HzRF:
Lagos—Oba Rilwan Akiolu of Lagos, yesterday, supported the proposal by the state Assembly for the relocation of the popular Mile 12 market which witnessed misunderstanding between Hausa and Yoruba traders last week.

Oba Akiolu According to him, the relocation should however be embarked upon if it will bring peace and tranquillity to the communities. His view was also echoed by Oba Samuel Oloyede of Ikosi who noted that the call for the relocation of the market by the State House of Assembly was a step in the right direction.

Oba Akiolu also requested that Governor Akinwunmi Ambode should severely punish the perpetrators of the clash. Akiolu made the demands at a stakeholders forum organised at the Iga-Idugaran, Lagos Island for residents and stakeholders in the communities.

He lamented that the clash which further led to the destruction of property and displacement of residents was not acceptable. He described ethnic clashes in the state as one too many, urging residents to co-exist with one another, saying that Lagos is a melting pot of ethnic nationalities in the country and wondered why some people incessantly attempted to threaten the diversity of the state.

The monarch urged traditional rulers in the communities to give true leadership to their subjects and swiftly intervene in disputes before they escalate. Earlier, the Sarkin Hausawa of Lagos State, Alhaji Aminu Yaro, lamented that the incident was unfortunate and promised to constantly engage the leaders of Arewa communities on peaceful co-existence with their host.

His words “The incident was unfortunate. We will do our best to talk to everybody on how we can handle things better to avert this kind of problem.” Oba Samuel Oloyede of Ikosi on his part, thanked Akiolu for holding the meeting, saying it was an opportunity for stakeholders to strategise and find lasting peace at Mile 12.

Is this not the same Oba acting tough and all during the infamous Lagoon fiasco? Same Oba now preaching peace? lol.. the hypocrisy is just something else.

Hate to say this but based on the scenarios that played out last April and this month, the Oba displayed he was both a hypocrite and a coward.

Oga I stay at ikorodu and know very well what has been happening, you still haven't gotten the point, the mile 12 market is mainly a food market for lagos state and not for the whole Nigeria.. How would every other part of Lagos State get to Ijebu ode if they won't prefer to pass ikorodu Road? You think they will prefer to go and pass abeokuta to link Sagamu? The bridge amosun built would be favouring those in ogun state mainly and not lagosians who use the mile 12 market mainly .

Also you experienced free drive along mile 12 not because the market was closed. It is because of the covets used as a guide against the mile 12 marketers crossing and blocking the whole Road, so basically even before mile 12 was shut we have been having a free ride along that area because of the initiative of putting the covet to stop those crossing and blocking the roads from the market.. It is therefore better that the market remains in mile 12 and I know it will remain there because the oba of ikorodu once complained about the congestion of the road linking ikorodu, so am pretty sure it will not be moved to such a location, it will end up staying in mile 12.

Their best bet is to take the market to badagry or places with low population.

the market will not remain in mile 12 in the long run, it will surely be relocated including owode, mile 12 is more of a wholesale market than an all comers market, the wholesalers will continue to patronize the market no matter where it is relocated to. And talking about the bridge amosun built, i was actually referring to the trucks coming from wherever to discharge their goods in the market. Mile 12 is not the only market Lagosians patronise for Christs' sake and before the emergence of mile 12, Lagosians were surviving. The badagry axis is actually more populated than you think when you factor the fact that it is an international border.

.....because we cannot have two Lagoon species which as we all know is retained and reserved for the Igbos. To more serious matter the relocation is not an absolute solution is a fraction of the whole. These murederous tribe that is fast making everywhere in Nigeria unsafe must be strategically restricted from a comfortable sorjourn in Yoruba land AND MUST BE MADE TO PAY FULLY FOR THEIR SINS if this dasteredly act is perpetrated again any wherein yoruba land. That will only happen yoruba leaders and our hungry money loving youth can wake up to the reality that this behaviour of Notherners will no more be tolerated.

The man preached lagoon with ya biitch arse wrapper wearing Igbo leaders sitting there, you lot found fault in that and went on a mad river of tears for months, crying everywhere, with complaints, ultimatums, and signing useless petitions. And now, the man decided to use a different approach - it's still the same Igbo nutters finding fault in the approach, with tears.

Like seriously, what do you Igbos want? Or you lot just love crying like Mark Dacascos' character in Crying Freeman? Igbos have to be the most pathetic people on the planet. It's a shame, really. And I love me some juicy Igbo pums. I guess Igbos just have too much fluid in their body. grin

Let's think as a family:

We pick mile 12 market and move it to another location, let's assume IMOTA axis.

we know immediately the existing market becomes vacant - but what will become of that space?
will the LASG cease the opportunity to chart an exit path to divert traffic off the IKORODU-KETU road, or it will be another estate for the high and mighty? (thats not the focus of this gist anyways)

There is every likelihood, our Northern brothers will relocate across the state, most of them to the new Market site.

Technically, the rift moves away temporarily. Lagos is happy, and peace seems restored. The government earns its applaud, and world conferences are held using Lagos as a model in rift resolutions.

But then, in the next 4years - suddenly there is outburst of emotions again in the new market (similar incident as always been in current mile 12). This time sadly, because the site is way out of town, before the Army & Police could rally for the chase, hundreds of houses and lives have been lost.

Is it at this point, we will realise the issue hasnt been well dealt with?!

Yes, i vote relocation.

But all the more, i Vote "Acceptance" of all as equal in the state.

Laws that empower whistle blowing on "public harrassments of visitors or non-Lagos citizens" should be activated. And specific punishment guaranteed in the Law. And likewise for non - Lagosians constituting a menace and how these should be addressed.

The courts, the prisons, the police and the People need to brace up to build our city to what we want.

When the market is relocated to Ikorodu, will it solve the issues of ethnic clashes or is it that Govt thinks it's better to attack Ikorodu residents.
This move while laudable does not tackle the main reason why there are clashes.

Na dis be the same Oba that was threatening to kick Ibo people out of Lagos a short time ago? (Something that is NOT legally possible sha).
When Alahusa people dey make noise now, this same Oba suddenly turned into a scared "ologbo" or pussy-cat. Which kind Oba be dis one sha?
Did Arewa people pay him some bribe money in secret or did Hausa leaders send their people to threaten the king behind closed doors?
This Oba should step down. We need a real brave, consistent Oba to take over the throne. We need an Oba who is not afraid of Gambari. An Oba that says the same thing all the time. That is not afraid of anybody.
