Funny thing is we 9ja people of today prefer to dismiss things recorded by eye witnesses of the time as lies. Tribalism & bigotry don't help either. The destruction of heritage all over 9ja make us look like a people without any history of achievement prior to oyinbo. It has massive psychological impact on us. African say things like "I hate being black, we contribute nothing to the world, what have we Africans ever invented?", etc. 12 Likes 1 Share |

Very profound read It's a pity we now rely on the white man to tell us our own history Ehen! Where're those Yoruba Obas (lemme not mention their names) that insist the Benin Kingdom is an offshoot of the Yoruba? Come and see that the Benin empire is far older than what you guys claim oh 16 Likes |

Some of the comments on this most educational thread that should make us reflect on what we have lost as a people and a nation are cringe-worthy. People turning an article that should reinvigorate a sense of national pride and preservation into an avenue for political mudslinging and crass displays of complete idiocy. See why Nigeria is headed nowhere? 19 Likes 1 Share |

codemaniacs: True to some extent. But many things destroyed can be rebuilt or restored, partially at least. Even those left like the moats were not preserved. 30 years ago, lots of the moats were in a pristine state. Even some ramparts were still very visible. Lots of the stuff were declared/gazetted as National Heritage by FG decades ago, which means even Edo State govt cannot tamper with it. Not even to preserve or repair officially. But FG never does its job. So there we're. Many other Benin towns like Udo had their own moats and walls/ramparts too. 7 Likes |

Hemanwel: The roads are still here, though some are really dilapidated and some are still very nice. But some i need money youths now sell water way/moat and people end up buying the plot and filling it with sand and ending up diverting water to these well carved roads in some of the areas. 2 Likes |
