Out of curiousity, since when did the senate have the power to terminate a contract. Correct me if I am wrong but the Senate makes laws and provides oversight, the senate as a body does not award or terminate contracts. I dont even think the senators has the power to award contracts for lightbulb in their own senate. It's the administrative section of the senate (civil servants) that award contracts for running the senate.

Also correct me if I am wrong, senate can "recommend" but cannot "order" the prosecution of anybody

Joe Igbokwe and some reasonable Igbo guys were born here in Lagos and they know what it takes to enjoy peace and development. Do you know where Ben Akabueze is now? His at the top level. Loyalty counts a lot.

Mass migration to the Sw and the internet have opened our eyes to the heart of the Ibos.

what you call reasonable are Igbos who having mixed with others are more cosmopolitan while retaining their roots, they are more tolerant, less abrasive, less suspicious of other tribes because theyve grown up among them mostly in the cosmopolitan South West. They are accepted and hence they are given opportunities to fullfill their talents without fear. The mass migration to Lagos as adults has opened our eyes to the fact that we dont really know the Ibos. Those we grew up with in the SW are different from those ibos who grew up in the east have never really mixed with others tribes and have a parochial, ethnocentric mentality, they are abrasive and dont mix well with other tribes and breed mistrust and division, they are filled with hatred from the war even though any of them werent alive then, they see themselves as Ibos 1st then Nigerians (some see themselves as Biafrans not Nigerians). These ones (many of whom are here on Nairaland) dont mix well and their obvious hatred is now creating a suspicion from the average Southwesterner where previously there was none.

rubbish, we must live by your own doctrines, nonsense.

pray akwa ibom does not get seaport, your pride will diminish with time.

Yorubas are enlightened people, we would rather increase the pie for everybody than try to get a bigger share of the same pie. We are enlightened enough to know that if the whole does well, the parts do well, we don't protect theives, we don't call all our relatives and fill all the govt positions with relatives simply because we got an appointment. Despite the general corruption of values and fall in the fabric and morality of society, we still understand the concept of respect and merit. We like money like everyone else but we dont worship money, you can have all the money you want, in yoruba-land it doesn't substitute for pedigree or a good name. We dont sell kingship to the highest bidder. We are accommodating people, we educate Ibos, the same Ibos that lived in the south west and voted against Awolowo's free education were not discriminated against when he won and introduced free education in the west. We allow Ibos to buy land unfetered in Yoruba land.

We have no problem with Ibos, but we are fast realising that you have a problem with us, we aren't the ones that will lose.

The only agenda we have in youruba land is the progress of all, because unlike others with the I before others (Ibo) mentality, the progress of my neighbour is my progress. the value of my house goes up if the value of my neighbours house goes up. If anambra is doing well, Lagos will do well because your goods will pass through Lagos, your people will buy land in Lagos. If you stop being so myopic, youll realise we are all connected. Even the man in Ghana is connected, if Nigeria does well, Ghana does well.

The Senate has no powers to terminate anything as they didn't have the power to award it in the first place. This is a clear case of legislative rascality. They should make their recommendations to the executive and not make it seem as if they have power to do so. This is how some useless senators will be forming robocop and fighting with their governors.

Like i said, correct me if I wrong, I am not a lawyer but there are 3 tiers of government, the senate has no executive powers, their role is to legislate, not to imterprete the law (judiciary) or the implement or execute policy (the executive). The executive can terminate a contract, the judiciary can deem a contract to be null and void but the senate can only recommend termination.

i suspect this is what happenned and our journalists have used the wrong words (as usual)

ofcourse i may be wrong

The sheer number of funny and shady characters who make it to the parliament shows there is something wrong with all or most of us! These guys ooze out arrogance, impunity and incompetence morning to night!

REMITA is one of Nigeria's great success stories in IT, yet they want to frustrate them because they are totally ignorant of what REMITA is.

The ONLY grounds for Impeachment are those specified within the CONSTITUTION!

Not following a Senate "Recommendation"... is not one of them.

You think they are Ignorant? I bet you are wrong!!

VERY CORRUPT?... Yes! But Ignorant?.. hell No!
They know exactly what REMITA will do to their "business as usual". undecided undecided

Bukola Saraki and his goons are "fighting for survival"!
The only reason they all want to be Senators, in the first place, is because of the level of corruption that goes on in that supposedly hallowed chambers.
It's not like they like to "make laws" ..... or how many have they made since 1999? grin
They killed, lobbied, did rituals with human beings, sold houses, connived and conspired...... just to become Senators.

