Boko Haram: Military Yet to Confirm, Authenticate Shekau’s ‘Surrender Video’

The Nigerian military is yet to either confirm or authenticate the video where the controversial leader of Boko Haram terrorist group allegedly surrendered.

Reports had it that the jihadist group troubling Nigeria’s northeastern region has surrendered through a video. The video shows Shekau surrendering and advising followers to follow suit and give in to the superior power of Nigeria.

But neither Director of Defence Information (DDI), Brig-Gen. Rabe Abubakar, nor any other military Spokesperson have confirmed the authenticity of the video.

Abubakar has not responded to several calls and text messages put across to him but sources within the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) said that the military are preparing a formal response to the latest video from Boko Haram.

The video, which appeared late night on Wednesday/Thursday morning, showed the terrorist kingpin, who was rumoured to have been killed several times, advising his followers to “surrender to save themselves”, following constant bombardment by the Nigerian military.

However, a report has emerged that the Nigeria military is subjecting the purported new video to forensic examinations in order to ascertain its authenticity.

According to PRNigeria, the development is sequel to calls being made by Abubakar Shekau in the said video on his followers to embrace peace and stop the fighting by sheath their swords and surrender.

A top military officer was quoted to have said: “The ongoing campaign against insurgency and indeed Boko Haram is being intensified most especially in the Sambisa forest, and its environs in order to further degrade and demystify the sect and bring them to their knees.
