Nigerian Army says women abducted by Boko Haram in Madagali ‘rescued’ The Nigerian Army says 16 women and girls abducted on Wednesday in Madagali, Adamawa State, by suspected Boko Haram militants, have been rescued. The Public Relations Officer of 28 Task Force Brigade Mubi in Adamawa, A.O. Fadare, said troops rescued the women while pursuing their abductors, according to the News Agency of Nigeria. Mr. Fadare did not give the number of those rescued. “I am still trying to verify from Madagali as you know, the operation is still on,” he was quoted as saying. Local sources had told PREMIUM TIMES some of the women were taken from a bush where they had gone in search of firewood. Others were seized from a river while fishing. Those abducted included 14 women and two girls. A source said two women managed to escape the abductors by pretending to have drowned. “The two women who are in real state of trauma told us that the suspected Boko Haram insurgents had a field day carting away the women when their escorts ran away for their dear lives,” the source said. He said two vigilante operatives who escorted the women to the bush fled on sighting the heavily armed men, who arrived good numbers. “They left the women to their own devices as the gunmen were left unchallenged leading to the abduction of the said women,” the source said. Confirming the incident, the member representing Michika/ Madagali Federal constituency, Adamu Kamale, said, “I just received the shocking news to the effect that about 16 women have been abducted by Boko Haram. “We have been witnessing pockets of attacks contrary to the belief that security has been fully restored in the area. As a member of NASS (National Assembly), I have been calling for the deployment of security personnel but to no avail as the government seems to have relegated our concerns to the background”. The Police Public Relations Officer of Adamawa, Othman Abubakar, said on learning about the development, the command deployed officers to the affected area. He said police were working “round the clock to track down the abducted women and girls”. |

Information Minister of Galmudug State Mohamed Aden Osman said the fighting was still going on and reported military progress against the insurgents, XInhua reported. "Our forces killed 23 of the fighters, captured several others and confiscated weapons from them," Osman said in a statement released on Friday. Suicide bomber detained in Cameroon says she’s one of Chibok girls A suspected female suicide bomber who was intercepted in northern Cameroon on Friday before she could blow herself up claimed to be one of the 219 schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram in Chibok, North-East Nigeria in April 2014, military and local government sources said. According to a Reuters report on Friday, two girls carrying explosives were stopped by local self-defence forces in the village of Limani in northern Cameroon. They were then handed over to Cameroonian soldiers belonging to a multi-national force set up to take on Boko Haram. Boko Haram militants raided Chibok, Borno State in April 2014, abducting about 300 schoolgirls, who have since been in their captivity. Despite several promises by former President Goodluck Jonathan and President Muhammadu Buhari, the girls have yet to be found. “One of them indeed declared that she is one of the Chibok hostages. She is around 15. We are now verifying, because on the Nigerian side they have the names and photos of these girls,” a local government administrator, Raymond Roksdo, told Reuters. Two military sources, who asked not to be identified as they were not authorised to speak to the press, also confirmed that the girl had claimed to have been one of the Chibok abductees. “We need a few days to be able to confirm this information. We have to debrief all the men who were present and interrogate the two girls before we can say anything,” one of the military sources said. Meanwhile, the troops of the Nigerian Army have killed two female suicide bombers who were allegedly planning attacks in Borno State. The Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman, said that soldiers of the 7 Division Garrison, Maiduguri, on Friday intercepted the two female suicide bombers around 1.20 am south of Umurari village on the outskirts of Maiduguri. Usman said that while one of the female suicide bombers detonated the explosives strapped to her body and killed herself on sighting the soldiers, the other was taken out by one of the snipers of the garrison. He said that the combined team of the army and the Police Explosive Ordinance Disposal detonated the explosive device that was strapped to the body of the late female suicide bomber. He said the troops and the members of the Civilian Joint Task Force were combing the area to prevent a further breach of peace there. He said, “The ever alert and vigilant troops of 7 Division Garrison based in Maiduguri, in conjunction with Civilian JTF, averted yet another suicide attack on the innocent citizens of Borno State today. “The troops intercepted two female suicide bombers at about 1.20am this morning, almost 100 metres south of Umurari village, outskirts of Maiduguri. “However, one of the suicide bombers, on sighting our troops, detonated her explosive device, killing herself instantly, while the second bomber, in an attempt to escape, was gunned down by one of the garrison snipers. “The combined team of the Nigeria Police and the Nigerian Army’s Explosive Ordinance Disposal team safely detonated the unexploded Improvised Explosive Devices strapped on the gunned down suicide bomber. “It is important to state that there was no casualty beyond the two suicide bombers. Nigeria: Boko Haram - Military Insiders, DHQ Wrangle Over U.S. MRAP Donations Military insiders have branded the Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicles (MRAP/MRVs) recently donated by the United States Government to Nigeria as a 'Greek gift' that is costing the country time and money. But the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has debunked such feelers, saying that the vehicles are being used in the ongoing clearance operations in the North-east with much success. THISDAY