Let's not fool ourselves here, everything the op said is true, nobody chooses poly over a university voluntarily. It's mainly jamb frustration that sends people there. |

Hummmm, anyway,I'm proud to b a poly graduate. Bt I dnt c anything special in uni,I hold HND in mass comm,sm of my frnds dt graduated from uni who read mass comm as well don't knw 50 percent of wht I knw as far as mass comm is concerned. In fact,I ws teaching sm 400L uni students of mass comm last wk,I ws very amazed when they told me they dnt knw what 'page planning' is all abt.Imagine final year student of Journalism! They are students of one of the federal universities. So,wht ar u nw saying! Evn during my nysc,I knw hw mny uni students I assisted in replying their query letter issued to them. |

ibadanfinest:I don't really know if acceptance fee is included. The polytechnic is yearly. Maybe I could buy their utme form. I have it as second choice.... hope there wouldn't be clashes? because if the polytechnic would release their first choice before uniuyo's second choice? |

Who told you that HND holders are the engine room of Nigeria. You must just be waking up from dream world. I attended both University and Polytechnic so i know better. University is far far superior in everything than polytechnic. However, we also have quality student in the polytechnic. DankemzI: |

that you even try to compare POLYs and UNIs in Nigeria shows that you've failed! why not compare yourselves with universities in Egypt, south Africa and co, let alone universities in UK, US and the rest! you're here talking rubbish, comforting yourself on what's not. comparing university and polytechnic is like comparing the male and female child, they're not the same, they play different roles but yet, are both critical! |

I actually do not understand this issue of practicals and theories. The Certificate under consideration is not comparable, and as such need no argument. No sane university graduate will have time to argue this rubbish, you will always see the HND graduate coming to prove themselves which doesn't make them equal to degree. I don't have time and as such let me read and laugh at HND students. The truth remains that degree is better than HND. HND students does no practical than degree students. Not at all. I have friends in HND and I can tell you that degree is far better than HND. When I was in second year, I went to two polytechnics(names withheld) to educate them and I was shocked that ND II and HND I students could not say the reasons why what they believe is valid. All I see are students who go to assemble things and say they do practicals. |

mjbaba:The emboldened also disgusts and gets me worried when I see polytechnic graduates who can't write coherently in English. Well, in as much as some polytechnic students can't stand their ground, some university students on the other also can't stand their stand their ground.. Just that people tend to fault polytechnic students unjustly |

teawhy2788:You are talking about few among many. in physics, EXPECTATION VALUE must be taken from large number of people. We are talking about an average view. University students are far better than you. It's not comparable. How many PHD lecturers taught you? what about professors and MSC. As a HND holder, you will never lecture even first years in the university even if you get your MSC and PhD, please make your enquiries. |

mrphysics:I'm inclined to agree with you that these two certificates are incomparable. This is because they were established to serve different purposes. While universities specifically focus on theories, polytechnics on the other hand specifically focus more on practicals. If you may ask me, these two should be dependent on each other to maximize productivity just that the nonchallant attitude of the act of parliament that set up polytechnic education to properly fund our polytechnics and upgrade the syllabus in such a way that it will achieve the purpose for which it was created has been causing discrepancy |

God bless you for this post of yours. Silly Article. Which University did Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, John Obi Mikel, David Becham, Jay Jay Okocha attend? These guys are miles ahead of the OP in every sphere of life. I Studied Electrical Engineering from Yabatech and I never regretted going there. After spending the 5 years in Uni, you get a 100K per month job and some Poly graduates in Telecoms/IT earn over 800K per month cause of their expertise. Omotola Jalade graduated from Yabatech. Whether it is a Poly or Uni it doesn't define you. A myopic reasoning indeed. We all have our relevance in the society. tosyne2much: |

The OP nailed it with the 3rd reason. FUNDING!!! I DON'T KNOW WHY THIS HND/BSC THING HAS BEEN CAUSING A LOT OF CONTROVERSIES FOR SO LONG! THE PROBLEM IS JUST FUNDING FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE GOVERNMENT NEGLECTED THE POLYTECHNIC SYSTEM! JUST LIKE THEY PLACED MORE PRIORITY ON OIL THAN AGRICULTURE! WHO SHOULD BE BLAMED FOR THAT ![]() That's Nigeria for you! We all know that! I bagged my ND at Ado, before obtaining D.E to OAU. If you haven't been there you might not really get it. Both institutions are unique in their own way. |
| Re: 9 Reasons Why Nigerian Universities Are Better Than Polytechnics by Nobody: 11:56am On Feb 25, 2016 |
@op I got into polytechnic because I couldn't get admission into a university of my choice. I got one of the highest jamb and post jamb scores, had my W.A.S.S.C.E with distinctions and nothing like D. My result was too excellent YET I couldn't get admission into the university of my choice because school Na MAN-KNOW-MAN. I vowed not to write jamb again and along the line, I got admission into polytechnic and I vowed to remain there. Got into poly, met people with same good result and were quite young as I was then (I'm a graduate now and doing better than a lot of uni guys ). Reasons for coming Into poly seemed same. So @op you are so wrong when you say people who are unintelligent opt for polytechnics. That was before before not nowadays o. And I'm telling you, people who got admission into that uni were people who had Cs and D's (D's and even Fs in maths and English) Forget that thing jare, Nigerian universities are operating on PAST GLORY |

I graduated from a polytechnic, and i can tell you that the OP is right in most points raised. There are however a few advantage the polytechnic have over the university but in general i would advise who cares, to attend a University ( if you are in Nigeria). I never wanted to go to a Polytechnic, but circumstance led me to it, while i was there i was still writing JAMB, and all my paper was seized. but I eventually graduated with a Distinction, Top of my class, and have a very good job most university graduate can only dream of, but i must tell you i suffered lots of discrimination before i got the job, i was denied scholarships and several Government schemes as i speak i still wish i went to a University even though i am happy in my job. I am valued because here they care about delivery ( men everyone here knows i am good) than qualifications, and I even supervise and coach university graduates because many of them are so shallow in their knowledge. My final thoughts 1. where ever you are, study to know and not to pass exams 2. know your onus and always read to upgrade 3. learn things outside your field, have a knowledge about almost everything. 4. be proud of who you are and where you studied 5. If you went to a polytechnic, try furthering ( i have not though) take professional exams, attend training and get certifications. 5. above all, trust in God. only God can help you achieve your dreams. |

I went to Yabatech and we have several PhD holders as lecturers, Dunno about other polytechnics..... How did you come about the quality or intelligence of students/graduate... Anyone can be regardless of the institution.. Afterall some ppl cram to get their first class. About confidence... It has to do with one's personality |

tosyne2much:Nice one sir. During the last convocation ceremony of the University of Nigeria Nsukka, a convocation debate was organised with the topic: UNIVERSITY EDUCATION SHOULD BE RESEARCH ORIENTED THAN SKILL BASED. After every argument, it was justified with reasons that University education should be research oriented. Mr tosyne2much, What actually is practical is not skills, it is research. if you tell me that poly does more research (practical ) than university, sir I will disagree with you. I have been privileged to teach these polytechnic students, sir, all they do is buy handouts and pass. Understanding what is been taught isn't they. In my school, UNN (Physics and Astronomy ), We do not say that your name is tosyne2much, rather we know, with reasons it is so. that is comprehension. |
