So what happens to the engine oil you used, rubber on the tyre you used, brake oil used, atf you used and the increase on the odometer reading you added?
Buying extra fuel for the person, simply shows appreciation. Next time you need the car, they would be willing!!!!

Then do not borrow the car to pose as car owner better still take public transport. Re-filling her/his car is a way of showing appreciation. And I am not saying refill every time but every 5 times you borrow refill twice. At least the owner would know that the other 3 times was because you are short on cash and would always be willing to lend her/his car again to you.
