My brother battled with OCD and Depression too

I remember when it started. He called us and was crying that he cant write his 300 lvl exam
my dad was shouting and all that that strict fathers do. He would have committed suicide if my mother(who is an academic) didnt notice the signs and calm him down. then she rushed to abuja to find out the full extent, he had to be rushed home and to a doctor who put him on anti-depressants. he is doing well now tho.

An advice to parents, talk to your children, shouting wont do any good.

naijainstinct:
1. Anyone can suffer depression.

2. Not only drug abuse, but sleeplessness, over anxiety, frustration and depression can lead to mental illness.

3. We must learn to pay attention and make efforts to remedy the situation when we observe strange changes in our loved ones i.e seclusion & withdrawal from social activities or people, quick anger at the slightest irritation, depression etc

4. People use different things, methods or avenues to hide their depression e.g religiousity, food, alcohol, sex, drugs, seclusion, withdrawal from social circles etc

5. No matter how difficult, stressful or shameful it may seem, depressed or mentally insane people need more love and care (more than ever) from their loved ones. It could be all they need to overcome the depression.

6. It is not until one is mentally ill or insane before they should go and see a psychiatrist. If you notice any form of depression, sleeplessness, fear, over anxiety, wanting to be secluded or sudden withdrawal from social circles, unexplainable and incessant mood swings, anger at the slightest irritation, mental stress from work, family, finances etc, please see a psychiatrist.

6. God heals and heals totally. Just trust in Him.

7. In every situation, we must learn to give thanks to God. It could have been worse than this. What if my sister had stabbed herself or her daughter with the knife? Or gotten electrocuted while trying to forcefully pull out the wall lamp? Or even tried to light up the gas cooker? There is always a reason to thank God......just look closer!

8. No matter how terrible that situation may seem, it won't last for long. It will pass. This time last year, I wouldn't have believed that my sister will be very normal and even working.

9. Nothing is worth the stress. If you die from stressing yourself while trying to get something, you still won't get it. So why the stress? Everything has got its own time & season, what is yours will surely come to you at the right time without too much stress. I later got to find out (from interaction) that being a single mum at 27+ was what was eating my sister up and also joblessness/idleness (she was idle for a year after youth service). Whereas, I have seen women who are single at 40 and are still happy and hopeful.

Sometimes, when I look back at some of those events, I just laugh. Especially when we went to the police station for an extract to enable us apply for a replacement of some of her credentials. Instead of telling them that the credentials got missing, I told them the whole truth. They showed us pepper and extorted money from us. They mocked us at the station and marveled at the possibility of anyone burning their own academic credentials with a sane mind. They even asked us to bring pictures of the burnt ashes. No be small wahala ooo, but at the end, God took the glory. Thanks for your time.
@Lalasticlala, kindly help in sharing my testimony.

I have read through the comments on this thread and I really appreciate your contributions. However, it is important that I address some of the points/questions raised. I laugh at the so-called atheists because I was once like them, non-challant about God. I never believed wickedness, evil spirits or witches existed. I felt every miracle was a function of science or by sheer providence. Today, I know better.
@frank317 said I should see a psychiatrist cos he thinks I also have mental issues for attributing all the glory to God. LOL

1. If the health workers deserve the ULTIMATE GLORY, why then do hospitals write clearly on their walls "We Care but God Heals"? Are we more knowledgable than the doctors themselves?

2. Just like @clitah has asked, if we do not give God the glory for my sister's healing, who gets the glory for the multinational job? This is a job that many "sane" people are desperately searching for, yet God gave her on a platter of gold.

3. Read junior66 comment below:

junior66: my elder sister has this same problem. as i type ryt now ours doors are all locked. hers began in december 2013 and has really never gone. pls pray for us too. i rejoyce with you and ur family.
They have been battling with this issue since 2013 yet no much improvement have been recorded. Is my sister better than his? Or are the drugs they administered to my sister more effective than those administered to his sister?
It is God that gives total healing and He will surely grant @junior66 sister her perfect healing in Jesus Name.

4. I refered to insanity as a spirit not because of my knowledge but because of the understanding of what it truly is. If you take time to read my first thread on this same issue, you MAY understand where I am coming from. @Seangy4kongi had a similar personal experience and can relate perfectly with what I am saying.

5. Why didn't my Sister stab herself or her daughter? or set the house ablaze? or enter my mum's room and attack her? Afterall, she wasn't in her right senses and could have done anything. Yet, you folks say I shouldn't give God all the Glory? The bible says in Psalm 60:11 ".........for vain is the help of a man"

6. During our visits to the psychiatrist, I saw many beautiful, handsome and promising young men and women whose insanity was very violent. They had to be chained, they didn't recognize anyone and some of them have been there for years. My sister was never chained, never forced to the psychiatric hospital, she didn't have to stay for weeks in the hospital.........yet you're wondering why I give God all the glory? I have no regrets......Na God do am

Shalom!

Anybody can care, so any doctor who says he can only care should have his medical license revoked. Medical experts are supposed to provide solutions to medical problems, not just care for people.

