That book is not meant for beginners, I recommend you read Beginning PHP and MySQL 4th Edition by W. Jason Gilmore first

It's OOP based , it introduces the basics of PHP before talking about OOP. If u read it thoroughly , after d introductory parts d rest of d book is based on OOP.
