A new study published in the science journal,PLOS ONE, says that birds slur their speech when they’re drunk. [color=#990000]Researchers in Oregon got several lab zebra finches hammered and analyzed their bird songs to learn more about alcohol-induced speech impairment. The scientists quickly found that drunk birds slur their speech in the same way that humans do after too much drinking. To conduct the study, researchers of the Oregon Health and Science University got a sample of birds drunk by adding several drops of alcohol to their daily intake of juice (about 6 percent). When blood tests were taken to ensure that the birds were actually drunk, the scientists found out that their blood alcohol level (B.A.C.) was concurrent with a risky level of B.A.C. in humans. (Most of the birds hit about 50 to 80 mg/dl, though one birds approached greater than 80 mg/dl – that same amount in humans would test positive for an operating while intoxicated violation. The choice to use zebra finches was quite specific. According to scientists, zebra finches learn to speak – or sing/chirp – the same way that humans do. Many brain areas used in these birds used for singing and chirping are similar to the human brain areas used for speech. The researchers say that birdsong and the speech of humans is caused by the same set of genes. Christopher Olson, the author of the drunk bird study, said that he was initially surprised that the zebra finches would even drink the alcohol. “At first we were thinking that they wouldn’t drink on their own because, you know, a lot of animals just won’t touch the stuff. But they seem to tolerate it pretty well and be somewhat willing to consume it.” 1 Share

So, what happened after the birds got drunk? The scientists noticed that their songs and chirps (i.e. their speech) got quieter (lost amplitude) and acquired an increased entropy – which simply means that their speech got more chaotic. The scientists conducting the research also found that not all the syllables of the bird speech got slurred – only specific ones. This, in turn, means that alcohol effects on birds and humans are not uniform – e.g., only specific parts of the brain are affected. As a result of this study, the scientists at the Oregon Health and Science University determined that consuming alcohol doesn’t alter overall “peripheral motor function” in humans.
