The Arsenal midfielder has urged supporters to rally round the Super Eagles when they face the Pharaohs in two crucial Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers later this month

Arsenal’s Alex Iwobi has asked Nigeria fans to remain hopeful and continue to show their love for the Super Eagles ahead of this month’s crucial pair of Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Egypt.

The Eagles trail the Pharaohs by two points in Group G and need at least four points over two legs to ensure they keep alive their hopes of reaching Gabon 2017.

The fast emerging Arsenal star expressed his happiness at making interim coach Samson Siasia’s squad.

"I call on all Nigerians to rally round the Super Eagles in the two crucial matches against Egypt. I am aware that historically matches between Egypt and Nigeria are very competitive, however, with the calibre of players both home and abroad I am confident we shall triumph against a very difficult opponent,” Iwobi told Goal.

“I feel honoured each time I wear the green and white colours of Nigeria and I am grateful for the opportunity to represent the country of my birth. I pledge to do my best to make a valuable contribution to the Super Eagles.”

Alex is making remarkable progress at Arsenal this season and is working hard to secure a regular place in the first team.

Since switching allegiance from England, the 19-year-old has represented Nigeria in two friendly matches against Cameroon and DR Congo and is looking forward to his first appearance in a competitive match.

He was also called up to the Nigeria U23 side that will play Brazil U23 in a friendly match on March 24.

However, it is understood that the midfielder will settle for the senior team due to the more crucial nature of the encounter against Egypt.

Footballers Onazi and Troost-Ekong talk about their favourite books on World Book Day

To celebrate this year’s World Book Day, Goal asked two Nigerian stars about their reading routine and they gladly obliged with interesting answers
GOAL EXTRA TIME

One of the most popular quotes about books is credited to Mark Twain. It goes thus: “A man who does not read has no advantage over a man that cannot read.”

In a time where many young people are caught in the thrall of social media, many often forget that the greatest knowledge comes from reading great books.

How important is it to read books? Two of Nigeria’s most promising young footballers tell us about the importance of reading.

Lazio’s Ogenyi Onazi and William Troost-Ekong of Haugesund are footballers who attest to the impact of books in their lives. They say that reading makes leaders, both men exert influence in their teams – Onazi is the deputy captain of the Super Eagles while William was recently named captain of his Norwegian club at just 22.

For aspiring young footballers reading is very important, as Onazi says: “As a footballer, how do you sign a contract when you can't read its content?”

Goal asked them questions about their favourite books and we publish their responses to mark World Book Day.
OGENYI ONAZI - MIDFIELDER AT LAZIO, ITALY

What book(s) are you reading at the moment?

Presently, none. Although I've got some books lined up. I plan to read about the King of Dubai, Al Makhtoum.

What book has made the most impact in your life?

Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki

Which do you prefer, fiction or auto/biography?

Autobiography
https://static.goal.com/di/4E572EBC44686E9B693E323BD8431DE2.jpg
Who is your favourite author?

Robert Kiyosaki

Who is your favourite character from a novel?

I'm not a huge fan of novels.

Any quote you remember as your favourite?

“Don't be addicted to money. Work to learn, don't work for money. Work for knowledge.' - Robert Kiyosaki

How important is it to read?

One of the first things life taught me is that you learn when you read. Even if it's not in the context of reading from a book as is traditional, I believe that the bulk of what we know as humans is from what we read and interact with. As a footballer, how do you sign a contract when you can't read its content?

WILLIAM TROOST-EKONG - DEFENDER AT FK HAUGESUND, NORWAY

What book(s) are you reading at the moment?

Barack Obama - Dreams from my father, Alan Sugar - The way I see It and of course, The Bible

What book has made the most impact in your life?

The Secret - by Rhonda Byrne, I read it when I was a young boy and it has been influential ever since.

Which do you prefer, fiction or auto/biography?

I prefer to read biographies because I like having an insight into successful peoples’ lives so I can learn something.
https://static.goal.com/di/C4970C838A7C346D1A6BCEA77B1FE0DE.jpg
Who is your favourite author?

I don't have one particular favourite author.

Who is your favourite character from a novel?

Ove, from 'A Man Called Ove' written by Fredrik Backman, his character shows a person’s exterior doesn't always reflect their interior. So it's important not to judge as you never know what people's struggles are.

Any quote you remember as your favourite?

“Remember that your thoughts are the primary cause of everything” Rhonda Byrne - The Secret

How important is it to read?

Priceless. Knowledge is power!

[b]REVEALED: POLITICS OF THE 42 MAN EAGLES LIST FOR EGYPT CLASH

https://i0.wp.com/owngoalnigeria.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/image-10.jpg?resize=300%2C191

The list of Super Eagles players called up by coach Samson Siasia for the must win double clash against the Pharaohs of Egypt has generated lots of controversies.

