You have set religious faiths as one standard for which social media should be regulated, not minding that morality goes beyond religion. How d'you suggest a balance be created, to placate the non-religious that are morally up to par?

With due respect Ma, I didn't single out religious perspective as the only institution that frowns solidly at immorality of social media. However, if I understand your question, religion or no religion. What is good is obviously good and what is bad is obviously bad. To bring peace to the religious and non religious ideologies, regulating social media is the way out.
Hopefully, that answer your question Ma?

@Toursaw...social media has gone a long way helping effective Communications in our country No doubts, but my question is how do we strike a balance between polluting, missusing the social media and making it a source of growth, good morals, conducive platform for decent nigerians?
Re: NAIRALAND Interschool debate third edition winner 3: UNILORIN by DesChyko: 8:29pm On Jan 30, 2016
Mustybura, indeed you have a very strong argument.
However, I seek clarification in one aspect. I assume 'sex-related' contents is one of the evils you'ld rather have off the internet.
I know some people better their sex lives off the internet by patronizing these explicit contents online since it's quite an off-limit topic in real life. That is besides body anatomy which is educational, but detrimental to kids. Another angle is the choices of certain people (minority) which are being more easily expressed and shared online. Are you implying that these aren't important reasons enough to let them exist?

Tourshaw and Mustybura,
No doubt, freedom of expression via social media has been abused. Don't you think regulating social media will also be abused by the regulators by restricting needed information to the masses, especially corrupt practices from politicians?

Good Question. It's glaring that the nemesis social media caused is injurious not only to the citizens but also to Nigeria as a whole. I am not necessarily calling for the halt of social media either. My stand is

It should be regulated in a way that every website uses by the internet users is not adult containing one.

There should be absolute ban of all pornographic websites or it's derivatives

Anyone that threatens national peace by a post should be traced and arrested.

Any topic that can cause religion blasphemy should be disallowed
and a host of others

Hope that answer your question Sir?

well, what I mean is to regulate and not to do away with it totally.contents should be regulated based on age category.

As expected Sir. The main purpose of regulating is our focus. It will also carry little demerit points like the one you just mentioned. But is that truly a factor to be considered? Emphatic no! Government has its means of dealing with corrupt practices. Needless to say, EFCC, ICPC, and a host of others who are doing their work diligently and conscientiously. So what is not our businesses. We need not wash our dirty linen outside by using social media to tell the world how our country leaders are corrupt. Do we?

@xener, men and women of proven integrity would be the supposed regulators.Anyway ,if there is still uncensored material,or if it is found that others right are not reflected on the social media, a separate body that looks into such matters should be set up.

My question is to tours haw.
Assume a body is being setup to regulate the social media crises, having known that we have several hackers in the country who can actually pollute an innocent website(s) and can lead to so many atrocities and such likes. What solution would you prefer to this? Regulate hackers?

Regulate hackers? That's obviously impossible. Though hackers can't be regulated together with the social media but the their actions can be put to an infinitesimal level. When a website for instance is regulated, hardly will you perceive the website is hacked. Epitome of that is university websites like Unilorin.edu.ng, I have never for once heard of a case of the site hacked. Meaning hackers are usually render ineffective when social media is regulated.

Satisfied?

I support the registration, but the Senate should not be allowed to abuse this.

The body where all bloggers registered with should be able to come in and track all immorality even before posting thus could be via creating a software (application) of which all information to upload on SOSO media will have to pass through screen before dissemination, here in Nigeria we have a body regulating that already I guess. This will as fast as anything done on the Internet because there are applications which can take care of this already left to the authorities to act to its effects.

In fact Nigeria government can as well regulate kind of websites Nigerians will be visited and type of information there present, this has been done in Japan years a go and it works perfectly for them. China once stop Chinesefrom log in to Google, if this is possible we can do that here in Nigeria.

Irrespective of moral concept of the individual to me immorality got no other name and always treated the same every where. A free thinker strike balance in relating to other fellow human being, so nothing bad in setting standard for SOSO media in Nigeria.

Mustybura, don't you think the regulation will be misused by whatever government in power? I mean censoring thierown misdeeds and leaving that of their opponents bare?

Exactly what we are saying. That one too is part of regulation and censorship strategy

@kingtom, There exist a tripartite power in every government ,the executive ,the legislator and the judiciary. They are there to check excesses of one another, thus if a government kotow s to it own rhythm, then the court are there to reverse such actions or inactions.

If I may ask why compare Nigeria to countries such as Syria and North Korea as examples of regulating Social Media?

You used religion as one of the reasons for regulating Social Media. What do you say about non-religious and free thinkers who also use Social media? The constitution is secular, how do you merge that? Thanks.

Hi snoopy. It's been ages smiley

My observation is the debaters seem to have completely intertwined the internet as a whole, and social media. Note that the theme of the debate is the regulation of SOCIAL MEDIA, not internet usage in general.

Tourshaw, your closing points caught my attention, but the one I need clarification on is "the war on insurgency in Nigeria will be won".

Please clarify.
