No,just amused that Nigerians expected things to remain the same once power was privatised.

Where do you think they would get the money from?We the customers.

It is well with us in Nigeria.
We were shock in our lagos office to see that electricity tarrif have been increased.
However, we saw that they have removed service charge.

Dis people are crook. in our own case, they were billing us based on estimation, dey were sucking or drilling us like oil.even wen we requested for meter dey keep mute because dey ar enjoyin estimating billing.it come to a point that we could't bear it any longer, We persuaded with full force to bring us a meter. Finally we got a meter, now the issue of meter reading is now a problem(meter reading different frm billing reading). It was so frustrated that i had to write to dia office hia in portharcourt for them to come and rectify the issue , all to no avail rather they choose to settle with the doubted and inaccurate readings. I call one of dia marketer informing her that we would't pay any bill until they come and resolve the issue. Corruption in power sector.

The country is slowly turning into a joke, run by scammers and conmen. Any and every thing is done with impunity not minding its effect on the masses- from fuel price hike to forex to social media clampdown to 5000 naira promise.... the list goes on

We must stand up for ourselves because no one gives a damn about us
Re: Did The National Assembly Finally Okay The Increase In Electricity Tariff? by emzila(m): 10:38pm On Mar 10, 2016
if the increase will enable fashola to achieve something good, so be it. in just 4days of black out in Ikeja, I ve spent 5k. that will translate to about 30k at the end of the month( weekend out of it) with the increase in tarrif, 10k-15k will take me for the whole month. let's be sincere to ourselves. what we should be clamouring for is the light. most of the so call senators and not acting sincerely in the interest of the masses.

My people have a common saying that a man who is of the habit of asking questions rarely misses his way. Last month the news was all over the internet that the Nigerian Senate ordered that the planned 40% increase in power tariff by NERC be reversed. My first question is; did the senate finally accede to the NERC's decision to hike the tariff? was the senate only making a suggestion? or does FG have the power to overrule the senate's directive for the increase to be reversed? I'm lost because the bill i just received from Enugu Disco (EEDC) just reflected the tariff increase as well as the ever sardonic unmetered fixed phantom consumption. The bills (Images attached below) shows a 40% increase from what i received last month. Please can someone help counsel me?

And that's not to mention that the energy consumption for my office space in a non-urban area had gradually increased from 150units to 300units over the past couple of months. How the estimated consumption is even calculated is "secret society code" because no one seems to know the criteria for estimating the power consumption for a particular building. I have complained without any meaningful solution from the local EEDC office here.

And this is not all, the bill you are seeing below is bill for energy "Unused", yes, you read right. I hardly had power for up to 2 hours a day for the entirety of last month, sometimes there were outages for 2-3days at a stretch. The last time i tried to take this up with the local marketer here, he proudly told me that they were instructed to allot bills to customers based on the value of energy imported, whether the energy got to us or not, which begs the question where in the world do consumers pay for goods/services that ended up with the manufacturer/wholesaler? I thought basic economics is that one pays for satisfaction derived from the services rendered?

All the talks about getting meters whether prepaid or postpaid has forever being mere lip service, which by the way i think is a deliberate action by these people to keep extorting us. Judging by how much power i got last month my bill for the month shouldn't have being up to 200naira even at the current tariff.

I really don't know how to deal with this. This whole thing is just very frustrating, I may not understand the processes and how these things go, but i sure know to understand if someone explains to me. I therefore beckon on those who do to weigh in, lemme actually understand what is going on.

From what you posted, there some things i observed

1. Your power consumption remained static that is in the month of February and March you consumed 300 units which is not realistic. It is either E.E.D.C staff just recorded what he or she likes or there was no electricity from the date your last metre was read.
2. Fixed charge has being removed which is a sign of relieve as subsequent bills will reduce drastically going by what you are paying
3. The new rates is about 40% increase that is from N23.05 to N32.13.

Advice:
Continue paying what you consume and a matter of fact, ensure that they show what was read and entered in their books so as to calculate how much you will pay when next they distribute bill to avoid cheating. If they should go back to the old rates, you will continue to pay fixed charge of N650 plus your consumption plus VAT plus the net arrears i saw there. Those kicking against the new rates wouldn't understand because with this new one, they tend to benefit more than the former. You pay as you consume provided there are no outstanding arrears that haven't being cleared.

To calculate your electricity bill you need the following steps:

1. calculate how much units you consumed if you are a post paid customer. To do that, You subtract your previous readings from the current readings. For example if your previous readings was 500 and the current is 800, 800-500= 300units.
2. You multiply the units by the rates charged, in this instance the current rate is N32.13* 300units = N9,639(energy charge)
3. you calculate VAT which is 5% of what you consumed that is 5% of N9,639=N481.95
4. Add your consumption plus your vat to see how much your bill would be assuming there are no arrears. N9,639 + N481.95 = N10,120.95.

Disclaimer: asuustrike doesn't have any link with E.E.D.C neither is asuustrike a staff of E.E.D.C. i was only expressing my opinion on what i saw posted.

Actually, the capital letter D means that his meter is faulty and therefore cannot be read and so his bill is being fully estimated every month.

If you look at the 2 bills very well, you'll notice that the Last Actual Reading (LAR) for both January and February are the same. And the LAR date was not shown in the bill. That means that the last time his meter was actually read was when it was fully functioning, which was God knows when. Also, notice that there was no Present Actual Reading (PAR) for both January and February. Normally, LAR minus PAR equals your energy consumption for the period. So, it is obvious that the 300 figure they put as his consumption was estimated.

OP needs to take it up with the relevant EEDC officials so that his meter can be repaired else he will keep paying for what he didn't use

Also, i can see that the fixed charge was only applied on his January bill. It was scrapped in February and i can't see it on his February bill.

Thanks for the info. Could you believe that the man who always come read my meter said a faulty meter cannot be repaired and I said to him that is a big lie. Normally when I am going to work or out, I usually put the meter on neutral via my change-over, so when the market came to check the reading while inward away, she wrote MF (mal-functioning Meter) against my reading. I got almost 7k that month as bill then I went to their office to complain. So I asked the man that how donyou expect my meter to be reading when there is no load on it? He said at least I should always put a bulb on for the meter to be running. I said no that I can't because if I am away and there is power surge and the unthinkable should happen, what will the electricity company do? He laughed. Then when I got home, I was always reading the meter 2 twice a week and take a snap shot of the reading for a month. I went to their office again and should the person in charge that was how my bill came down. Also I have instructed anyone at home that if the meter man comes for reading that they too should the reading with him and record it down. No story and it's working

The National Assembly enjoys playing to the gallery. This is because they don't have the power to control independent agencies, or even the private sector. Instead of them to face law making.

Most Nigerians do not read or track information. Like you rightly pointed out this increment had been agreed with the DISCOs by the 7th Assembly yet people are blaming Fashola, the current National Assembly is aware but decided to play on the intelligence and emotions of Nigerians by passing the recent resolution.

If the national assembly feels strongly about this increase in tariff and JAMB they should make laws to back up their resolutions, that is what they are paid to do not to be discussing the propriety or otherwise of marrying 2 or more wives.

I wouldn't say you are ignorant I'd rather believe you just don't want to accept a superior argument.

Using your GSM OPS analogy,I can recall that glo had to pay twice for their licence, invested even more on infrastructure and began operations with per sec.billing, though their tariff was high compared to what is obtainable now but we all paid for the services we enjoyed.

Then I ask again, how much exactly has the DISCOS invested in overhauling the infrastructure, ain't they supposed to ensure service delivery before thinking about any increment. How do you expect customers to pay for a nonexistent service. angry shocked