Owngoalnigeria.com in it’s style of revealing the news behind the news brings to you indices we gathered were taken before some names were included while some were controversially excluded.

A list of possible players for the game has already been drawn up by former Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh in conjuction with his assistants but one among his assistant Salisu Yusuf who is also a part of the present technical crew tried in futility to make a case for the players on the list.

New coach Samson Siasia already has players in his mind hence a player like Fanendo Adi was preferred ahead of Anthony Ujah same as Stanley Amuzie whose choice knocked off AS Trencin Kingsley Madu.

Amuzie we gathered was invited to be a back up to first choice left full back Elderson Echjiejile as a means of compensating him for missing out on a spot at the U-23 AFCON in Senegal after playing in almost all of their qualifiers.

The Olhanense of Portugal left full back has only 30 minutes of professional football in his career as the former Flying Sport academy ace is just recovering from an injury that kept him out for six months.

Seun Oduduwa and Sincere Seth players from non league sides Nath Boys and Rhapsody FC are integral part of the Super Eagles interim manager U-23 team and their inclusion was basically done to give them experience and exposure ahead of their Olympic campaign in Rio.

Aminu Umar reportedly made the list on the strength of his decent form this season for Osmanlispor in Turkey, where he has 3 goals in 18 games including a brace against Galatasary but his inclusion over Granada’s Isaac Success has reasons.

Siasia has been an admirer of Aminu Umar for long but all his effort to work with the 20 year old at U-23 level failed to yield fruit but if Sunday Oliseh was still coach of the Super Eagles it would have been Success in the team and not Umar.

Success who plays in the La-Liga had his chances of making the team depleted after Oliseh’s departure despite scoring two times more than Aminu and seven more appearances in the prestigious La-Liga than his colleague who plays in the Turkish Superliga.

However the inclusion of Azubuike Okechukwu of second division Turkish side Yeni Matalyspor ahead of his teammate and more prestigious colleague Sunday Mba has a shade of sentiments written over it.

Although our source claimed his inclusion was mainly for him to understudy the midfield duo of Mikel Obi and Ogenyi Onazi, we however know as a fact that his agent Arsalan Urmat has close ties with the interim Super Eagles coach.

Much has been made about the inclusion of Chibuzor Okonkwo at the expense of Mainz 05 Leon Balogun from the Super Eagles squad for the game against Egypt.

Owngoalnigeria.com can however revealed that Okonkwo belongs to a selected few the new interim manager of the Super Eagles Samson Siasia calls “My Boys”.

27 year old Okonkwo in Nigeria’s ill fated attempt to qualify for AFCON 2012 under Samson Siasia he played in all but one of Nigeria’s qualifier which was the decider against Guinea where illness caused by a Chicken Pox infection saw him missed out.

Okonkwo national team experience have all come under Samson Siasia which includes games at U-23 level where he went to Beijing 2008 and two years later made his debut for the senior national team when Siasia was coach and till date has 9 caps to his name.

The Jos born defender aside having all his national team participation under Siasia was also signed by the Eagles interim coach while he was at Heartland FC of Owerri.

However despite all of this exposures, Okonkwo is yet to play professional in Europe and his only stint outside Nigeria was a six month spell at Libya’s Asswehly SC before returning back to Nigeria to join Ifeanyi Ubah FC.

His recent invitation is meant to help him relaunch himself after numerous failed attempt to take his stock abroad.

Logic, bro!

Let's use your train of thought for others invited for the matches.

So if Iwobi was invited, your excuse for Leon holds no water. And for your informaation, Leon has played many times on Nigerian soil, including the Kaduna field, and he has not disappointed.

What does Adi have that Success does not have more. Adi has been resting for the past 2 months without playing games. Success plays every week. He even scored in the Spanish league yesterday.

We are talking about inviting our best legs across the world, and you are giving excuses for taking below par players above players playing against the best in the world. SMH

What's Chibuzor Okonkwo doing amongst the home based stars? Heard he is amongst the top 3 RB in the Nigerian league.

Mowiz mentioned on twitter that Siasia is the most corrupt coach in Nigeria based on his experience as a journalist. For me, I will still reserve my verdict but this selection does not impress me.

Coach Samson Siasia has extended invitation to FSV Mainz 05 of Germany defender Leon Balogun ahead of this month’s Africa Cup of Nations double –take qualifiers against the Pharaohs of Egypt. The latest invitation brings to 21 the number of overseas –based players called for the games.

Also on Friday, Siasia declared that only those who show guts and grit, and ability to adapt to conditions, would be fielded against the Pharaohs.