was informed by reliable military sources that the $11-million worth 24 MRAP was yet to be put into use because most of them at the time of hand over to the Nigerian Army were unserviceable. Investigations had revealed that the land mines and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDS) rather than Boko Haram terrorists, constitutes the major obstacle to clearance and mop up phase of the Counter-Terrorism and Counter-Insurgency (CT COIN) operations in the North East, especially in the mine-littered Sambisa forest. While the Nigerian Army has since deployed minesweepers to detect and demine the operational areas, the use MRAP donated by the US, which are designed specifically to withstand mine explosions, IEDs attacks and ambushes is still in doubt. "I can tell you that serious efforts are being made by the military and federal government to address the issue (land mines) as quickly as possible. But as for the American gift, that can best be described as a Greek offer. None has been put to use and none can be in the nearest future," the intelligence source stated. Also a senior officer who spoke to THISDAY on the issue noted that while the US donation was a symbolic diplomatic gesture, the equipment was in actuality a "carcass" which very few, if any has been put in use. "I am not sure the number of the US Greek offers that have been put to use by the Army for now but remember, they were more or less like carcasses when donated," the source said. However, the Director of Defence Information (DDI), Brig-Gen. Rabe Abubakar, the concerns about the possible "unserviceability" of most of the MRVs, saying they are perfectly in order. Abubakar said the vehicles have been helpful in the ongoing operations, adding that there was a plan to add more to the Nigerian military inventory. He said: "The MRVs are working and helping us well even in the ongoing operations where the vehicles drove through mines and nothing happened to our troops and we killed more terrorists." "So it is helping and we are adding more arsenal to that. The most important thing is that donations have been made to the Nigerian Armed Forces to enhance our operations. Two, we are making a lot of successes as a result of that. Three, fighting insurgency requires a lot of synergy between nations, and just of recent the Germans too requested to assist Nigeria." "We are equally impressed by the representative of the UK government and also other countries, including America because the terrorism we are dealing with is not just a national issue but a global one. At least there has been donation, and it's helping us to fight this insurgency. We are making a lot of progress," he added. On January 7, the US Defence Attaché to Nigeria, Col. Patrick Doyle, officially handed over the 24 MRAPs to the Nigerian military at a brief ceremony in Lagos, saying it was part of the US commitment to assist Nigeria in its war against insurgency. Doyle who assured that eight more of the crucial mine-clearing armoured vehicles were expected to arrive the country soon, added that half of the 24 vehicles were in good working condition but will need "minor work." Responding then, the Chief of Policy and Plans, DHQ, Maj-Gen. Barry Ndiomu, who represented the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), said the vehicles were needed to prosecute the war in the North-east but asked for assistance to put it in use. Ndiomu noted that there are many land mines buried by the Boko Haram terrorists across the North-east. "We appreciate what you have done, although like Oliver Twist, we would appreciate if you can do even more," he said, adding that some of the armoured vehicles were not serviceable and requested for help from the US to procure their spare parts. But since then, the usability of the vehicles in the theatre of operations have been in doubt with the Nigerian Army going ahead to acquire mine sweepers, the first of its kind into its inventory. The Director of Army Public Relations (DAPR), Col. Sani Usman, had confirmed the deployment of the newly acquired hi-tech mine clearing equipment in the ongoing military operation against Boko Haram terrorists last month. Usman said the commissioned equipment were the first mine clearing machines in the inventory of the Nigerian Army and among the best in the world, saying "the introduction of new equipment for the northeast operation had begun to yield results." However, some military authorities who spoke on the condition anonymity have also noted much more of the minesweepers and MRAP will be needed to complete the operations in the North-east, and clear the terrorists particularly from the Sambisa forest. THISDAY had reported how the Sambisa-Allargano forest area are heavily mined and the available mine-sweepers are not enough to clear the operational area for the ground troops to move in. Investigations also revealed that the aerial bombardments are not usually complemented by ground troops' advancement because of the challenges of terrain, deadly land mines and IEDs. |

realnas:To me Obama has sympathy for those countries battling with insurgencies and his willing to help, but people regard that part of him of sympathy as being too soft or weak. And there some laws that binds him from extending such hand of gesture ,for instance Nigeria ; In a speech before the US Institute of Peace, he blamed a “blanket application” of Leahy Laws, legislation introduced by Sen. Patrick J. Leahy to prohibit US public funds from being given to foreign military units involved in gross human rights violations. And you can't just brake the law like that!! He donated huge amount of money African countries battling terrorism only Nigeria was excluded. He even went to the extent of donating a C130 hercules to Chad last year, the list is endless. But to some extent you sense some politics play. |