Op, after having read your previous post, I want to say somethings which might not make sense to you or some people but will make sense to people who understand spiritual things...

You should know that:
**everyone on earth is different from each other.

**some people will do somethings and will do it easily and some will do de same thing and then get trapped.

**all fingers are not equal.

From what I read in your previous post, you said your sister was quite promiscuous before she became born again. What if while living such promiscuous life an "evil spirit" entered her. You said when she got born again, the illness started. Remember in the Bible when Jesus chased out the spirit of insanity out from a mad man into de swine and de man later began to preach the gospel. Light and darkness cannot stay in de same place and once darkness is going out, it will go out with force...the drug was for her body, but de prayer was for her spirit and soul...thank God for her healing

Truth is:

No one's beefing God.. Buh the way we all attribute things to Spiritual forces is quite alarming... Your Topic is Misleading tho... Your Mom Prayed, Pastors Prayed too, buh what woulda been the effect of all those prayers if she had not been taken to a Hospital for intense Psychiatric Treatment??

I aint saying we shouldnt acknowledge God, buh we should strive to get rid of Absurd Beliefs.. Insanity now has a Spirit right?? Its weird hearing this in the 21st Century..

Am Happy she's back to normal tho..

Cheers..
No. Truth is all those commenting against giving thanks to God are atheists.
Whats wrong in thanking God for the life of someone.
Of course God used docs to save her life. Mistake people make nowadays is to think that pastors are only the ones called by God. Not knowing that God can call you into any profession.
The atheists need people not to believe in God with them and thats exactly whats going on here.

OP, make sure ur sister continues wt her medication if shes still on them and stop all this rubbish about 'spirits'. If she stops her medication or hospital appointments, the depression can get worse and she might be worse than when she had the first major episode.
I hope you would be wise enough to put aside religion and do the right thing.

Fact:
1. Drugs science and medical research seem reliable. Why doesn't God seem reliable?
2. Calling someone or something your God is a contract. It means certain responsibilities are automatically assigned to both parties. It seems to me that Nigerians in general don't have or know any expectations of their God. If I have a God I expect and understand that certain things are expected of me from him and him from me.
3. I note that clearly very few people take the time to examine and critically question their beliefs. When you know you have a short time on this earth and your beliefs will certainly influence what story your life will take. will you not want to be certain that you are on the right way?

I have made the following decisions with respect my life.
1. That I am 100% responsible for the course of my life. No 3rd party opinion, belief nor story will make me give over my responsibility/life to any ideal belief or person
2. I will not blindly follow anyone or any God
3. If God wants me as his servant/worshipper. It's his responsibility to prove himself to be God and not mine.
4. I will not ascribe to God what clearly was achieved by another.
5.if any being or power is capable of a miracle he or she is capable of letting people know he is responsible for his act Without the help of others

Op, we thank God your sister is better. However, please encourage your sister to always go for her appointment and to be adherent to her drugs. She shld also reduce stressors. Having gone through your previous post, i'm afraid her illness started a long time and had nothing to do with her church/born againism. The promiscuous life and even over religiosity are all signs of psychiatric illness. The relapse rate of mental illness is high when patients are non adherent to their drugs. Many stop taking their drugs under the guise that they feel ok, that God has healed them and next they relapse. Most psychiatric illnesses have to be managed a long time if not life long. I'm not saying God doesn't heal, far from it but i just want to give you the facts. God be with your family

Wow.. I'm so happy reading this testimony today. In fact, this already made my week special. My brother, God did it all and I pray that this testimony shall be permanent in Jesus name; your sister will look back and laugh out hard @ the devil.
You already turn to pastor within a year Bro.

I cannot but re-echo this part of your advice to everybody
(b)Nothing is worth the stress. If you die from stressing
yourself while trying to get something, you still won't get it.
So why the stress? Everything has got its own time &
season, what is yours will surely come to you at the right
time without too much stress. (/b)
Guys, there are two thing you shouldn't worry about in this life
1. What you can't change: if you can't change it, pray it unto God and leave it there... Don't ever trouble your mind over it cause worry/depression/restlessness won't ever make any positive difference but rather will leave it's negative scares.
If you are short, celebrate it because you can't change it and your height is never a function of who you are.
You don't have a job yet after you've done all you need to do, worry won't help the situation but your postive/optimistic attitude can go a long way.
Your parent aren't Dangote: that's a fixed deposit.... And that won't change even if you kill yourself over it. Your present state should be a blessing/an advantage not a curse, stop the worry and let God care for you.. "cast your anxiety on Him because He cares for you"_1 Peter 5:7.

2. What you can change; if you can change it, go ahead and make the necessary change instead of wasting time in sleepless nights.
" be very careful, then, how you live_not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity....... " eph.. 5;15.

If you can avoid troubles your mind over the above two things, then you'll well and merrily without care for the rest of you life.
My man, how have you been? I don turn pastor ooo grin Thanks for everything......God bless you. I'll PM you
