourselves perfectly on the field which is good for the team.

“Also, coach Oliseh has been helpful too because of his useful piece of advice all the time, and we can only hope we bring the trophy back to Nigerians,” he concluded.

A win for Nigeria against Tunisia on Friday will see them book an early flight to the quarter finals where they face Zambia, Mali, Zimbabwe or Uganda.

Nigerian players are determined to secure a place in the last eight of the African Nations Championship in Rwanda despite the delay in the payment of their winning bonuses, Comple tesportsnigeria.com can report.

The Eagles who are looking to win a first CHAN title started their campaign in the competition with a resounding 4-1 victory against next door neighbours Niger on Monday.

The players who are yet to receive their bonuses for the win are however unperturbed and are in good spirit ahead of the next game.

"At the moment the spirit in camp is high and nobody is talking about money because we are certain we will get it at the end of the day.

"We know the money has already been approved, so everyone is concentrated on the task ahead," an influential member of the squad revealed to Comple tesportsnigeria.com here in Kigali.

Another player also intimated Compl etesportsigeria.com on their resolve to do well in the competition.

"Our focus is on the next game and not on bonuses or allowances. We want to be heroes by winning the competition and not distract ourselves with something that we know we will surely get."

Austin Obaroakpo is set to make his return to Nigeria's starting line-up in Friday'Group C fixture against Tunisia at the African Nations Championship despite the impressive showing of Kalu Orji and Stephen Eze in their first game against Niger, reports Comple tesportsnigeria.com.

The home-based Super Eagles vice-captain missed the game due to suspension.
Eze and Orji impressed in his absence prompting many to suggest it will be difficult for him to get into the team.

A reliable camp source has however informed Comple tesportsnigeria.com that the Abia Warriors star will play his first game in the competition barring any injury problem.

"The coach is a huge fan of Austin and there is no way he won't start the game against Tunisia," the source revealed to Comple tesportsnigeria.com.

"Aside from that he has done well in training and he is our best central defender.

"The big decision now is who is going to partner him in central defence between Eze and Orji.

"Both of them were excellent against Niger and are capable of doing a good job."

Moses: West Ham Can Beat Man City Again

https://d1bez7r3o7wd77.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/West-Ham-moses.jpg
Victor Moses has expressed optimism that West Ham can do the double against Manchester City when both teams clash in the Premier League on Saturday.

In the reverse fixture at the Etihad, West Ham shocked City 2-1, with Moses scoring one of the goals.

In an interview on West Ham's official website, the Nigeria star stated that they have enough quality players to cause City problems.

“I remember the game very well. After the Newcastle game where I made my debut and we managed to get the three points, we then had another big game at Manchester City," Moses said.

“We went to the Etihad Stadium and were really looking forward to the game.

“It was really important that we got an early goal and that gave us the perfect springboard to work hard as a team and we then managed to get the second goal.

“They came back into the game and pulled a goal back right on half-time, so we had to re-group again and stop them scoring the equaliser. The most important thing is the hard work and we definitely put a shift in that day.

“We can cause them lots of problems with the position we find ourselves in the table. We just want to keep winning games and it doesn't matter who we are playing against.

“If we can beat Manchester City at their place, there is no reason why we cannot do the same at the Boleyn Ground on Saturday. It will be a good game and hopefully we can get the result that we deserve on Saturday.

“There was definitely belief among the players that we could get the victory. If you look at the quality of players that we have got, we were all on top form that day and having beaten Arsenal and Liverpool, we went there full of confidence that we could get a result.

“We knew it would be a tough task, but we stuck together as a team and made sure that we got the three points that we deserved.”

The on-loan Chelsea forward reminisced on his goal against City in their first meeting.

He added: “I was kind of delighted with that strike! I got the ball from Payet and when I turned, there was nobody around me.

“The next thing on my mind was to have a shot and thankfully the ball went into the corner. That was the first time I had scored past Joe Hart as well.

“You have got to be happy when you score against Manchester City because they are a good team and have world class players. Scoring against them meant a lot to me.”
He went on to comment on the positive feeling in the team.

“The spirit is a lot different. Everyone wants to play for the manager and looking forward to each game," Moses said.

“Everyone wants to express themselves to make sure the manager and fans are happy. It is good to win games and we have definitely showed with our spirit this season that we are prepared to come back in any game and come away with a positive result.”

