Do you know about the CBN's policy promotion of fixed exchange rate, and politics of currency devaluation?

Abeg swerve one side if you don't know what's happening in your country.

Big laugh out loud.

So fixed exchange rate is The economic policy ?

Anyone with an elementary knowledge of economics will dismiss all this nonsense talk of to devalue or not to devalue.
The currency is already devalued by simple market forces.
Maintaining a phony official rate is the silliest thing any government can do.

Insisting, against market forces, to keep the phoney official rate at $199 shows the very narrow grasp of economics that the present leadership has.

Nigerians are very impatient, forgetful and shortsighted.
We all want change and are not prepared to make sacrifices and undergo the pains that accompany the change.

But I believe with the present economic policies, even though harsh, Nigeria will in the long run become self reliant. Only then can we begin to feel the CHANGE.

Indeed. That is why it is frustrating talking to Nigerians about politics or the economy. The myopia and ethnocentric viewpoint of many Nigerians, which makes them fail to see or deliberately misinterpret what is obvious, is annoying.

I gave an example on another thread of how some Nigerians are acting like a little child who is demanding a bicycle from his dad yet will not accept that Daddy simply does not have the money in his pocket to purchase the bicycle with. The simple fact some Nigerians are blatantly refusing to accept , like a brat-like child, is that we do not have the reality or economic strength, courtesy of being a mono-economy with a moribund SME sector and prehistoric infrastructure et al, to recover quickly from this crash in oil price matched with the monumental corruption GEJ and co have bankrupted Nigeria with. Nigerians should grow up, face reality, support a well-intentioned and focused government and , crucially, stop childishly and unreasonably demanding water from a stone.

Buhari should man up and devalue our currency like Ibb did to save the free fall of the naira.
Even if naira is officially devalued to 400 today, and our only source of foreign currency keeps on falling, the gap between official and black market will widen again. It is a matter of demand and supply.

Buharinomics is Working

I can see why former President Jonathan could oversee the most odious looting of the treasury with the way Nigerians are reacting to the current state of the economy. The Buhari government has made it clear that it is determined to wean us off importation and what this means for a country that imports virtually everything from eggs to toothpicks is that people will feel the pain initially.

However, the Buhari government's economic policy of stifling frivolous imports and not officially sanctioning the devaluation of the naira is working as the manufacturing industry is beginning to grow. There is evidence for this assertion here http://communityvoiceradio.com/chinese-auto-firm-to-set-up-assembly-plant-in-calabar/ and http://nairametrics.com/bua-group-and-this-chinese-company-will-build-a-1-9b-steel-plant-in-nigeria

The same with agriculture https://www.nairaland.com/2904854/anambra-begins-vegetable-export-uk
and http://www.punchng.com/ooni-promises-jobs-for-40000-youths-through-agriculture/.

Yes, there are initial pains but if Nigerians support the government and stop the addiction for imported items, we will be on the way to long-lasting and sustainable economic growth and development.

Despite the problems with the budget which proper scrutiny from the National Assembly can help address, it still has a large focus on infrastructure development that will benefit the economy and citizens in the middle to long term.

Our duty as citizens is to look at ways of helping to make things better as the government fights corruption and implements structural reform of our economy not to whine about not being able to continue our destructive habits of wasteful spending and unnecessary importation for temporary gain.

Bag of trash. Manufacturing industries without steady power supply. If the government is serious about local production, they should fix power first. You will amazed when u get to hear how much the few local producing industries spend on power alone. What then happens to profit?

Isn't the FER an economic policy?

Mr.Adams Smith, Please tell us what makes the FER silly and propose a practical way forward.

FER is not silly.
But having a dual exchange rates where one is fixed and the other open to market forces is the grand folly.

When was the last time you walked into your bank and got the official FER?
The official FER is just an avenue for fraud for banks and their agents. It's robbing the public to pay the banking class.
It makes noooo economic sense.

On the other hand , let the currency float freely would allow it reach it's equilibrium value, it's real value.
This value may be 500 or 1000, and would sure enough create immediate pain for imports.

But our non oil exports would benefit, grow and their successes seep into the economy.
The non oil exports can potentially create 20 to 30 million jobs if the incentives for profit-making are there.

On the medium and long term, it would force us to look inwards and look local for our basic necessities.

Those who can import and those who want to consume foreign made products would go ahead and pay the higher prices.

When oil prices recover, we would have created so many cottage industries that our economy would become less and less dependent on oil and gas.

And let me add another thing.

Forcing Western Union and monygram customers to get their remittances at the official naira rate is another fraud perpetuated on the Nigerian public.

Nigerians in the diaspora remit to $23 billion annually.

If beneficiaries are allowed, as was the previous practice, to receive their funds in dollars or at REAL market equivalents, it would encourage those in the diaspora to remit more dollars, help mitigate the shortages and help keep the pressure off the Naira.

This is one thing the government or CBN should do right away.
