24 Things Worth Knowing About NHIS by Hubtain(op): 9:36am On Jan 31, 2016
National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) was
setup to serve as a leveling ground for Nigerians... Prior to the establishment of NHIS, quality healthcare was a luxury to an ordinary person.

Majority of the objectives of NHIS point to the fact that it was established for an ordinary person's benefit. Unfortunately, these ordinary people are not really enjoying the scheme as they should...

Having worked in a NHIS accredited hospital, I can confidently say ignorance is the main thing that's keeping people from maximizing their premium under NHIS. Most hospital know this and are taking advantage of this side of you...

As a NHIS enrollee, you ought to be given the
best healthcare services anytime you visit your
healthcare provider...

See, you can enlist yourself in the VIP register of
your healthcare provider by acquainting yourself
with this crucial information about NHIS and with
this- you'll suffer little or no discrimination henceforth.

1. NHIS was established to make quality healthcare
affordable and accessible to all Nigerians. As a
Nigerian and a registered NHIS enrollee, you have
the backing of the government (via the
Constitution) to enjoy quality healthcare at a
cheaper cost.

2. You can sue NHIS for not making its promises
good and for any damage sustained due to
negligence... And NHIS can also sue you as it
deem fit.

3. NHIS place higher priority on its customers (you).
This alone should be enough to boost your confidence and trust in the scheme. Anytime your complaint gets to NHIS, her judgement is always in favour of the enrollee involved.

4. NHIS has plenty hospitals (both private and
government owned) on its list that any registered
enrollee can choose from.

5. If you are dissatisfied with your chosen hospital's
services, you can apply for a change of hospital
after three (3) months of initial access to care but it may take up to about six (6) months to be effected.

8. NHIS pay capitation (upfront payment) on behalf of its registered enrollee to their respective HMOs.

9. NHIS has at least one office in every state in
Nigeria.

10. NHIS always publish capitation payment notice for each quarter on its website homepage... So, when next your hospital try to deny you access to health care services due to "no capitation" payment, quickly run a check on NHIS website to know who to blame...

11. You're to make a co-payment of 10% for drugs (that is, tablets, injections and infusions) to a hospital with NHIS approved pharmacy at point of drugs collection. You're not paying for any other service...

12. NHIS doesn't cover for any kind of family planning device, you're only covered for counseling.

13. As a student under NHIS, Tertiary Institutions
Social Health Insurance Programme (TISHIP) covers you when pregnant in school for about 2
live births.

14. Every NHIS accredited hospital is under an oath to "accept every active NHIS enrollee without discrimination. An accredited hospital cannot reject a patient except on appeal to NHIS stating the grounds for rejection."

Seriously it does... I mean it covers secondary care. Most times people get inferior treatment from hospitals because they have very shallow idea of the ideal scope of coverage and enrollee's rights and privileges. See, these hospitals will respect and treat you right if you know what you're entitled to and how to get it...
