On the 6th of March 2016, President John Mahama of Ghana declared that members of African Union countries would require a visa to visit the country from the month of July. As expected, this declaration has generated a lot of public outcry. What are the benefits of Ghana’s new visa policy and why should we adopt it?

I may be wrong but most of those who oppose this policy do so because they're ignorant. Newsstand comments I gathered made me deduce that they were comments from mostly bruised egos. You hear comments like ‘So Ghana wants to start demanding visas from Nigerians ehn?” Are we no more a part of ECOWAS?’ Well we are! Therefore, there is no cause for alarm. What President Mahama has done is to make it easier for AU member countries to travel to Ghana and experience what the country has to offer. Hopefully, this move would aid trade, investment and tourism.

I do hope Ghana's security has been beefed up. Especially with the upsurge of terrorist activities globally and elections being just around the corner. But then Visa-on-arrival enables the State evaluate your intention before entering into the country. It also helps know how best to track foreigners in the land. With security measures tidied up, I foresee Ghana's economy moving up.

I applaud Ghana’s visa-on arrival stand and also hope that Nigeria and other countries would follow suit. The AU commission chairperson, Nkosazana Dlamini- Zuma, has also supported and commended this move hoping that “many other African countries will follow suit, in the interest of achieving an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa.”

This story has been twisted. This visa on arrival policy does not apply to ECOWAS member states, it's for other AU member states.