The Super Eagles’ new boss stated that there would be no sentiments or consideration of previous ability as only the training sessions in Kaduna and Alexandria would be used to decide the 18 players on the roll for each game.

“These are two matches that we have to win. There would no looking at what someone had done in the past, or current form at club level. If you are doing well at your club at the moment and you can’t show ferocious form in training and ability to adapt to the environment, then you would have no place.

“I am excited at the debate that has been generated by the team list. You can never satisfy everyone. The important thing is that we know the players we want for these big games and we have invited them, and we believe in them to deliver.”

The 1994 Africa Cup of Nations gold medallist assured that he has been speaking with all the players on the list and has received assurance that everyone is ready to give his all in both games.

“We continue to ask for the support of every Nigerian as we count down to the two matches. Our people should believe that we can do it, and we will do it.”

Nigeria host Egypt in Kaduna on Friday, March 25 and visit the Pharaohs in Alexandria on Tuesday, March 29 in two crucial 2017 Cup of Nations qualifiers. Egypt top the Group G table with six points, two more than the Eagles who are in second place.

BREAKING NEWS: Siasia hands late call-up invitation to Leon Balogun. Details to follow.

Leon's late inclusion now brings the no. Of foreign pros officially invited to 21. Home-based remain 22. So it's now a 43-man squad.
.........................................................................................

The Mainz 05 defender had been sensationally left

After reading Siasia's initial comments on why he initially left out Leon Balogun, I was totally disappointed. The reasons he gave didn't really add up for me. His reasons for leaving out Success too is crazy. He spoke about his conversion rate. Excuse me!!! Success plays for the worst team in La liga and still has 5 goals and 3 assists in 25 games. THE LA LIGA IS THE BEST LEAGUE IN THE WORLD QUALITY-WISE. FOLLOWED BY THE EPL (which is the most popular, most intense and most followed league).

Well, at least, THANKS GOODNESS HE'S MADE A U-TURN ON LEON. Reminds me of how Oliseh initially left out Iheanacho only to include him as a late call-up (a U-turn akin to Siasia's current action).

Na wa ooo......

The list looks a little better but still far from perfect.

-Amuzie ahead of Madu is a no no for me.

-Adi or Aminu ahead of Success is another no, no...

But it's okay. The likes of Ighalo, Victor Moses, Moses Simon, Ahmed Musa and Kelechi Iheanacho (midfield/forward hybrid role) are more than enough to make our attack produce the goals. Just that it's about time Success got blooded into the Super Eagles. That's all.

Well, I could say more.... But right now, it's about "BEATING THE PHAROAHS" over those two legs of this Afcon double header. Hopefully, subsequent lists will be devoid of politics and sentiments.

I believe we can present perfect lists every time the Super Eagles have games. Our coaches just need to be honest and 100% merits-oriented (NOT 75% merits-oriented and 25% sentimental). Let's go Eagles......

Nothing can be perfect in this world,so is siasia and his 43-man list,I would have love to see Isaac success on this list even if he didn't get to play,he seems to be unlucky with all these coaches, could it be attitude problem or what, cause the guy is a good player especially with Nigeria jersey,I hope he goes to the Olympics to prove his worth. For what is worth,I still commend the list even though it's not a perfect list. With peace in the camp, these boys should be able to get the job done.
With no disrespect to Almed Musa,I would want Siasia to give the captain band to the most suitable player in the camp since he is the new coach and have the right to choose a new captain,or better still the players should choose who will be their captain by voting, this will no doubt restore peace and order in the house.

Siasia is right to drop Leon Balogun. He's in-form but in the German League with grade A pitches and cool weather. Do you think Leon can perform excellently on the Kaduna Pitch with that kind of weather?!
I think Leon Balogun grown up in Germany, hence he's not used to the African weather! He may flop if he's invited for the Matches!
As for Issac Success, is he gonna bench either of Moses, Musa or Simon?! Ighalo is definitely gonna top-strike and might be supported by either Aaron or Kelechi; then what's the essence of inviting him just to sit on the Bench?!
My thought though!
Sir this your excuse can't hold sway. Politics is what is our problem. Every NFF member, Coach, agent want's his boy to be featured.

Ok now that Balogun has been invited, what becomes of these excuses?

Did you check my subsequent post? I have nothing against Leon Balogun, but my concern is; we should have trust in the local Coaches instead of condemning or criticizing any decision or policy they make. Everyone thinks Oliseh gonna be a fine Coach with the way he analyses Football and tactics on the Supersport Channels! Alas! He's a precise definition of failure with the National Team! I salute everyone on this thread, I'm an ardent follower though in ghost mode these days! I do enjoy the contributions of Icons, Goodjoe and Co! Kudos to everyone!
Whoever is invited by the Siasia led Coaching Crew deserves it! And I believe they invited Players they confidently trust will deliver! They understand the importance of the Matches, and they wouldn't dare to perform woefully in any of the legs!