Ahmed Akaichi

By David Meshioye and Adeboye Amosu in Kigali:
Tunisia are set to unleash their top striker, Ahmed Akaichi, on Nigeria in Friday's African Nations Championship Group C fixture at the Kigali Regional Stadium, reports Comple tesportsnigeria.com.

The big forward scored a brace in the side' s opening fixture against Guinea on Monday.

The North Africans who are still looking for their first win of the competition following the 2-2 draw against the Guineans are banking on Akaichi to help secure victory against the Super Eagles.

"Akaichi is our talisman and we are hoping he will be at his best against Nigeria," Tunisia captain, Ali Maloul, told Comple tesportsnigeria.com. at the side's Lemigo Hotel base here in Kigali.

"It was disappointing that we could not beat Guinea in the the first game, despite dominating the game.

"The story would have been different if we had converted all the chances we created in the game.

"But we believe we can still make it to the next stage especially with Akaichi at his best."

CHAN 2016: Eagles attack…Chikatara to start against Tunisia

By George Aluo
SuperEagles manager, Sunday Oliseh is set to re-jig the teams attack in Friday’s game against Tunisia following the five star performance of Abia Warriors striker, Chisom Chikatara in the Eagles 4-1 demolition of Niger on Monday.

Reliable camp sources told Daily Sunsports exclusively that Oliseh had resolved to start Chikatara ahead of Tunde Adeniji in the match against Tunisia.

According to our source, the coach was more than impressed with the performance of the 21-year old player and had resolved that he can not afford to keep him on the bench in such a crucial match in which the Tunisians would be desperate to take after failing to beat Guinea in their first game.

“Oliseh is aware that Tunisia will fight with the last drop of their blood in that match. After failing to beat Guinea, the north Africans will come all out in that game and Oliseh is not ready to take chances. He feels Chikatara on current form is hot and he would unleash him on the Tunisians right from the very first blast of the referee’s whistle.”

It would be noted that Tunisia was forced to a 2-2 draw by Guinea in the first match of the group.

Meanwhile, Chikatara who emerged the MVP of the Nigeria, Niger game thanks to his hat-trick had vowed to keep firing on all cylinders in the tournament.

In the words of the player: “I’m happy with my performance in the game against Niger, most importantly the goals…Now, we focus on the next game against Tunisia and hopefully, I will get to add to my tally.”

The game against Tunisia would be played at the Kigali Regional Stadium.

West Ham line up bid for Fenerbahce’s international striker
by Eren Sarigul

West Ham United are preparing a January bid for the Nigeria international striker Emmanuel Emenike.

The Hammers are keen to bolster their attacking options over the transfer window and are linking up a move for the 28-year-old according to ESPN.

ESPN go onto say that the club’s chairman David Sullivan has confirmed that they were hoping to sign a new striker on loan and that Emenike is their main target.

Emenike joined the Dubai-based club Al Ain on loan from Fenerbahce, but has now returned to Turkey.

Tottenham were linked with a €10 million move in January for Emenike by the newspaper Metro.

Emenike scored only five goals in 34 league appearances last season in all competitions.

The Nigerian international was booed by his own fans in the recent Istanbul derby against Beşiktaş. Emenike took off his shirt and walked off the field in protest but later returned to the game

Chelsea join transfer race for 13-goal Nigerian striker eyed by Arsenal
by Gary Emmerson

According to reports, Chelsea are keeping tabs on Nigeria international Odion Ighaloand are considering a move for the Watford forward.

However, as per the Mirror, the Blues are considering a summer move, with no word that the Pensioners are planning to bring the hitman to Stamford Bridge during the summer.

The 26-year-old fired the Hornets to the Premier League after an outstanding campaign in the Championship last season, and has taken to the top flight like a duck to water.

The West African has hit 13 goals in 23 appearances so far this term, helping Watford steer clear of relegation and nestle in mid-table—a fine return for the newly promoted side.

Indeed, with 30 goals in 2015, Ighalo has begun to catch the eye of some of the Premier League’s bigger sides. The tabloid identify Chelsea as “one of several clubs” linked with a move for the former Granada man.

The Mirror [as above] note that Atletico Madrid and AS Roma have also been eyeing the forward, while a Mirrorarticle earlier in the month reported that Arsenalhave also been keeping tabs on the attacker, with Arsene Wenger having added the forward to his transfer hit-list.