On behalf of Officers and men of 93 Battalion, I am delighted to welcome you to our Headquarters in Takum. Ibi LGA of Taraba state has been characterized by ethno-religious crisis and the one of 25th March 2016 was one of such. The incidence started by some youths throwing stones at Muslims in the mosque during Juma'at prayers which later escalated to sporadic shooting, but for the timely intervention of troops and other sister security agencies, normalcy was restored and 24 hours curfew imposed. For now, there has been no report of death. 3. However, 6 persons have so far been arrested in connection to the crisis and manhunt is ongoing for other perpetrators. The troops have recovered 3 AK-47 assault rifles, 2 AK47 magazines, 4 single barrel guns, 11 cartridges, 1 axe, 2 hammers, 1 cutlass, 2 handsaws, 1 knife, 3 mobile phones, 1 catapult, 1 broken butt, 19 rounds of 5.56mm, 104 rounds of 7.2mm (Special) ammunitions and I litre of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) from the suspects. It is worthy to note, prior to this incidence, the Unit had 2 major peace meetings as directed by higher authorities between the stakeholders within the same week but it seemed all that was said fell on deaf ears, but dialogue will never cease. 5. We will continue to encourage the stakeholders to resolve the crisis politically and will not relent in making sure there is lasting peace in Ibi as stipulated in the Chief of Army Staff Vision. 6. Further more, measures have been put in place for more peace meetings to resolve the ongoing crisis in Ibbi LGA. SA selling arms to conflict regions Johannesburg - The arms industry in South Africa has seen the sale of arms to other countries soaring to R2.7-billion last year, including to countries in conflict. The National Conventional Arms Control Committee has said in a report, tabled in Parliament recently, that South Africa sold arms to countries including Iraq, Azerbaijan, Kenya, Nigeria and Burundi. Burundi is in the midst of a civil war after President Pierre Nkurunziza extended his term in office by another five years. This has sparked civil unrest in his country, leading to what human right groups say is a clampdown on the opposition. South Africa sold armoured combat vehicles to the value of R44-million to troubled Burundi last year. President Jacob Zuma told Parliament three weeks ago that he had signed a military treaty with Nigeria in its battle with the insurgent Islamic group Boko Haram. In Nigeria, South Africa sold armoured combat vehicles worth R64.8-million, artillery for R1.28-million, bombs for R9.7-million and ammunition for R31.8-million. Boko Haram has killed hundreds of Nigerians in the past few years and kidnapped villagers and schoolgirls. On his visit to Nigeria three weeks ago, Zuma signed a number of treaties, including on military co-operation. Nigerian President Mu- hammadu Buhari has promised to clamp down on the militant Islamist group. Islamists In east Africa, South Africa has sold arms to Kenya, another country in trouble with Islamists. Al-Shabaab has been crossing the border from Somalia to bomb Kenya for its involvement in AU missions designed to clear the group out of Somalia. In Kenya, South Africa has sold armoured combat vehicles worth R13.3-million and ammunition to the tune of R1.6-million. The Islamist group has conducted a number of raids into Kenya, leading to the deaths of hundreds of civilians. In Iraq the government has been fighting Islamists since the end of the Saddam Hussein reign in the early 2000s. Last year, South Africa sold armoured combat vehicles valued at R160.9-million to Iraq, as well as missile launchers costing R44.8-million. Azerbaijan has been involved in a border conflict with neighbouring Armenia over the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh, a landlocked area in the South Caucasus. The conflict has been sporadic since 1994, a few years after the collapse of the Soviet Union. South Africa has sold to Azerbaijan armoured combat vehicles for R26.6-million, heavy weapons for R16.1-million and warning equipment for R37.2-million. South Africa has also supplied military equipment to the UN mission in the war-torn Central African Republic, which has been engulfed in conflict since the ousting of President Francois Boziza three years ago. As part of the mission, South Africa has given the UN operation armoured combat vehicles. |

WAR ON TERRORISTS ; NAF TO EXPAND PLATFORM . IN its efforts to improve the aerial bombardments of terrorists targets, the Nigerian Air force (NAF), on Sunday, announced its determination to expand its platforms in the North-Eastern part of the country towards speedy response in counter-insurgency operations. The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadiq Abubakar, announced this during his visits to the military formations and traditional institutions in Borno State. According to him, “the Nigerian Air Force is exploring the possibility of expanding the Air Force group in the North-East to ensure the total restoration of peace is achieved in the shortest time possible.” “With the planned expansions, more personnel will be deployed and more platforms created to widen our operations towards timely and speedy response in counter-insurgency campaigns “We are already widening the roles of our regiments as special combat forces to secure and protect key points after successful operations,” he added. Air Marshal Abubakar, who commended the military in the ongoing campaign against terrorists, said the citizens have a lot of roles to play. “The public should complement the gallantry of our armed forces by being security conscious through timely reporting of suspicious objects, movements, or strange persons to the nearest security agencies. “Security is a collective effort not only that of security agencies as government alone cannot provide security absolutely to its citizens without the support and cooperation of its citizens.” While commending the support and encouragement from President Muhammadu Buhari to the Nigerian armed forces, the Air Force chief urged the states to do the same in the fight against terrorism and insurgency. During his visit to the palace of Shehu of Borno, the traditional ruler, Alhaji Abubakar Garbai Ibn Umar El Kanemi called on the government to work assiduously towards ensuring the return of Internally Displaced People to the places of their abode. Alhaji El-Kanemi said that most of the IDPs in the state are prepared to go back to their homes to enable them prepare for the farming season. |