All of a sudden, we have this Dongo, funky-Old-Mallam called Buhari, insisting that TSA should be implemented at all levels of governance, thereby dealing a death blow to their usual corrupt ways like allocating any amount to themselves, not returning unspent budgeted funds, kick-backs and fronts, e.t.c ......... and you think they will just keep civil and accept it without a dirty fight?

Just wait a few weeks more, the real roforofo fight is just about to start between the Senate and the Presidency/Nigerians.
When they can no longer blackmail him with the Budget-passing, ..and Saraki's CCT trial swings into gear, then you will see that "a dying man, is a dangerous man"!

Corruption will fight back, and very dirty. Even Buhari knows that and has said so.
Whether Nigerians will "recognize it" as what is it, or pretend they dont (as our brothers like to do), is another kettle of fish.

Why is this stupid senate always playing to the gallery? They didnt terminate anything. They don't have the power to. Same way they fooled Nigerians last week that they ordered a suspension of the increase in power tariff. They did not suspend anything as they don't have the power to..
Re: Senate Terminates REMITA Contract And Orders Prosecution Of Culprits by Ndolarr: 11:00pm On Feb 24, 2016
Senate of 'ineffectual buffoons' like Dino Melaye! What do you expect? Passing ineffectual motions and displaying pitiable ignorance publicly! Do they obtain legal advice at all before dancing naked at the market place? It is clear to a year 1 law or political science student that the Senate has no constitutional right to terminate the remita contract!! It is legislative blunder!!! At best, they can advise the CBN to review the contract and possibly terminate it if necessary. The Senate, by its action, gives room for suspicion that Remita promoters refused to 'deal', and so, is getting punished. Dino Melaye is not to be trusted where money is involved. I recall he raised the false alarm on the remita contract!!
Re: Senate Terminates REMITA Contract And Orders Prosecution Of Culprits by DTaj: 11:20pm On Feb 24, 2016
Complete illiteracy is a problem. The Senate (or any legislature worldwide) CANNOT terminate a contract which is the prerogative of the Executive.

It was in the same foolish manner that Dino Melaye (Senate Committee Chairman on FCT) threatened to revoke land allocations in the FCT! Imagine the daftness!

The legislature is an advisory arm of government to the executive with a primary role of law making, and not usurping the functions of the executive!

Too many clowns in the National Assembly...

How does the senate exercise its power/influence as a check on the executive arm's performance?
Thanks.

Remita is owned by Tinubu so there is no way Buhari is going to prosecute the company this is the height of madness what we are witnessing in this apc government it only prosecuting those that belongs to the pdp we are well aware of the fact that the likes' of Tinubu and co are instrumental to the emergence of Buhari so they are untouchable, the corrupt government indeed

do I look like someone you can brainwashhuh

I work with yorubas and I know the deep seated hatred yorubas have for other tribes esp igbos, so don't sprew rubbish propaganda for me.

must all goods coming into Nigeria pass through Lagos?

Why did Fashola allocate 88billion for SW and 2billion for SE?

You brought in political sentiments, I won't even talk about that.

An average yoruba man is intimidated by a success of another tribe.

What happened during elections 2015?

Who said igbos must vote Ambode or die in lagoon?

For your information most yorubas have stopped selling lands to igbos.

Igbo dominated areas are seen as dangerous zones, igbo markets are being destroyed under the guise of development and security, one after the other.

Talking about Ghana, they have banned some Nigerian goods, so Don't think you can brainwash me, I have first hand experience with yorubas.

All you do is use people, pride were full una head no be here, very few yorubas can allow their daughter marry igbo man, #fact.
yorubas position themselves in managerial positions and HR in companies and employ igbos as marketers and sales agent.

I know all your evil strategies, no need to act as though you have good intentions for anyone except yorubas

why did ameachi stop corpers from being posted to oil firms in Rivers state??

The problem is there are many more of you village Ibos than there are enlightened Ibos.

Like I said, A yoruba King will sell you his land with pleasure because he is enlightened enough to know you cant carry the land away with you and you cant overthrow him in his own land, he knows if you invest in his area his people will benefit, small minded Ibos like yourself will not sell your land to anybody but Ibos, so you get no investment, no investment means no jobs, your people suffer, they migrate to other lands and in the process develop other lands and then you shout marginalization.

Like i said carry on with your ignorance, if grandstanding, bragging and the crass I better my neighbor display of sudden wealth counted for anything , you guys wouldn't be where you are with all your enterprise and resourcefullness. Stop think and engage your brains, it's not about who shouts the most, who can abuse the most but actually making progress and I can tell you people like you have harmed the Ibo cause. You are the ones shooting yourselves in the foot. You need friends not enemies.

Myopia, selfishness even among yourselves, small mindedness, and trying to be too clever by halves has been your collective problem right from the inception of this country