… Defence line worries Shofoluwe

https://sunnewsonline.com/new/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/Yisa-Sofoluwe.jpg

BY MONICA IHEAKAM
Ex-International, Yisa Shofoluwe has expressed worries over the defence of Super Eagles at the ongoing CHAN 2016 tournament in Rwanda.

Despite the 4-1 victory the Eagles recorded against Niger on Monday, Shofoluwe, said the Eagles defence was porous, a situation he lamented exposed the goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa to the fury of the Nigerien attackers.

The dean of Eagles defense while urging Coach Sunday Oliseh to ensure that the fantastic start to the tournament was not a fluke, saluted the quick reflex of the hat-trick hero, Chisom Chikatara.

“The Eagles have stated their campaign on an impressive note and I am quite delighted with yesterday’s result.

“The attackers had good control of the ball but I am worried about their defense because they failed to fall back on time anytime they move out and at such, they exposed the goalkeeper a lot.

“For the next game against Tunisia, we have to take extra care at the back. The players should endveour to help each other and avoid disagreements that would cause distractions on the pitch.

“The Coach Sunday Oliseh , still has more work to do because having won the first game, it is left for him to convince Nigerians that Monday’s victory was not a fluke.

Super Eagles will lock horns with Tunisia on Friday for their second Group C match at the Stade de Kigali in Kigali.

Oliseh's tactics thrill Nigerians

Sunday Oliseh

By Sam Nnaji
This year's African Championship edition was always going to garner a lot of interest from Nigeria's football community especially among the NPFL's new disciples. Judging from the social media response- that's basically one way to tell nowadays how many people kept an eye on the game from their offices and homes- the game was taken seriously.

More like it's more revered 'brother', the African Nations Cup, this Championship has teeming follower-ship and for the Nigerian Contingent, expectations are to high heavens despite Sunday Oliseh's repeated claims that his is a youthful side, not obsessed with winning the Championship.

Having played their first 90 minutes, the score line birthed the anticipated reaction- exuberant praise for Oliseh and the lads. The gaffer especially for the way he set up his team and consequent switches when the occasion demanded it. Shooting Stars defender Jamiu Alimi's [below] needless fouls earned him an early booking- the only booking of the game actually but he showed no signs that his jittery was ceasing anytime soon.

Oliseh accomplished more than one with that; avoiding a sending off and bringing on a calmer and more assured Central defender.

Whether being jittery or a calming influence both have a way of seeping through a team especially in your first appearance in a tournament and a fixture where you are overwhelming favourites.

In the gaffer's choice of starts, that Tunde Adeniji got the nod upfront was anticipated. First of all, he is inarguably Oliseh's favorite in the position.Remember he started in both legs of the qualifiers. As a player in the League, the Sunshine Stars hit-man has shown steady and consistent improvement as a striker.

Aside just finishing top marksman second only to Gbolohan Salami last season, he has an impressive annual goals return; 16 in the just ended season, 11 in the previous one and 7 in the one before.

Despite not being on the score-sheet against Niger, he clearly looked lively. Perhaps his positioning needs some working on but his all round contribution has to be applauded.

Ikechukwu Ibenegbu's inclusion both as a late addition to the squad and in the starting XI ahead of Bature Yaro and Usman Mohammed stems surely from his heroics late last season with League runners up Warri Wolves.

Despite his age, 'mosquito' as he dubbed remains one of the best and indeed better experienced central midfielders in the League.

His passing on the day however was below par especially in the first period and generally he failed to impose himself In the game as much as we know he is capable of.

Subbed for Usman Mohammed late in the game, he could get another start in game against Tunisia but he owes his manager a much improved display.

But the master stroke in Oliseh's choices was withdrawing Tunde Adeniji for hat-trick hero Chisom Chikatara. The timing of the substitution couldn't have been any better- shortly after he provided an assist for the opener.

A more pragmatic approach could have been to let things stay as they were having gotten your nose in front while anticipating a reaction from the opposition.

But he rightly judged that Chikatara's searing pace would hurt a team surging forward for an equalizer and desperate to avoid a defeat in their opening game. Whilst some argue that Chikatara should get a start in Friday's showdown with the Tunisians, it surely is going to be a different set-up against the North Africans.