Keshi - NFF technical committee made sure they pushed out 'Big Boss'

by Samm Audu

The technical committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has been described as “a source of destabilization” in the country’s football and they have only succeeded in bullying and sacking national team coaches.

Former top NFF officials Charles Ojugbana and Austin Mgbolu raised serious concerns over the technical committee headed by Chris Green, saying the committee is one of the problems facing football in Nigeria.

“This group of people (technical committee) has hijacked football in the country. They have bullied and even sacked coaches who have gone against them,” said former NFF spokesman Mgbolu on a television discussion programme this week.

“They made sure they pushed out Stephen Keshi and now it is Oliseh.

“They have had overbearing influence and have shown they are a source of destabilization.

“This is a committee that should be dominated by technical experts with proven track record, not just somebody who will analyse the match between Arsenal and Manchester United.”

Ojugbana, who rose to be deputy general secretary of the NFF, also echoed a similar position, while arguing that the NFF have totally mismanaged the appointment and subsequent resignation of Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh.

“Oliseh was hailed as ‘Pep Guardiola of Africa’ when he was appointed. But his resume did not back such a claim and his appointment was mismanaged,” he said.

I have not seen anything slanderous here. I wonder what all this is for. It seems people just want it their way or no way.

The idea of training some of the Olympic Boys along side the National team is brilliant. Coach Siasia and his crew deserves praises for their foresight.

You guys should allow the coaches work before slaying them.

Coach Monday Sinclair told you guys that two years is needed for a coach to deliver. You guys want Coach Siasia's neck in just few weeks.

I am surprised we are still on the level of the coach must play this player. It does not work like that. Coaches have their preferences.

Let the coach work than spending time to make everyone very happy.

Whoever Coach Siasia drops for the final list should not generate baseless accusations. This is serious stuff with little time for the coaches to entertain people's sentiments

You guys chill. Coach Siasia dropped him because of conversion rate simple. 5 goals in 25 games is poor. There is no time to access whether there are factors causing this.

Remember Coach Amunike who knows Success more than all of us, is in the coaching crew.

Pellegrini took a tender Nacho to a preseason tour when he was young, he promoted Nacho instead of spending Millions of pounds on a proven striker. Give Pels some slack.

Emmanuel Amuneke was in Spain when that list was drawn up and submitted before its release yesterday.

It's a relatively good list. Why did he include Balogun if his initial list was okay to him?

I understand Siasia has a job to do and has his player preferences based on his style and philosophy. But that does not mean some of us here don't know what we're saying.
I know some here have their player preferences but for me, I prefer to judge based on quality, form and potentials....... I don't play the "stupid" tribal games some people may play when discussing players. Why? I don't go with sentiments but #FACTS AND ALL-ROUND QUALITY.

I touted Leon Balogun as a big omission in that list.

Some here did too.... Luckily, Siasia realised he was wrong to have left out Leon. Why go back on a decision since he's made his "preferred selection" of players at this point?

As for Isaac, come on Sir, give him a break.... He's in the worst team in the world's best league "quality-wise", THE LA LIGA (how they survive relegation beats me).

Anyway, I believe the Siasia-Amuneke combo with assistance from Salisu Yusuf and Alloy Agu will get us positive results against the Egyptians on march 25 and 29. Some of the players on that list are more than enough to deliver.

To be honest, the 43-man list is a mix of the super brilliant (Ighalo, Mikel, Iheanacho, Moses Simon, Victor Moses and some other "likes"wink, the washed-up (Chibuzor Okonkwo) and the average (Chima Akas, Prince Aggreh, Etim Matthew, and some other "likes"wink. Subsequent lists will be better hopefully.

Godspeed Eagles......

He added Leon Balogun not because he was wrong but to please the crying fans and media who were blasting him for the noninclusion of Balogun.

You can say this is average, or this is not top quality. That does not change the coaches opinion.

Mikel who looked washed up to Mourinho and looks a Star under Hiddink.

Remember the cry for Ike Uche under Coach Keshi? When he gave the big player the chance, what happened? He missed it. He missed a second and Aluko pounced on it and scored.

The Coach should make his decision and we support him to excel. There are different reasons a coach can drop a player. If he feels Balogun is not fast enough, why force him to play him?

The Aggreh, you are calling average is the one from CHAN. Please that guy is not average. In CHAN, he even played off his natural wing and performed, especially in that Niger game. He is right footed and mostly played on the left.