Oliseh and his lads have passed the foremost test with distinction but make no mistakes about it, this opponent is the weakest of the trio the Eagles will be faced with in the Group stages. Sterner tests lie ahead but this tournament and this crop of NPFL stars present Sunday Oliseh his easiest shot at a foremost trophy as coach of the Super Eagles.

Niger eye Guinea's scalp

Niger will look to avoid their second consecutive 2016 African Championship Nations (CHAN) Group C defeat when they clash with Guinea at the Stade Regional Nyamirambo in Kigali on Friday.
Kick-off is 18h00 (CAT).

The Menas were hammered 4-1 by the Super Eagles of Nigeria in their opening Group C game at the Stade Regional Nyamirambo on Monday afternoon.

Zakari Adebayor Victorien Adje pulled one back for Niger in the 80th minute. However, Nigeria scored twice in the remaining minutes to seal a 4-1 win.

Niger head coach Francois Zahoui is wary of facing another West African side Guinea, but he is hopeful of making amends against them.

"We want to try and make amends in our next game, but let's remember that Guinea are a very aggressive team," Zahoui said.

"But we will learn from our mistakes against Nigeria and try to give our best performance as it is a tournament not a league," he concluded.

Meanwhile, Guinea will also be eyeing their first 2016 CHAN Group C victory when they lock horns with Niger on Friday.

Sly Nationale came back to hold Tunisia to a 2-2 stalemate in their opening Group C game at the Stade Regional Nyamirambo in Kigali on Monday.

Alseny Camara Agogo was in his element on the day grabbing a brace for Sly Nationale to ensure that the game ended in a draw.

Guinea head coach Mohamed Kanfory Bangoura has warned that they will be going all out for maximum points when they clash with the Menas.

"We are going to give our best for the next match against Niger. We have to correct our mistakes and win the next match," Bangoura said.

Niger need a victory to move away from the bottom of Group C, while Guinea will edge closer to qualifying to the knockout stages if they win.

Okoro, Prince Aggreh ahead 'Hazard' Bassey at CHAN

by Samm Audu
CHAN Eagles wide midfielders Osas Okoro and Prince Aggreh are ahead in the pecking order of Ezekiel Bassey, who has been nicknamed ‘Hazard’ by Enyimba fans after the Chelsea star.

“Bassey is highly thought of by the coach (Sunday Oliseh), but he did not pull his weight during training camp in South Africa,” an official revealed.

“Osas Okoro and Prince (Aggreh) are currently ahead of Bassey as the wide midfielders in the team's 4-2-3-1 formation.

“But the team believe that when he gets his chance at the CHAN, he will explode.”
Bassey has been tipped as one of the stars to watch at the 2016 CHAN in Rwanda after his dazzling footwork helped Enyimba to a seventh league crown in November.

The former Akwa United star was also capped by the main Super Eagles, making an instant impact on his debut when he caused a foul from which Nigeria scored a second goal against Swaziland in a 2018 World Cup qualifier last year.

Bassey’s No.1 fan is his mother, a school principal in Akwa Ibom State who personally travels to watch her son in action for Enyimba.

She will again be rooting for her boy to bounce back and shine in Rwanda and thereafter.

McKinstry targets Group A top spot

by Andrew Oryada
Youthful Rwanda head coach, Johnathan McKinstry, has said their target is to lead Group A in the on-going 2016 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN).

The hosts Rwanda became the first team to qualify for the quarter finals when they picked their second win in the competition on Wednesday. After stopping Ivory Coast 1-0 in the opening game, the Amavubi defeated Gabon 2-1.

But the 30-year old coach told AfricanFootball.com that qualifying for the last eight is not enough, but their target is to lead the group.

“It is good to keep the winning momentum and win the last group game against Morocco. It would also be nice to play our quarter final game at the Amahoro Stadium where we have played all our group matches,” added the Northern Ireland born coach.

Against a 10-man Gabon side Ernest Sugira netted a brace for Amavubi, while Aaaron Salem Boupendza pulled one back for the Gabon team.

Speaking about the performance of his team against Gabon, McKinstry said his boys had the right attitude for the match because they knew what was at stake.

“I told them to go all out and get that important win instead of playing the last group game to determine our destiny,” he explained.

McKinstry who also led Rwanda to second place finish in the 2015 regional Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup said that they are going to continue working hard as the tournament continues. “We are working hard to make the people of Rwanda happy and we really appreciate their support,” he added.
